Interesting read. I'm surprised to see the 820 gpu surpass the A9 GPU by such a margin. Apple usually always maintains a lead there.

Also, anyone try out Firefox recently? Really nice mobile browser. It's fast, adblcockt, extensions, themes, etc.
I saw that on another site. The 820 is a great chipset. I used to use Firefox as my default browser. But Chrome just integrates so well across the platforms I use that I just can't switch back.

Look I have a very diverse setup, and am eagerly awaiting my S7, but you too are being a fanboy.

Things that apple excels at over android, PC etc.

1.Continuity.

Being able to receive phone calls, and texts seamlessly on a Mac will be greatly missed once I switch over. I am sure there is some hack way to get it to kinda work on other setups, but it is seamless on Mac.

2.Solid device restore options.

This will be my first android since the note 3, but in the past I have had to spend considerable time setting up any replacement devices. iCloud is a very reliable backup method. The same goes for their time machine implementation. This has saved my ass so many times.

3.service

This is getting better, but having the ability to go to Apple Store is a feature Samsung, and Microsoft have yet to match.

4.stability

The silver lining of a walled garden is that the trains always run on time in iOS. Despite world class hardware I anticipate doing a few factory fresh installs on my S7 over my time with it. Not a big deal for me, but you would be disingenuous if you said android were nearly as stable.

5.apps

This too is a narrower margin of victory, but it still stands that the apple App Store has a better quality, and more updated selection of apps. Developers are better these days, but they know that the profit margins are higher on iOS. It is still not uncommon to hear of a new app appearing on iOS, with a android release date scheduled for the future.

I'm with you though. 5 years ago I was 100% apple. I owned one of almost every single product that they produced. I have been on Apple computers since pre iOS 9 days.

After getting rid of my iPhone I w I'll be down to only the products that they dominate in still IMO. Retina MacBook Pro, iPad Air 2, and 27 inch retina Imac.

I have moved from Apple TV to nvidia shield, and I am actually considering replacing the Imac at some point with a 32 inch 4K monitor connected to a beast gaming rig.

I am a tinkerer though. The virtues I listed are more then enough to keep many people happily in the apple Eco system.

To each their own though. Live and let live. There is no wrong or right. Just use the products that suit you best.
That's a nice list WRT android vs ios but imo it falls apart with osx vs windows.

Programs are generally better supported and brought first to pc.

Most of the advantages of osx are tied to also using ios.

Find it interesting you call imac best in class when it has all the disadvantages of a laptop in a desktop form factor.

Apple laptops are best in class but imo it is the hardware and build quality and not necessarily because of osx. Laptops like the xps 13 are catching up though imo. Recently bought a work laptop and debated heavily between boot camped mpb and xps 13 1080p non touch and actually went with the xps because I'm scared of these boot camp issues I've been reading about. Granted I need windows for work and don't want to run it in a vm

I don't buy the osx is more stable than Windows talk either. If it is, it doesn't matter much in practice. I don't see anyone running osx server anymore either.

I suppose apple service is still better and more prevalent but the Microsoft store isn't that bad.

Cheers :)

Don't forget about the surface book. Following the recent bug squashing firmware update, I switched from a current model rmbp 13in to the surface book.

Killer piece of hardware and windows 10 is rather great.

Same here. Plus I love the swipe to switch tabs. And the pull down to refresh.

Makes one handed browsing easier, smoother.

So interested in your thoughts about that's switch. I have a 2015 13 rmbp and have contemplated the same move

The Dell XPS with that infinity screen is a beautiful laptop!

My S7 Edge is supposed to be delivered today! The bummer is that it still shows as "Order Processed: Ready for UPS" so, I'm wondering if it will be delivered today even though it says scheduled for Mar 7th.

Does it show the same status for others expecting it today?

It is largely going to depend on what you value in your Mac, I guess. I tested the water first, and after about a week with the surface book, I knew I couldn't go back.

I'll try and avoid typing a book here, as I have the tendency to do so.

The battery life on the surfacebook is better, period. Tech sites say as much, and I would agree. If you battery life seems poor, check the task manager. I have only had one time, in the past few months, where my surfacebook battery rapidly drained. Come to find out, via task manager, my wife had installed a EBATES extension in chrome. For some reason, that extension was consuming 30% of the cpu while idling. Deleted that, and I have had no problems since. I use my surfacebook all day, everyday at work. The display is constantly on, and I am usually doing some kind of office work, design work, and imagine analysis. After an eight hour day, I usually have 50-60% left in the battery, depending on the type of work. I have never ran out of battery, during a day at work, which is what matters. I don't even bring the charger with me.

The display rivals the retina display. Also, while the display is a similar size in inches, the aspect ratio is different. It doesn't appear to be any more narrow in use, but it is taller. I actually really like it, as the workspace it provides is closer to a 14 inch monitor. I do a lot of imagine analysis and editing, so this display is great for my uses.

The keyboard is and trackpad are every bit as good as the macbooks. The trackpad is a big deal to me, and the main reason I kept coming back to OSX. I don't notice the difference on the surfacebook, and the touchscreen and included pen adds a level of precision you can't get otherwise. If you do any kind of image editing, or creative work; you will appreciate this. Most of adobe creative suite is optimized for this, as is Microsoft's office suite.

The hardware and design, IMO, is rather ingenious. The only negative I have heard is the display can be a bit top heavy, but in my use I have not noticed this. The processor, a small battery, the harddrive, etc is all house in the display (which is really thin, considering). The keyboard houses a large battery and the discrete GPU. The display can detact and serve as a large surface pro tablet, or the display can be reattached rear-facing to enable a lap friendly, or tent-mode approach. The notepad (I believe that is what Microsoft calls the display when detached) gets about 2-4 hours of battery life in heavy use, and 8 if your just ready. But when the notepad is attached to the keyboard dock, no matter the orientation, you get the 10-14 hours of battery life advertised.

Security: Windows 10 is the most secure version yet. Its like android vs ios in this instance. Don't be stupid, and let windows defender police itself, and you'll be fine. OSX, like iOS, is being targetted more and more, while Windows is becoming more and more secure. Its not really a concern anymore.

The software, for me, is great. Windows ten is pretty polished, and I have ran into zero problems. Its different than OSX, but in a good way. It has some OSX like features, such as multiple desktops and the ability to display all your apps at once (whatever it is called, and windows 10 does it better). The multitasking is better, as is the window snapping ability. OSX split window implantation is poor and clunky. The best way to explain it is to compare it to the Android vs iOS argument, only Windows has a stronger argument vs OSX. Windows allows more freedom, etc, and with that freedom you have to be knowledgeable. What I mean is if you go install a random third party program that is poorly optimized, you might kill the battery life; just like android. Windows also has more high quality programs, more third party support, more games, more everything. Also pushbullet, and other android compatible apps work better on windows.

Future upgrade-ability: The keyboard houses a large battery and the discrete GPU. There are rumors that for future iterations of the surface book's keyboard dock will be backwards compatible. IF so, this would allow one to trade-out their keyboard dock for the next gen version; allowing the user to get the new keyboard/trackpad, with an upgraded discrete GPU, and a fresh battery.

Negatives:
- Its expensive. I bought the i5 model, with a 256gb solid state, and the discrete GPU. I believe this model runs $200-300 more then the equivalent 13 inch RMBP, but the surfacebook as the discrete GPU. The PC, power wise, falls in between the 13 and 15 in rMBP, but maintains the portability of the 13 inch. Personally, once I realize I was going to keep this machine, I returned it to Best Buy, and found one on ebay. I got one that was a month old, for about $300 less, and it came with a two year accidental warranty.

-headphone jack, two usb 3 ports, mini-display port (or whatever its called), sd card slot. So the negative here is if you need more ports. Personally, I miss having an hdmi, but its simple enough to use an adapter, like I used to on an old 15 mbp.

Overall: This is the best piece of hardware I have ever owned, across an ecosystem. Its beautiful, reliable, portable, efficient, and effective. I recommend at least giving it a try, and I wouldn't be suprised if you fall in love with it. The ipad pro/surface pro tablet mode, along with the included pen, essentially made the iPad Air 2 as a productivity device obsolete. So much so, that it became a media and web surfing only device. As such, I traded it in for a Tab S2, mainly for the incredible screen and light weight of the device. The s2 is actually a great tablet, but anyway, I recommend the surface book and hope this helps. I am more then willing to answer any other question at length, if you would like. I can honestly say I won't be tempted by anything else, except the next surface book.

I apologize for any typos, I didn't have time to proof read this.

Thank you so much for your thoughts! This gives me a lot to think about. I have been contemplating a move away from my rmbp. I have had some kind of MBP model for almost a decade now. I tried a Lenovo Yoga model once but it didn't do the trick. But maybe the SurfaceBook will be the answer. Thank you for taking the time to write up your thoughts! Much appreciated :)

No problem.

As far as windows goes, Microsoft and the Dell XPS series are great. I do believe Samsung has released a surfacebook competitor, as well as some really powerful, ultra light ultrabooks recently as well.

I don't know but 50 really seems to be such a pathetically limited number doesn't it. :(
I still think you might be pleasantly surprised tomorrow. Past experience from three is not to believe a word from them.

Fingers crossed eh :)

Best Buy is releasing their preorders today. I was at the store earlier and the mobile manager had one and I asked him to change the display screen mode to basic from adaptive. He then installed Subway Surfers. After he started to run it, the display changed back to adaptive. His jaw dropped.

I cautioned about this earlier and have had experience with several devices over the last week and his was not in demo/retail mode and those did the same thing.

Hardware or software, I would not know but I know one person here ran that test and said his unit was fine and it kept the basic screen mode running the game so I don't know what to make of this. User issue (would not know how as it is a simple change to the menu setting), batch, or carrier related or whatever. His was on AT&T. The colors were even more saturated than I have seen in adaptive mode on other prior Samsung devices. They were downright FUGLY.

When I had the Note 5 on ATT, I noticed this as well! ATT display looks nothing like the TMO variant which was odd to me.

Any chance you can contact Samsung directly? Perhaps they'll send you one regardless?

I'll try that. I'll contact the person who stepped in and helped me get my S6 Edge fixed when I was being messed around. See if there's anything they can do

TMO variant here.

I can't replicate what you are seeing. I even tried opening the same game. If it is a real problem, no telling how wide spread it will be.

The silver lining of a walled garden is that the trains always run on time in iOS. Despite world class hardware I anticipate doing a few factory fresh installs on my S7 over my time with it. Not a big deal for me, but you would be disingenuous if you said android were nearly as stable.

To each their own though. Live and let live. There is no wrong or right. Just use the products that suit you best.

I think you may revise your virtues list once you step a little further out of your Eco :) and you do not have to give up Icloud synch for email, bookmarks, contacts, photos, Cortana already gives some functionality of missed calls and sms, but not as smooth as Apple, Service soon drops off when you travel internationally, Stability is subjective you only have to search on these forums for examples,

Of course we did not list the Android virtues :) but many of them relate to not being in the walled garden

I think one of the problems of Android users is due to the greater flexibility and choices, postings are far more critical compared to when you have limited or none

I guess what really counts is getting the device that suits you best regardless of what others may say and as we have noted before many are blissfully happy by being totally unaware of updates/mods/apps etc

1. Pushbullet > Continuity
2. Device restore: Apple still has the best option, but Samsung Sidesync and Google are not far off.
3. Service is relative. While I may have to wait a little longer dealing with Google, their service has been better than when I have gone into an Apple store and dealt with the morons labeled as "geniuses".
4. Stability? After all the latest iOS update Fiasco's you really want to list this? How about the latest OSX ransomware and malware issues? What about the Apple watch initial OS and all of those issues? What about Apple Maps rollout? Most people won't even update their iPhones right away now because of Apples horrid history of screwing up the update and bricking phones.
5. Apps. I agree to an extent. 3rd party apps are usually brought to iOS first, but not always. But when it comes to 1st party apps, Google rules the roost. Google is constantly updating its apps with what is known as Wednesday update day. With App!e, you may have to wait years to get a core app updated.
