14 > 15 is the real upgrade on iPhone this year, obviously 14 > 15 Pro is too but rather get a Pixel 8 Pro personally. 😜
Me too. :p

I agree that the reg 15 is the one this time, Dynamic Island, brighter screen, updated camera, USB C, 2 x crop zoom, matte glass back - all great things IMO.

I think that nay be the best route for me than waiting forever for the 15 PM which will then likely get shelved when the 8 Pro comes out.

Says completely upgraded cameras dunno if that means new sensors or not but the spec sheets says improved apertures

Pixel watch 2 for free cool can sell that to my mate

From the leaks it sounds like Google have been focusing on camera upgrades this year, pun intended!

I'm expecting new sensors, looks like it could happen as Google say they are 'fully upgrading' the cameras. New aperture info is interesting.

Specs mention the 8 Pro has:

Wide
50 MP wide-angle lens (f/1.68 aperture, 82° FoV, 1/1.31-inch sensor, 8x Super Res zoom

Ultrawide
48 MP module (f/1.95, 125° FoV)

Telephoto
48 MP telephoto lens (f/2.8, 21° FoV, 5x optical zoom, and 30x digital zoom)

Compare that to the 7 Pro what we do know:

Wide:
50 MP Octa PD Quad Bayer wide camera, 1.2 μm pixel width, ƒ/1.85 aperture. 82° field of view 1/1.31" image sensor size
12 MP ultrawide camera with autofocus
1.25 μm pixel width. ƒ/2.2 aperture
125.8° field of view

Ultrawide
12 MP ultrawide camera with autofocus
1.25 μm pixel width
ƒ/2.2 aperture
125.8° field of view
Lens correction

Telephoto
48 MP Quad Bayer PD telephoto camera. 0.7 μm pixel width.
ƒ/3.5 aperture. 20.6° field of view
5x optical zoom
Super Res Zoom up to 30x

New video AI stuff looks great, hoping the actual video quality will be on par or at least close to the iPhone 15 Pro Max now.

This is what’s interesting

8 pro has different aperture to 7 pro which makes me think maybe it is an upgraded main sensor. Can’t see them changing the aperture for same sensor but shaping that the 5x has a better aperture than 7 pro 5x

So maybe the better low light performance is due to the better aperture on both main and telephoto

Yeah exactly this, makes no sense in them changing the aperture for them to keep the same sensor. Reckon we can expect a new main sensor with the new apertures. This will help low light performance (vs the 7 Pro) which is then further boosted by AI too. Can't wait for the camera comparisons against the S23 Ultra & 15 Pro Max.

I'm in for an 8 Pro pre-order based on the spec leaks & Pixel Watch 2 throw in.

Makes me think if its a co-ordinated 'unofficial' leak by Google given its only a few days after the iPhone 15 release and less than two weeks for the Google event in NYC.

The camera functions, especially if VIDEO is improved, will be the hook for me. Love my 7a, however if I can have a single grab and go device with my messaging platforms and iPhone or better cameras, I will be set.

Now, the key will be, IF, they upgrade the regular pixel cameras, and processors. I am done (well past) with big phones, and am growing tired of Google, Samsung, and Apple (AGAIN) forcing me to the biggest phone for the best cameras.

I've gone off iPhone so currently only own my old SE 2020. Currently using a Fold4 but think I'll be getting an 8 Pro if we get the free Watch 2 (wife will have my gen 1).

The Pixel range have always represented best of Google & stock / clean Android, immediate updates at great value vs competitors. I've always gone for the Pro version so I don't look at the base versions. I like what Google are doing with AI. Pro camera's are great, I just want Google to match Apple with video quality as I use video a lot. The Pro's are very cheap vs Apple & Samsung equivalents. I loved both the 4XL and 6 Pro, skipped the 7 Pro last year.

Google are slowly etching into pricing territory they are better to stay out of; this year is still decent value on the Pro especially with a pre-order bundle but I'm worried they'll keep going up now.

Samsung do offer mega pre-order discount deals. Last couple of years they've taken a leaf from Google's pre-order book here. I bought a 1TB S23 Ultra in the UK during pre-order with £200 voucher from Samsung & then actually sold it for slightly more after 4 months!

I'm a different buyer, an annual upgrader, sometimes with both Apple & Android, but understand the importance of the extra 2 year OS & security updates for people holding onto their phones for 2 years plus.

iPhones still hold their value remarkably well each year whilst I find Pixel's are even better value down the line.

Interesting to hear about the 20% performance increase with the Tensor G3. If they can improve battery life and address at least some of the heat issues I'm sold this year. Qualcomm will likely stay ahead of the Android field, Apple & Samsung go head to head with chips.

Looking forward to comparing the 15 Pro Max to the 8 Pro, pricing will be part of my comparison too. I enjoyed the 23 Ultra Z & Fold 4 but OneUI isn't really my cup of OS, despite the superb Qualcomm Gen 2 in the Ultra.

Hoping Google could be onto a winner this year with the 8.
Indeed. Pixel 4a was a solid device at a great price and stock/clean Android is great. OnePlus OxygenOS has also not been bad though I'm turned off by Oppo and "less flag in ships" of the OP 10 and 11 :)

I could upgrade more often however, there is just too much of a "US conspicuous consumerism" stench with the mobile manufacturer aggressive upgradeitis marketing tactics.

This is my first encounter with OneUI and it is sort of growing on me to some extent. My return window overlaps with the P8/Pro announcement date so there is still time for me to blow even more cash haha

Guessing 256 GB P8 Pro will be in the range of $1099 which is ~$450 more that what I've got into the S23+ (that has the same Qualcomm Gen 2 as the Ultra). That's a lot of ducketts for a better camera & app plus a few other improvements (still with some drawbacks in terms of performance, charging, modem and that clunky notch on the back (edit: that will be somewhat less trauama triggering than whats out there now on 7's).

I got a super cheap gen 1 this weekend gone and I like the size, my daily watch is a 39mm Tudor BB58 though so I am biased to smaller watches.
And that's the point I'm making. It's great that Google provided a watch size tailored for you, but what about the other people who desires something bigger.

Google makes various sizes when it comes to phones, I would think they would do the same for watches... I don't know if it's due to how strong Apple is in the market which makes them hesitant on doing so. But with the advertising Google do with the Pixel vs iPhone and RCS campaign, I'd rather them put some resources into a bigger watch.

Samsung brought out their biggest watch to date with the Watch Classic sitting at 47mm and then there's the Apple Watch Ultra at 49mm, but Google has given us only one at 41mm.

As a guy with tiny wrists, I welcome the Pixel Watch size.
Selfishly I think it’s great. These Ultra’s of the world can politely sod off with how big they are!

But I do agree, Google need to do a bigger size to compliment the smaller one. The bigger one would likely sell more too.

and that clunky notch on the back).
I'm just gonna say that I honestly think that the Pixels have the best looking camera aesthetic of all the OEM's out there. I really do. It's symmetrical unlike Apple, Samsung, et al. and it lays nice and flush on a surface without bouncing about. I hope they keep it and continue to refine it. It does look a little less elegant on the Fold though as it doesn't span the entire back.

That's it. My stupid inconsequential comment of the day.

Thank you.

I wasn't trying to upgrade my 7 Pro this year but this phone is sounding more robust than I thought it would be. And playing the long-game because I'm a crazy person who thinks about this stuff; this will take me to the 10 and the alleged major chip upgrade rather than skipping this year and being stuck with a marginal Pix 9 Pro G4 upgrade the year before.

I have 2 year cycle at most with my phones. I just can't go any longer than that (I get antsy and FOMO syndrome). I enjoyed the 6 Pro so much I wanted the slightly longer zoom and photo unblur of the 7 Pro that honestly was completely worth the 360 bucks it cost to upgrade. I use those 2 features all the time. Even if was tempted by iPhones right now, and sometimes I am, these Google AI features have juts spoiled me to the point of no return at this point.

Ugh, Pixel 8 line using the old UFS 3.1 not the 60% faster UFS 4.0 like Samsung uses on the S23 series.
So many coin tosses... each has strengths and weaknesses. More developers are jumping (or being pushed off) ship from Apple and going to Samsung, so there is that too hehe. I'd want to be an expert wood chipper engineer to sign on with Google development lol

Fun to ponder (and throw money at) in any case...

Hahaha it's a good large size ...it actually looks larger in pics IMO but I do like large faces

Maybe I need to zoom out some lmao

Hell to the no, still way to massive for me! I would never let anything that large anywhere near my wrists lol. But that's just me. Im glad others enjoy the large size. Give me a Pixel Watch 2 in like 43mm and that's my perfect sweet spot.
