This is a pathetic excuse when Sammy also put an IR blaster on the top, but put the power button on the side, where it belongs.

YOU think it belongs there, I think it belongs on the top.....

I've accidentally locked my N4 too many times because that stupid button is on the side....

Plus, good for HTC in merging two functions in one place.

All you big-screen loving Android users should have no problem reaching the top of a smartphone with a modest 4.7" display ;)

Yet taller than the S4's 5" screen. Not by much.

0.8 mm.....

Personally, not really into the "edge-to-edge" displays....I find myself accidentally tapping the screen of my N4 with my palm when I reach to the far side of the screen.....and it still has a thicker bezel than the GS4.

The bezel serves its purpose.....preference of course.

Just pointing out it isn't any easier to reach the top power button just cause the screen is smaller than the S4 or same size as the Nexus 4 when the device is taller than both.

put the power button on the side, where it belongs.

Have to agree with this. As devices get larger and larger, it just makes logical sense to put it where your fingers can reach it.

I don't know how people can continue to accidentally hit it just cause it's on the side. How hard are people gripping their phones? It takes some amount of pressure to depress the button, small as that pressure may be, but it does take some. I don't get why this is a problem.

I mean, are people really having problems of hitting the volume rockers a lot by accident? I don't ever hear any issue with that.

Point 1 (using gloves with touchscreen) is going to be great for me.

When I ride my bike, I usually have my phone mounted flat on the gas tank. At red lights that are long enough, I would have to take a glove off to maneuver anything. I've tried several gloves that cater to this, but they lack safety and protection from the elements.

I really like that idea too! I've used my NOSE before to answer phone calls when I can't get my gloves off quick enough at work! Lol....

As devices get larger? Or screens? Did the GS4 not get both larger and smaller at the same time?

I wouldn't argue with moving the button on something like the Note 2 or a phablet. Clearly the device is a two handed device. However, even something as "large" as the GS4 or One (only ~3mm taller than the N4) -granted the high-end of what I would be able to reach (with short fingers and a relatively large palm) - is still accessible for me.

And yes - I hit the volume rocker on occasion a well. For me, its where my thumb usually lies when holding the phone - my thumb will hit the lock button.

I'm not saying there is a right or wrong way necessarily. Just pointing out that the opinions of you two aren't the be-all end-all of what is "right" and "wrong" when it comes to smartphone builds.

HTC offers the button on top, Sammy offers it on the side - use that as part of your decision making and rank it. If it's outranked by other criteria you like better in the One, you keep the One. If not, you keep the GS4.

This is how rational people make decision - I know you want the perfect smartphone though ;)

A vote for the side from me. Much more convenient than the top and i dont have problems hitting it.

When do the big sites put their official reviews out ? I am curious to read The Verge review, and other non Android only sites review the S4.

Honestly, it's quite a difference.

I definitely had to shuffle with the One X during one handed use for that power button. And the One X is roughly the same size as the Nexus 4 (One X slightly taller).

Expect some serious shuffling action to reach the power button of the One during one handed us, too.

(God, I kind of hate HTC's naming scheme of the One X and the One. It really makes you shake your head especially when you ask yourself why they can't establish brand recognition. Sure there's lack of marketing, but their naming convention doesn't help at all).

I think this is a fair picture of what would be pretty standard and normal hand position on the One:

Just try to imagine the index finger behind the device in this picture. Then try to imagine it reaching up to the power button. How can anyone not expect to have to shuffle the device down, then up again to go back to normal hand position use?

Here's another. Again, imagine where the index finger is. Remember, it's not longer than the middle finger. It would probably be right around the area of the "17" of the clock widget.

I have a note 2 and I prefer the power button on top, I too am hitting it on accident enough to get annoying.

Are you trying to convince me I'm wrong for preferring it on the top? You don't have to agree.....

For what it's worth, I'm shuffling to use the fullscreen of any phone larger than the iPhone anyhow. I press the top button once (which is easier than the side, IMO) and move my hand into operating position.

I really couldn't care less if you felt the same way or not....simply use it as a negative for the One and move on.....

Honestly, I think you're the only here who doesn't KNOW you'll be going with the GS4....

I like it better on top as well. Even better, with a physical home button, you can just press that to turn on the device which is better than anything IMO.

Much prefer the physical home button - especially when my iPhone is laying on a desk.....much easier to press it to see notifications.

Speaking of notifications, android really needs a feature to automatically turn the display on when getting a notification. Nothing is worse that having to reach for the side button at night when I hear the notification. I wish I could just glance over and decide to respond or not.

Seriously......

The light is great and all....but all it tells me is "You have a text". It'd be nice to be able to see the snippets you get from the iPhone as the screen lights up.

My iPhone lights up 16151 times every single day in my pocket. And that eats up battery.

However they could add an option to switch on/off.

Uhhh.....they do. You can turn off the notifications so they don't show on the lock screen. Only show those you really want to see (for me that would be emails and text messages)

And I've never had it eat up my battery....

Some of the add-on sms apps do this - I think Go SMS does.

It's your choice and your life. Relax. Do you know how message boards and open forums work?

Oh I'm perfectly relaxed - just wondered why all those pictures were posted, as up until matto took the "top" side, I was the only one advocating for it.

I was asking a simple question - that's all. Just trying to wade through what's too big for comfortable one-handed operation, what's too small to see and all that. Very confusing to me.

I think it adds to the mystery of not knowing who's contacted you. But seriously I agree it would be useful. However, one advantage of not having this preview is that nosy family members can't glance at your phone when you get a message when it's on the table or something
