Only paying about $150 for the phone given all the Best Buy gift cards I’ve collected over the years. Plus, I’ll be selling the Watch 2, so I’ll be getting a really good deal!

But, damn, why are y’all so obsessed with me??

awesome and happy you got on board bc I know how much you love the Google experience…I’m looking forward to your thoughts on the newest phone as well as everyone else in here with your new phones

Will be skipping my first Pixel, still very happy with my Pixel Fold, but can't wait to see y'all's thoughts. Looks like a very nice upgrade.

I’m joining you as well… I’m sticking with the foldable… it’s not perfect but at this time I think I’m better off with the experience.. I will see what happens next year … I’m officially closing shop for cell phone buying this year ha ha no comments everyone else

I would love to upgrade to my GF to the 8 pro, however I am still worried about the modem, and battery life.
Honestly it is not a problem in the Pixel 7 Pro. The modem is not bad. I have an s23 ultra and Pixel 7 Pro and reception in most cases is identical. There are some rare occasions when the Pixel doesn't seem to have as good a signal but it never interfered with the function of the phone.

The Pixel 8 should have much better battery life and thermals although Samsung fab chips have a tendency by design to ramp up fast and heat up fast. So I doubt that has changed but the overall chip should be much more efficient and performant for a variety of reasons I won't go into here. So while it might still have a tendency to get warm it shouldn't throttle like the G2 and it should use less battery.

We will see shortly. But I think she would be happy with a Pixel. Most women I have known value simplicity and cameras in a smartphone and I think the Pixel is the best Android phone in those categories.

Unless you just have a printing press near by or like losing a lot of money fast then I wouldn't consider a new phone for at least 2 years of I bought a Fold. The folds regardless of major US brands cost almost double what the Pixel's cost. You literally bought two phones and if you upgraded anything then it cost even more.

Besides now that you have a Pixel Fold you are technically on a different track. Next year when the fold 2 comes out that is your time to upgrade so I wouldn't say you skipped a Pixel yet. If you don't get the best Pixel Fold then I would agree. Lol

Yeah I know, have just had all of them previous pixels, but you are correct. My path is different now, and will stick with it for as long as available. Really enjoy Foldable form factor as a nice change.

This is misleading. Google states same battery life in 8 Pro vs 7 Pro. The battery did not increase in size and the screen is brighter so if anything you’ll get less battery life.

The modems Google uses (made by Samsung) is nowhere as good the Qualcomm stuff other brands use. Huge difference in coverage and data speeds.

No it is not misleading. The Tensor G3 is on 4nm advanced process node vs 5nm process node, it has a different core architecture with arm v9, it has 9 cores to spread out tasks better, it has ddr5x ram. So we should see a significant uptick in battery life vs the Tensor G2. Unfortunately, Google cheaped out on the storage and gave ufs 3.1 instead of the faster and more efficient ufs 4.0.

We will also have Android 14 installed and whatever optimizations to the software Google has added with the new Pixel. I am guessing about a 20% increase in battery life with a 20% increase in performance at the same time. The screen has LTPO down to 1hz vs the battery guzzling screen on the 7 Pro which will also lead to improvements in battery life and besides the processor and 5g modem the screen is the other big user of juice. So if both the processor and screen are more efficient it should even with the same battery size give better or longer battery life.

In real life the difference in coverage and data speeds is not as big as you are making it out to be. But I will admit that the Samsung modem is not as fast as Snapdragon but again in real world use it is not a huge difference. In a lab with perfect conditions the differences would be more appreciable in my personal opinion than in real life. The modem can also be updated by firmware updates to improve both coverage and data speeds but will probably never match snapdragon.

I mean I have used a Snapdragon 8 gen 2 and Tensor G2 in the exact same real world situations and I have never felt the Tensor G2 felt slow, didn't stream music, maps, etc with any problems even with a low signal. So I have noticed the SD 8 gen 2 might have better reception in some areas but it doesn't mean the Pixel is unusable. It might be slower in certain areas or circumstances but it has never created a problem for me. YMMV. I am not trying to mislead anyone.

I think most people know what they are getting into by purchasing a Pixel. There are advantages and disadvantages to the Pixel line. It is very mature but still needs a few more iterations until they get everything right, if they ever do. That being said the fact that Google will support this phone for 7 years is a pretty good indication they are confident the performance and overall package will last that amount of time and still be useable.

"From the CPU architecture itself, you can gauge that Google is being conservative with the clock speeds because these cores can go much higher, as we have seen with last year’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The only outcome you can draw with this is that Google is looking to maximize efficiency rather than chasing top-notch performance with the Tensor G3, and that is a good thing in 2023."

Ordered an Obsidian 8 Pro 256GB...

Then, cancelled a few hours later.

Sorted out the last nagging issues with S23+ so I'm not shipping it back for a refund.

The Samsung keyboard is cool/refreshing, though slightly buggy. Otherwise, a lot of plusses to keep riding this pony for a while.

Note to others: make sure you adb disable whatever dupe Samsung apps and extraneous crud prior to adding Corp M$ InTune portal.

Can't delete more stuff via USB connection (now profile 10, I instead of 0) with my MBP anymore.

The new Pros look so much better than last years due to the matte finish and rounded corners. Really great.

However, after reading all the new features and specs I have to ask…how are they justifying the price increase? I don’t see anything there that increases their cost enough to raise the price by $100. Same storage, same materials, still the cheap optical scanner. The regular pixel I can see I guess raising the price, but the Pro doesn’t have enough upgrades to justify it. Also, Google have to start getting the Tensor thermals figured out. If the rumors are true, it’s still overheats pretty easily.

Should be a great phone, the price increase just rubs me the wrong way. Oh and did they mention any upgrades to the modem supplier or radio? Still huge weak points of the Pixel lineup.

I'm dictating into my pixel 7A because it's just that awesome, That said, I'm curious to see how the new phone does in this situation.

Continuing my dictation, I really curious to see how the speakers are on the pixel 8. I have been disappointed with every pixel model that is come out since my pixel 3, or I should say, any phone that doesn't have two forward facing speakers. I am okay with a small forehead and chin, so long as stereo audio is good.

Until the 15 pro iPhone, nothing has quite matched the separation and sound fidelity of my old and quite small pixel 3 with dual forward facing speakers. It's not that I use speakerphone very often, however, casually watching a podcast or Netflix video in a quiet room is something I enjoy with any good OLED phone. While video quality has gotten better on pretty much everything, the audio on most phones is actually quite terrible.

If I had to label my pixel 7a the 7 before it and my 6 before that, I would call all of them Tin Man.

20% increase in battery and performance is hilariously optimistic. Qualcomm and Apple have more experience making chips and even they don’t get 20% year over year increases.

And you can’t argue with the numbers. Plenty of YouTube videos showing Pixel data speeds for download and upload are consistently slower than iPhone and other phones using Qualcomm modems.

They also show the Pixel sticking with LTE majority of the time when other phones are able to grab mid band 5G.

Just for reference:

Snapdragon X70 5G modem
Up to 10 Gbps Peak Download
Up to 3.5 Gbps Peak Upload

Samsung Exynos 5300 5G modem
Up to 3.0Gbps Peak Download
Up to 422Mbps Peak Upload

Google is using inferior modems.

According to a comparison of the Google Tensor G2 and Google Tensor G3 mobile chipsets, the Tensor G3 is 21.59% faster than the Tensor G2 in terms of CPU speed 1. The Tensor G3 has 1 x 3GHz & 4 x 2.45GHz & 4 x 2.15GHz CPU cores, while the Tensor G2 has 2 x 2.85GHz & 2 x 2.35GHz & 4 x 1.8GHz CPU cores 1.

The Tensor G3 is expected to bring considerable performance improvement over last year’s Tensor G2 1. However, it’s worth noting that the Tensor G3’s performance improvement over the Tensor G2 is modest compared to chips from other manufacturers 2.

This is from Microsoft AI.

Did anyone here get the Silver Mesh/Milanese Band with their Pixel Watch last year?

Was thinking of using my credit towards it.

So I cancelled my order again to remove the case and change my watch band colour. I'm 100% settled now, obsidian 8 Pro and the silver/porcelain watch combo. 🤣
Same. I cancelled my order because after thinking it over the difference in trade between the Pixel 6 and the 7 Pro was $95. So I resubmitted the order with the P6 instead.
