Exactly :) It looks like a very low power way of keeping an eye on your phone. My iPhone sits on my desk and the entire screen lights up when I get a message. With the S4, only a tiny window would come on through the flip cover. Much more power efficient - I guarantee battery life will be incredible with that accessory.

Thank you. That's what I meant. The window helps view notifications without the whole screen turning on.

If Samsung aren't completely stupid then only the part of the screen not covered by the S-View cover will light up. Pretty sure that's how it works. Why would they turn on the whole screen when you can only see that tiny bit?

Did you missed the part where I was responding to a guy who said a clear cover would use more power than a fabric cover?

Are you saying a black pixel will less power just because it's covered with fabric or a piece of paper? I'm pretty sure a black pixel will use the same amount of power whether or not the pixel is covered with fabric, covered with clear plastic, covered with paper, or not covered at all.

My orginal question was why not just make the whole cover clear? Not some gimmicky window that I've seen on iPhone cases for over 3 or 4 years.

What point are you trying to prove?

The case on the G4 will show you notifications. Not as per your images a selection of apps.

And AMOLED screens don't consume power while displaying black. In this case, the background of the cut-out is black. What a coincidence!

But having a clear cover will magically force black pixels to consume power?

Did you missed the part where I was responding to some guy saying a clear cover would use more power?

Black pixels don't use ANY power in AMOLED displays, and the reason the cover isn't clear is just a design choice. What happens is that when you use an S-View cover, the entire screen is black (using no power) other than the text in that little window.

If the exact same stuff was on the display with no cover on it would use the same amount of power. The point of the case is that it causes the device to do this automatically.

I don't see why you think the window is gimmicky, that's just the case design.

That it's gimmicky?

Why not just make the whole cover clear plastic?

Unless Samsung thinks its phone is ugly and needs to be covered up most of the time.

I personally think my iPhone 4S is beautiful looking and would never cover up the screen. But if I want a front cover for protection, I would probably want it to be clear plastic.

If they made the entire case clear, all you'd see is an entirely black screen with a little bit of text on it. Some people would probably prefer to look at the cover.

Maybe it's because I have a nice looking iPhone 4S and wouldn't think about covering up the screen.

I haven't seen a single iPhone users in person with a iphone case that has a window cut out. I'm betting most iPhone users will think it's gimmicky and tacky looking.

I dont think anything I say will make any difference to your opinion.

You think its tacky, I think its a great addition to the S4.

Really? The Notifically screen is going to save lots of power?

It's on for about 10 seconds when you get a call or notication. Power saving would be a minor benefit. The main benefit would be saving you the hassle of flipping the cover open and then closing it.

Course it is. Instead of the entire screen lighting up in whatever colour wallpaper you have, probably white, a tiny portion of the screen will come on with white text.

The more notifications you get, the more power it saves. I ask you this: why would you NOT want to save power, however minor?

But yeah not having to open the cover is another benefit :)

I believe it's a gimmick to sell cases in different colors.

Even if it is, maybe there will be one person, in this whole wide world, who might find the feature useful (I'm thinking possibly a business man or woman in a meeting who wants to glance at his or her notifications without opening the flip cover and being obvious...). And that one person in the whole wide world would be glad Samsung implemented this so called gimmick.

Just maybe.

Why can't you accomplish the same thing with a black background for the lock screen? Or better yet, turn off the gimmicky animated background on Android and use a dark background if you are really concern with battery life.

The more notifications you get, the more power it saves. I ask you this: why would you NOT want to save power, however minor?

That's why I have an iPhone?

Not a power sucking Android phone with a ton of useless gimmicky features running in the background? Or a power sucking 1080p 5" screen on a phone? Or power sucking quad/octo core processor just so the Android OS doesn't lag?

You've just proved there is absolutely no point having any kind of discussion with you for the following reasons:

1) You don't understand the full facts regarding power consumption of the new S4.
2) Your so closed minded that you would argue just for the sake of arguing.

Anyone who doesn't agree with your opinions must be closed minded? I'm pretty sure you are the one closed minded here.

In my opinion is gimmicky. You don't think it's gimmicky. Fine. Doesn't make me closed minded.

I've own over half a dozen android devices. Battery life on those android devices sucks, except for the note 2. But the Note 2 is huge with a huge battery.
