I'm on the fence whether to keep my Pixel 8 pre-order or wait. Waiting means seeing the reviews and potentially getting the phone cheaper. Another option is hang on to my Pixel 5 for another year, really like this phone.

Some outstanding features of Pixel phones are Live Translate. You speak into the phone and it translates it into another language on the fly, no waiting. That's a great feature if it's not a language you speak or understand. I have had people asking for help and they spoke into their Pixel and it translated their language into English with a super high accuracy rate. Languages are limited as Google adds more to Live Translate.

I absolutely LOVE that feature. I suck at Spanish, and being in Texas.. there are many that only speak Spanish.. comes in really handy!! Also helped me immensely when I traveled to Canada and didn't understand a word of French lol

Get the phone, give it a couple of days use. Dont like-return.

But I fear given your recent history with phones that you’ll be cuddling your 5 for a while yet. Lol

The Porcelain and Blue ( bay ) 8 Pros are pretty sweet.. Had a chance to play with them briefly yesterday ( family member who may or may not be directly involved with Android DevOps 🙃 )
Is the Porcelain like a white or gold tinted? It looks white to me, but I've heard there may be a gold tint to it.

I reckon Google's new update commitment of seven years of software support including Android OS upgrades is superb. This shows they are now fully invested in Pixel, I am very interested to see where they can take the line up with the contunual progression of AI.

Then, they make things even better with the commitment; Google's provision of 7 years of spare repair parts for both the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. This is going to give us peace of mind if the hardware does go wrong.

Hopefully Google does not pull the plug on either of these commitments down the line.

Yeah, I’ve decided I’d quit YT altogether if I had to watch the ads. I won’t subscribe to a streaming service if there isn’t as ad free option. YT Premium is probably the last of the streaming services I pay for that I‘d give up too.
I wish premium would also take out """ Like, comment, subscribe and click the "DING" Bell""". I quit YouTube over that along with the ads themselves.

I would love to watch some of these YT reviews, but that stuff makes my teeth itch. Man I miss the AAA Podcast, I would always listen to that for Pixel reviews. Still have yet to find an alternative that I like.

What an opportunity! Can I ask for your personal view on the video, what was the quality like? For the Bay aesthetics, do the sides and rear stand out as really shiny / polished like the videos show? I do think the blue colour looks amazing. If Google had released the Bay with matte black sides & rear camera bump (like the Pixel 4XL) I would have been all over that. As it stands I've opted for Obsidian as a safer long-term option.

I hear ya. Imagine being an owner of a construction business in Texas and the need to speak Spanish. I took 7 years of it between school and college and I still struggle. Google Translate has helped me many times.

Android 14 dropped on two of my Pixels. Far more customization than in the past. Themed icons now have more depth, vibrant colors and shading as well as more options such as customizing the lock screen with different fonts and colors. It still feels like A13 but with more customization options.

Also, at least on my Pixel Fold, I've experienced much better battery life on the Android 14 betas.

Can't believe they removed wireless charging from the pixel watch. I may just keep my order in and sell it. Don't really need another set of Pixel Buds Pro and, while I like them, they are far from my favorite. I like the way they work seamlessly with the Pixel but find them lacking a bit in sound, mainly the volume seems to be quite a bit lower than my Airpods Pro 2 and Samsung Buds Pro 2. They are still good quality, but just don't quite have the punch the others do.

That's what I'd do. I am keeping a Pixel 4 XL for now, the 8 is super underwhelming and the 8 Pro is too big. If I had a 5 I'd not even consider upgrading as that's such a good one.

Does anyone have any advice or tips for someone going from an iPhone (for years) to a Pixel?

I decided yesterday to pre-order after watching the keynote...
But I'm thinking the switch from iOS to Android will be a shock for me.
Also, does anyone know where I can get pretty cases/skins for it? I'm not finding many like I would for my iPhone. I'm just hoping I didn't make the wrong move.

First advice is find 3rd party, cross-platform alternatives for any of the Apple apps you use. Apple Music is available on Android but that’s it. You can try to replace with the Google equivalents too since most exist on iOS as well. Regardless, moving away from reliance on Apple platform only apps and services makes moving back and forth much less difficult. Trying to get iCloud to play nice with Android is often problematic. I use it for many things but I long ago migrated my contacts and calendars to my Google account and use it to sync on all platforms.

Second, as others have said, be patient and take time to explore Android. Don’t expect it to work just like iOS and don’t try to force it to.

For those who got the PW1 last year: I’m guessing you got the 6 month Fitbit Premium offer. Does that have to be redeemed immediately or can you do it at another time/date?

I went a bit Google crazy today.

Buds Pro ordered in Charcoal
Accessories, opted for the Coral, Bay & Charcoal silicone cases
Bellroy black leather case
Watch leather strap
Watch woven strap

Close down laptop and run away from the Google Store.
I've been eyeing the Bellroy case, I had it for the Pixel 4 but it wasn't very good IMO. It doesn't seem to have the plastic sides anymore at least.

I really want to to try the pixel 8 pro live, I wonder if they fixed the jittery/janky/choppy scrolling that Exynos/tensor chips have since years :/ it is very noticeable while scrolling in chrome and social media apps like reddit, twitter and LinkedIn.

I have that with 1-2 apps on my 7 Pro. Scrolling in Chrome has not been an issue especially with a 120Hz refresh rate. I can't say if the 8 Pro will suffer from that. Although the Tensor 3 SoC supposedly similar in performance to the SD8 Gen 2 which Samsung uses and that's no slouch. I've also read (I posted a link) that the T3 supposedly has some performance headroom for the future as Google was targeting efficiency over performance. We shall see when my phone arrives.

Maybe I'm imagining things but scrolling in chrome feels smoother with android 14 on my pixel 7 , what remains janky are the animations when you are switching tabs or opening a new tab. Damn I have so many hopes on the pixel 8 pro 🫣🤐 ... don't disappoint me Google 😵

We don't know, so lets wait and see when the phones get released to the public. If the Tensor 3 does in fact perform close to the SD 8 Gen2, then that should be plenty fast. It boils down to how much resources Google is using and taking resources away from the SoC with its AI logic.
