Thanks for the quick review yeah one of my biggest pet peeves is when a smartphone UI isn't smooth and fluid, that's a deal breaker for me.

And that's on a brand new phone imagine 6 months to a year later after it's bogged down with updates and more apps sounds like I might get even slower.

I'm a huge pixel Nexus fan as well but this sounds a bit disappointing. Currently have the Pixel 4 XL, doesn't sound like I'll be switching this year.

It's a shame about the cpu because the pixel 5 kinda feels like all we wanted, a good size, a big enough battery, high refresh screen, good camera, wide angle camera. It's not that it didn't feel fluid, just that maybe those little load times are more noticeable after experiencing the phone flying around everywhere else because of the 90 hz screen

Interesting. Although heft can show a confidence in build quality. I'm actually missing the days of phones being lighter. I mean obviously we cannot go against physics, those 4000+ mAh batteries and large screens will carry some weight, but in a sense I'm glad the returning of plastic, making phones lighter on the pocket (in a literal sense).
You'll love the 4a / 5 then if you're into a lighter device. It is a nice weight actually. Bear in mind I came from a Fold 2 which is a hefty mother *expletive.

So now this is actually quite nice after I said it made it feel cheap. It still wouldn't harm having a few extra pounds, but a case and screen protector would solve that.

Pixel 5 unboxing. I don't really like this guys 'style' tbh. I never take anything away from his reviews at all - all he does is literally talk through the spec sheet and keeps the camera on him for 90% of the video.
But a look at it vs the 4a 5G and the Sage colour.

Agreed I'm not a fan of his whatsoever seems kind of like a shady dude. And the reviews are more infomercial type stuff.

He got the new Xperia sent to him and did an unboxing vid and said he didn't think he was going to bother reviewing it as he was busy with other phones! I mean, appreciate there will be less views than an iPhone or Samsung vid, but a bit shady when Sony have sent him a device to review!

I agree with you though, he does seem shady. He seems to think of himself as a bit of a baller lol.

Yup the hands on vids and unboxings are the absolute worst. I can never understand why a lot of these tech reviewers take the phone out and go "we'll come back to that in a moment" and proceed to show us the leaflets in the box.
Absolutely pointless. Oh look, there's the charger, and the cable. Well I never.

Its because they know people are clamoring for reviews on the Pixel and theyre under the emargo and cant give a review. So they do these pointless hands-on videos so they can still get views without really providing anything.

Microsoft had a weird embargo cycle recently.

They sent reviewers the Surface Duo... but they couldn't show it working until 2 weeks later. They could only show what it looks like. A literal hands-on.

It was even worse with the new XBox. The reviewers only got an empty shell. Basically "here's the case... check back in 2 months..."

:p

You can read a lot into embargos. For example, the Duo embargos were a giant red flag. It was clear they were trying to hide reviews until launch was close and preorders were already being ready to ship.

The xbox is a different story. They have their only competitor on the market releasing a product within the same month. Both are being secretive and not trying to tip their hand too much. The recent hands on reviews for the Xbox were also limited because it's clear they are still finalizing the new UI and fine tuning the enhanced for xbox games which is why reviewers weren't allowed to show either of those.

This Pixel 5 embargo however is strange. I can't think of why they are holding back on this, unless it's their usual embargo timeline and I'm just misremembering.

Is anyone still expecting Black Friday deals on the "New" Pixel phones? I can see a deal for the P4a but at $349 maybe a $50-75 discount. I read the P4a 5G is being released Nov 19th? That's just a few days away from BF so I question if Google will discount those phones after a few days because if they do they will get a crap load of phone calls asking for a price match.

The Pixel 5 may see a discount since it launches in late October.

I don’t think it’s strange, Apple does it too. It helps to create hype for the product... these companies are just trying to take a page from Apple playbook. As much as it seems odd for Microsoft to send the Duo to reviewers in such an unorthodox way. I think it was a method to Microsoft madness... it wanted the new form to be the focus of consumer buying decision. And, there’s a select people would ignore the giant “red” flags... just to experience a new form in a smartphone.

Microsoft just in a tough position given that it’s trying to enter back into a market it once abandon and it’s highly competitive as well. As far as the Pixel 5.... the hype is with the camera, obviously everyone knows Google post processing is arguably best on the market. It serves in their best interest to allow reviews a chance to get accumulated to the ultra-wide camera and produce great results.

You suppose with the new 5g wavebands that pixels will get better radio service? I know the radios in my last pixel devices have been pretty bad (especially the galaxy nexus, anyone remember that thing?). My XL 2 data connection seems to be getting worse :( could be the SIM card but I haven't seen any messages saying anything about it. It's been on google fi

Why did they get rid of the image processing core thing. Sorry I am rushing this post out due to kids yammering at me and can’t remember off top of my head what it was called. I don’t like waiting for my picture to process. It’s the flagship. Sort of.

Actually I'm kinda glad active edge and soli is gone. The photo core thing is kind of a surprise to ax since they feature pixels as basically cameras.

Don't mind me, I'm a bit frustrated due to the radio issues I've had with almost every Google phone :( it really prevents me from going all in. Do I try again or do I learn my lesson (looking at the stack of pixels)

So.. the Pixel 5 may not be on my radar any longer. I'm on Fi, and in order to make full use of Fi you need a "designed for Fi" device. Well, Google announced yesterday that the Samsung flagships and the A71 are now "designed for Fi"! I may grab the S20+..
