Some of the add-on sms apps do this - I think Go SMS does.
So does Handcent. Whatsapp does it too. I think many apps have that functionality.

Yeah, but I really like the stock app =/
Then turning on the screen for notification isn't all that important. ;)

Michael

----------

Much prefer the physical home button - especially when my iPhone is laying on a desk.....much easier to press it to see notifications.
Well if the Nexus 4 had Quick Glance you wouldn't need to use its power button to see notifications. :)

Michael

----------

I like it better on top as well. Even better, with a physical home button, you can just press that to turn on the device which is better than anything IMO.
I have a Note 2--with a home button--yet still prefer the power button be on the top. Same way I felt when I had my Nexus 4.

I accidentally hit it too often, along with the volume buttons. Thinking of finding a way to disable the volume buttons actually.

Still no official ETA/Pricing for the S4 in USA or what version will even have...i'm sure there's tons of speculation, but this wait to find out all the details is killing me

One thing you can always Rely on Apple for is what countries get what, when they will get it, and the pricing all upon announcement....except for the elusive white iphone 4 :D

AT&T announced on contract pricing and pre-order date. T-Mobile announced release date but no price.

But yeah, I agree, it is frustrating that there isn't more information. Why all the secrecy after the phone has been announced?

Also I'm pretty sure that someone posted a list here that said what countries were getting each version. By version I mean octo core and Qualcomm. The US is getting the Qualcomm version. If you meant what storage capacity I'm not sure about that.

Yeah, I spoke with an ATT rep today and still no off contract pricing available, I'm assuming it'll be $599ish for 16gb, 649 for 32gb?

Are you 100% certain? I'm not worried about "octo-core" for the name but i'd be slightly peeved if it provides substantially better battery life over the Qualcomm.

I think it adds to the mystery of not knowing who's contacted you. But seriously I agree it would be useful. However, one advantage of not having this preview is that nosy family members can't glance at your phone when you get a message when it's on the table or something

So nothing lights up? does it vibrate when it's on silent?

The notification light comes on, but we mean the way IOS actually turns the screen on. If you have vibrate on, it will do that.

when you get a text though it makes a sound but doesn't wake the phone up? does anything wake up the phone?

doesn't that change though with the S view cover? how does that come up on the screen then?

Speaking of notifications, android really needs a feature to automatically turn the display on when getting a notification. Nothing is worse that having to reach for the side button at night when I hear the notification. I wish I could just glance over and decide to respond or not.

My GNex on stock 4.2.2 turns the screen on when I get any notification. Somehow, I would have preferred if it didn't do this. I am now tempted to look at each notification that I get. Very distracting.

maybe this is a 4.2.2 new feature then? wonder if it will do that with the S4?

I have a nexus 4 on 4.2.2 and nothing except a call will wake the screen up. It makes a sound/vibrates and will flash the LED, but the screen stays off for all other notifications

Strange.

Reason I asked if you were on stock or not is that when I was on CM10.1, I never noticed the screen coming on after a notification. I only started noticing it after moving back to stock.
I had a stock Nexus 4 as well and it never turned on the screen for stock notifications. Apps from the play store could do it but it most definitely didn't happen stock. And what would be the point if there was not also popup notifications, which are not standard in stock either? Would be a waste just to turn on the screen and not show anything. Doing so in the hope you will catch some text crawling across the status bar for a couple of seconds doesn't make much sense either.

The notification LED/sound/Vibrate combo is good enough for most notifications. If i am really busy, i can simply wake the screen and look at status bar/lockscreen/pull down shade if needed. I find with the iPhone 99% of the time i miss the awake screen anyways whenever i am far from the phone itself.

http://www.sammobile.com/2013/04/10...-exynos-5-octa-kills-qualcomms-snapdragon-600

Today at SamMobile, we received the latest benchmark tests of the Galaxy S4 GT-I9500 (Exynos 5 Octa variant) with Samsung’s latest test firmware installed and the results are highly impressive. In previous test firmwares Samsung had clocked the Exynos 5 Octa CPU to 1.8GHz but in the most recent test firmware it has been decreased to 1.6GHz, as Samsung officially announced.

There are, currently, 3 variants of the Galaxy S4:
GT-I9500 – Exynos 5 Octa 1.6 GHz without LTE
GT-I9505 – Snapdragon 600 1.9 GHz with LTE
SHV-E300S – Exynos 5 Octa 1.8 GHz with LTE

Samsung has given a slight performance boost to the Korean variant of the Galaxy S4 by increasing the Exynos 5 Octa’s clock speed to 1.8GHz. Do keep in mind these benchmarks are not from the Korean variant (SHV-E300S) but from the international variant (GT-I9500) which is clocked at 1.6GHz and it still blows Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 600 SoC out of the water!

Our insider’s Galaxy S4 (GT-I9500) scored a whooping 28018 points on Antutu. The Snapdragon equipped Galaxy S4 (GT-I9505) scored 23607 points, as benchmarked by the folks at GSMArena. We expect the Korean variant (SHV-E300S) to score 30000+ points and one thing is for sure, the Korean Galaxy S4 SHV-E300S will be the fastest device on the planet.

Now don’t be sad if your country is not getting the Exynos 5 Octa variant of the Galaxy S4 as you will not notice a performance difference in day to day tasks between the Snapdragon 600 equipped Galaxy S4 and Exynos 5 Octa equipped Galaxy S4. However, the Exynos variant will be faster while using high CPU extensive apps and will also be more power efficient thanks to ARM’s big.LITTLE technology.

as expected, the Octa is a beast.

once again the usa market gets shafted,we always get the phones late and they always give us the worst soc.The international gs3 had the quad core exynos and we got the dual core snapdragon and now some will get the exynos 5 and some will get shafted with the snapdragon again.

Ill bet its because Samsung has max capacity filled by apple making the 5s cpus and cant make enough of there own exynos to meet demand and ended up using snapdragon in high demand places

I would rather get "shafted" with a non-exynos CPU and enjoy better aosp rom compatibility than be shafted with exynos' proprietary drivers.

for the people that want asop there has always been nexus and there will be asop roms for the exynos trust me its going to blow the doors off of everything once people overclock it and start making kernals for it,the 1.6ghz one is smoking the 1.9ghz s4 in geekbench and Im sure people will get 2.2 ghz out of the exyons 5 once they start overclocking it.

The hardware alone will warrant a huge dev response as this is a true next gen arch from arm and not even the snapdragon 800 that is not due out till holiday season can compete.
Just imagine the performance this soc will have when someone makes a kernel that uses all the cores full speed all the time.

I don't know if this is true, but this was posted in another thread as to why Samsung uses Qualcomm in certain markets:
Not really. One of the primary reasons that Samsung uses the Qualcomm SoC is better radios for the targeted markets just as much as the ARM+GPU capabilities. Until Samsung comes up with better multiband, worldwide LTE coverage the Qualcomm solution has bigger upsides. They may catch up over time, but for right now Qualcomm has a substantial lead on a relatively broad front.

Sure they could use discrete Qualcomm modems like Apple does but Samsung's offerings don't have Apple's pricing margins. Both in the volume that Apple commits to ( because not in the radio business) and value add on overall product.

Michael

that gets thrown out the windows because Samsung uses an exynos 4 with a separate lte modem in the usa market note 2 and did not use the snapdragon in it and they are also using the exynos 5 in areas with the separate lte modem so it can be done, the only thing that would make any sense is that they just cant make enough exynos chips to fill first batch demands.Think about it,samsung has a fab that can build exynos chips and they are BUYING chips from snapdragon when they could easily make there own chips and use them.

They are prolly full force production making apples next soc and just could not get enough exynos chips built in time to do a world launch

and the fact that there own home land gets the best of both lte and exynos and even clocks the darn thing faster is a slap in the face to everyone else.

kudos to Samsung as they have no pulled an apple, they didn't even talk about the hardware of the cell at the launch event and people will line right up to buy the phone without even knowing what the guts are inside and could care less that there is a faster better gs4 out and about.

its like Samsung is putting out the gs4 and gs4s at the same time because one cell is like 30-40% faster then the other
