But isn't the Snapdragon 600 also a beast???

clock for clock arm 15 is about 40% faster and snapdragon is also using ddr2 while the exynos is on ddr3 so we can expect a huge boost in gpu performance with the added bandwith over the 600

I have this weird feeling that apple is going to use the exynos 5 in the iphone 5s and that is why Samsung is not using a bunch of them

Samsung for the first time is using a power vr gpu and that is what apple loves using so who knows whats going to happen but if the 5s is just a clock speed bump it will be left behind with the exynos gs4

I have just sold my ip5 and pre-ordered a SGS4 with O2 and I have just now discovered about these two different models.
I'm pissed off that they've done this and it is definately screwing launch day buyers.

I have to say when people talk about fragmentation in Android it is usually parroting something they heard and not really accurate.

But this crap of having different CPUs in the same freaking model really sucks. Then you have versions specific to carriers and you get fragmentation in a single model, let alone the platform. Not liking that part of Android.

Dual core processor, qHD display, 8mp camera, they just ruined the s4.

If Samsung were smart they would have made the s4 with the Dame specs and released alongside the regular phone.

Still can't get a top tier phone in a small size

Nah. Same specs with a smaller display and less PPI means it will benchmark higher then their big version flagship model. Can't have that. :)

don't forget to add the fact that one model is 20% faster (exynos 5 1.6ghz)and then we have the same exynos 5 with lte that is 20% faster but has lte and now we have an exyons 5 with lte and is also clocked faster at 1.8ghz

so we got

snapdragon lte 1.9ghz
exynos 5 3g 1.6ghz
exynos 5 lte 1.6hhz
exynos 5 lte 1.8ghz

the Korean version will be the super flagship of all the gs4s and will sell for crazy on ebay

Speaking of notifications, android really needs a feature to automatically turn the display on when getting a notification. Nothing is worse that having to reach for the side button at night when I hear the notification. I wish I could just glance over and decide to respond or not.

I don't know which device you have, but my Note 2 already does this as I'm sure the S3 and S4 do.

When I get certain notifications the screen turns on while it is "read" at the top of the screen, and then it turns off again. It doesn't happen for every single notification type, though.

Kind of pissed about the processor thing, mainly because I liked the idea of getting a flagship device.

As long as the Snapdragon is powerful enough to keep things running smoothly and without lag, then I can kind of live with it.

Just over two weeks to go! I hate waiting this long for a product launch...

What do you mean by read and which notifications?

I have a Note 2 and, aside from apps from the play store that I configure to turn the screen on, it will only turn on the screen for alarms, calendar reminders, phone calls. Specifically, it does not do it for text messages, facebook.

To me it's more of not being standard on the lock screen. Now that I think about it, I am on the fence about that, from a privacy perspective. (Though I think there are apps or mods that will do that on Android.)

You know when you get a text message and it displays the text along the very top of the screen? It shows the first line of text, then the second line, and "reads" it in this fashion? When I get a new text message the screen turns on, it shows it at the top of the screen on my lock screen, and the little circle with a mail envelope and a 1 shows up in the right side of the screen.

You are absolutely right about the stock texting app. I barely used it as I was already using Handcent when I got my Note 2. But I just enabled its notifications and sure enough a new text will turn on the screen, letting me see the message preview text in the status bar. Screen doesn't stay on for long, but it certainly does come on.

Of course this caused me to go and see if I could make Handcent do the same thing. Sure enough I can--but with a gazillion other options. Those options include how long to keep the screen on (when Handcent turns it on), and to show the message on the lock screen without needing to unlock. I would say the number of ways to configure Handcent is infinite. My head hurts lol.

Handcent gives me a popup window so i can see the text. The screen stays on til it times out but the popup doesnt go away til i tell it to. If you have been using Handcent, you probably already know that.

Yes I know that part--and I use and like that feature (reminds me of BiteSMS on jailbroken iPhone but better). What I didn't know was that Handcent can, without using a popup, simply turn on the screen. I'm not sure of the benefit of that, other than being able to see the message--or part of it--in the status bar for the brief duration it is there. I also didn't realize the stock Samsung texting app does that too; but it only leaves the screen on while the message text is in the status bar (i.e., screen is only on briefly and its time cannot be changed). Not sure the stock messaging app can have that feature disabled (perhaps it won't do that if you don't have message text shown in the status bar).

Correct. I dont use the stock message app and i just turn off the notifications from it and i dont get those or anything else.

Yea I did that too, plus made Handcent the default SMS/MMS app. The stock app seems to still function if you don't do that, which I would assume is not helping battery. When I made handcent the default app I no longer saw badges on the stock app's icon.

The nexus 4 does not turn the screen on for text notifications, that is what I was referring too. I just tested it and am using stock

Tried sending a text (honestly I don't receive much texts due to the advent of WhatsApp) to my phone, the screen lit up along with the notification tone.

Lol of course they won't.....for a VARIETY of reasons, the top two being:

(1) Apple doesn't buy off the shelf SoCs.....they'll design the A7 themselves, likely based off ARM 15 architecture.

(2) Apple doesn't need an octa core processor with the big.little power saving. My guess is the A7 will be a quad core processor - but rumors are it will be on the 20nm TSMC process and not out until 2014.

for the people that want asop there has always been nexus and there will be asop roms for the exynos trust me its going to blow the doors off of everything once people overclock it and start making kernals for it,the 1.6ghz one is smoking the 1.9ghz s4 in geekbench and Im sure people will get 2.2 ghz out of the exyons 5 once they start overclocking it.

The hardware alone will warrant a huge dev response as this is a true next gen arch from arm and not even the snapdragon 800 that is not due out till holiday season can compete.
Just imagine the performance this soc will have when someone makes a kernel that uses all the cores full speed all the time.

Nah, saying "there is always nexus" sounds so bad. I am not going to compromise on hardware if i can run AOSP on better hardware and if google can make a better nexus for masses, not just geeks, but chooses not to.

Team hacksung and CM have expressed their displeasure with exynos already. Many bugs exist on exynos devices because of driver incompatibility.

Qualcomm is different as the sources are generally out and a better ROM can be made. Especially when it comes to camera.

However, this time i am planning to load a debloated and improved touchwiz custom ROM instead of pure AOSP, and load nova or apex launchers. That way i can keep touchwiz functions, have the look of AOSP for the most part, and have better performance.

well since Samsung already did all the hardwork I would not be surprised if the iphone 6 is using the exynos 5 big little soc, Samsung and arm have worked hard to get that soc working and with the little a7 cores the exynos 5 gets 50% battery boost over this gens socs

If apple went 4 core arm 15 is would be a huge power hog without having little cores to do simple tasks, its like exynos 5 losing the a7 cores and just using 4 a15 cores.samsung now is a gen ahead of everyone else and has plans to clock the big little to 2.5 ghz with there next node shrink

Good for them - Apple has already implemented huge power savings and efficiency gains in their own designs.....why would they move to designing their own chips, only to move back again?

If they went to the standard, off-the-shelf option perhaps. Apple won't. Have you not paid any attention to Apple in the last few years? They custom design the chips BASED off the architecture for maximum performance and efficiency.....a BIG reason why the 1440 mAh battery of the iPhone 5 outlasts nearly every other MUCH bigger battery on the market.

The A7 will be no different - custom Apple design, with an emphasis on efficiency and plenty of performance to keep the iPhone and iOS smooth as silk.

I know most of this won't get through that spec-loving mind of yours though....so have fun with your Exynos 5! Just know there isn't a snowball's chance in hell Apple implements ANY off-the-shelf or other OEM designed chipset.
