can anyone link me to the GE ROM they're using? Gonna do it to mine today.

As I understand, I can flash any of the ROMs onto my AT&T one, even with its diff't hardware, correct?

Please be sure to take the time to learn how to recover from a soft brick. It is certain that at some time while flashing roms that you will soft brick your phone. The XDA forums are a wealth of information. Take some time to read up on what is going on for your carrier device.

I had to replace my iphone because it went out on me. I went to best buy and they were super packed. I noticed the one in my area had a samsung display that they had just put up. I went to go play with the samsung phones while i waited. And wow! was i ever impressed at the S4. I really really was tempted in telling the guy at best buy to give me a S4 instead. That screen is so big (compared to my iphone) and beautiful. I didnt see any lag on the display unit. Everything including the keyboard was very fluid. I was very impressed by that phone.

In the end though i went with another iphone 5. A white one this time. Because i think it goes better with the new ui themed ios7. Plus i am familiar and have a bunch of apple related stuff on itunes. But you have no idea how tempted i was to try that s4.

yeah, it was significantly easier than I thought it would be. Very similar to my old Sammy devices, except you have to also flash the loki exploit.

Overall, the GE edition rom is awesome. Super slick.

Just curious how S4 owners feel the external speaker compares to that of other phones out right now like the iPhone 5 or other comprable phones. This is one of the big things that holds me back on the S4.

Speakers on phones all suck (with the HTC one having the cleanest, albeit not the loudest sound).

If you lay the S4 on a table, lay it face it down and it sounds fine.

The Iphone will sound fine regardless due to speaker placement.

The S4 is louder.

I got a great deal on a Beats Pill. Since I carry a travel bag with me for work, I use the Pill to sit on a desk at work/hotel. A portable speaker with a built in mic is your friend and can be had on the cheap (i.e UE).

I'm just thinking in terms of everyday video watching (like YouTube videos) or video game playing. I have a Bluetooth speaker that use at home for streaming music. I know it's not going to be crystal clear but just clear enough to hear things without distortion.

My wireless charging back cover arrived today for my GS4. It actually makes the phone feel very natural when holding it. Not too bulky at all, almost like this is how the GS4 should have been. I always felt it was almost too thin, like I was going to break the thing. The back cover does add a little bit of thickness, but not too much. The phone overall is maybe a hair thicker than the iPhone 4S, and I think that is just from the chrome edge along the outside of the GS4. The new back loses the AT&T branding and the 'Galaxy S4' logo, replaced with the Samsung logo.

And another big plus for me, is that the added thickness provides much needed protection for the rear-facing camera. The only reason I was running a case before was to protect the camera when setting the phone down. I hate using cases, so this setup is perfect for me. And! It works great with the Nexus Orb charger I already have. Bonus.

The S4 probably wouldn't win best in class for sound clarity but there's definitely no distortion there and it's plenty loud & clear. Actually it's quite enjoyable when streaming any sort of video content. Sound quality is probably the last thing to worry about, most people are more concerned about the chassis and build quality.

If you like to lay the phone flat on its back, the S4 is terrible. If you're holding the phone, it is fine (or a case with a kickstand) since the natural grip is a couple hand which bounces the sound forward.

I just ordered the Atom case from Element Case and should have it by Monday. Their sound boost system has been reviewed to perform as expected.

From a movie/video watching perspective, the S4 has no equal in the smartphone world due to the high contrast of the AMOLED screen (aside from the note II due to size), immediate pixel response time reducing latency/retinal smearing.

I just sold my s3 and got a s4. All I can say is wow. I ditched my 4s 7 months ago due to the tiny screen but I always thought I would go back to iPhone sooner or later... After getting the s4 I believe there is no need to change phone never again!

Great speed, great camera, plenty of storage (90gb) superb big lovely screen and at last SOFTWARE UPDATES. I can choose pure google or tw or whatever I want and of course there will be continuous support by google for at least 2-3 years even if Samsung decides to forget s4 like they did with s3!

Is there a way to change the lockscreen sounds when you swipe to unlock and when you put the screen to sleep? I would like to change those to custom sounds.

Bad news for you. Since the kernel is written by Samsung, not Google, any software updates still need to go through Samsung so that they can update the kernel/drivers etc., so no you will not be guaranteed updates for that long and you will have to still wait after an update is released before it is made available for the GS4 and HTC One by their respective manufacturer.

Google has stated that they will release updates for Google Edition devices as if they were pure Nexus. That essentially means any Galaxy S4 and One device running the same specs as their Google Edition siblings will be able to up-to-date as well. That is, if you're not scared to do some flashing and use AOSP.

Samsung and HTC still need to first update the kernel to work with the newest updates. It'll still be faster because it won't need to go through carrier before reaching end users, but it still goes from Google>OEM>End user

This is false.

Yes it's possible, at least if you are rooted.
Just replace lock.ogg for example.

Indeed, it does have to go through HTC and Samsung as they provide the kernel and add bits of proprietary code. However, as there has not been a major Android update yet, it remains to be seen how fast Google Edition phones will see them. What is stopping Google from handing over the AOSP code to the manufacturers BEFORE the planned rollout date and having it completed early? In fact, that's probably how they will keep updates in sync with Nexus devices. Why else would we have a fully working leaked build of Android 4.3 for the GS4?

Nothing is for sure yet...we'll see how Google handles it with the upcoming 4.3 update.

I have a strange problem with my s4. The auto mode doesn't select the 3G/HSPA and instead selects EGDE/GPRS(both networks have good reception). To get 3G/HSPA I have to switch to WCDMA only mode first and then revert back to GSM/WCDMA auto mode. That's the only way to get to 3G/HSDPA signal.

Any ideas?

Finally bought a s4. Took me 2 minutes to download the google edition rom from a direct link over LTE (would take a good 20 mins on my 3G setting, take that LTE bashers), took 2 minutes to perform a one-click root and twrp recovery install, and another 2 minutes to flash the ge rom already on drive and reboot.

All in all, less than 10 minutes of work, with just a little bit of pc plugging in, and my stock tw gs4 turned into a google play edition gs4 :)

Loving it. Battery life is already great. I am using everything as clean android intended to be and at the same time enjoying lte, over 6 hrs screen on time, my media collection, and that camera which still takes nice pictures.

All in all, no longer care for another phone for a long time :)

That's the beauty of Android, it's so customizable that once setup to an individual's liking, you can enjoy it for as long as you like. Then if you get bored it's easy to try something fresh.
