Ok just got back from Best Buy, fondled some phones :)

-Pixel 8 / 8 Pro on display. There was some chatter online recently about the regular Pixel 8 not feeling like a true smooth 120hz display, and I noticed it myself, the Pixel 8 felt a bit weird, almost like a 60hz screen, I checked if Smooth Display was on, and yes it was, but something felt off, it seemed liked choppy animations or something. But the overall phone size was perfect very great shape and feel, and display was bright. Now the Pixel 8 Pro, yes that was smooth as silk, it was definitely 120hz and very fluid. The screen was crisp and bright. But between the two phones the 8 Pro just felt much faster and snappier, it was a noticeable difference.

-Galaxy S23 Ultra, dumb demo mode, still can't get a feel for the phone. The Samsung rep was there and she has a S22 Ultra as her personal phone, said I could play with hers, so I did :) Maybe the S22U is just on poor hardware, but I clearly saw hiccups, and it felt jittery like it was on 60hz display setting? It wasn't slow or laggy, no. but it had a weird feel to it, and I did not like it.

-iPhone 15 Pro Max, you know my dislike for iOS, but dang, that is a smooth phone, I love the FLAT display and how it goes edge to edge, and even the UI / screen goes to the very bottom of the phone, no chin, I like that. The screen is beautiful and opening and closing apps is so smooth and fluid, and I love how each app can have it's own individual settings, with like font size options per app, that's a very nice feature, and I'm surprised Android never adopted that. So I will eat crow, I have to say the iPhone 15 Pro Max is a very nice phone.
I have NEVER chosen a phone or tablet because of its smoothness. I use an iPad and it gets choppy at times even in the settings menu. I also have a Samsung Galaxy Tab S7+ that is as smooth as any current iPad Pro. I prefer iPad's for tablet use.

Yes the iPhone especially with promotion have smooth screens but the question becomes does iOS have superior core apps vs Android. For me the answer is NO. IMO Chrome is much better than Safari in many ways, Gmail is better than Apple Mail, Google Maps (no contest), I prefer Android's notifications over iOS, I'll take Google Messages over iMessages. And then there's Google's AI Assistant, (no contest vs Siri which is still stuck in 2013). For me Google's Call Screener is a necessity (wiped out all of my Robocalls).

So do I choose phone smoothness over app performance? No, it's the reason I use an iPad over Samsung's tablets. The iPad just does things better even though the iPad is nowhere as smooth as the Galaxy Tab S7+. The same is true for my phones. I find Android just does things better and its core apps are much better than Apple's core apps.

That's the reason why Samsung and Google went with curved displays, they are easier to hold (narrower).
I'm team curved screen all the way. Don't care about the sleek look or "cool" factor. Im on record, many times, saying it's a huge ergonomic advantage to these huge phones. Way easier to hold and gives the illusion of being smaller than it is in the hand. Unless they make a Pro model in the size of the standard 8, curve me, baby!

I think it's bad choice (on paper) but I'll see when I get the new phone.

I think I prefer Snow over Porcelain. It's looks a bit too warm. I will stick with Obsidian.

Interesting information coming in over at XDA. They say the 8/8 Pro camera sensors are not the old GN1's as many people are claiming but actually slighter newer Samsung ISOCELL GNV sensor found on the Vivo X80 Pro which was one of the best phones for still photos. The GNV has a sensor size of 1/1.3-inch. Google says the main camera can now take in 21% more light than the Pixel 7 main cameras.

yeah and with bigger aperture should see a good difference in low light

Yeah, it's going to be really good to see the Pixel capabilities with the GNV sensor & larger aperture. AI software enhancements aside, I'm expecting the 8 Pro cameras to perform very well in low light conditions.

Looking forward to your camera comparisons again on X!

Wow that's dedication lol. Going to be great to see how the P8 Pro cameras stacks up against the S23 Ultra & 15PM + any of the China phones if you have them to test.

Good look at the P8 Pro size vs the 6 & 7 Pro. Slightly wider but shorter than the 7 Pro.

Also a decent discussion about the Google embargo restrictions.

Yeah does that make me slightly suspicious I have to say.
If you approach the Pixel phones as a phone that prioritizes software over hardware than you will have NO problems with the Pixel phones. If you are someone who prioritizes hardware over software than you will probably be disappointed because Google typically targets software over hardware. Not even the mighty Apple can match the level of software innovation and sophistication that Google pulls off with it's phones. As Marques likes to say, it's all about Google's software magic.

If you think dropped frames or mild janky scrolling here or there might annoy you then it is probably best to look elsewhere for a phone. Personally for me the Google hardware side never bothers because I buy Pixel phones for the software and nobody does it better today, than Google.

I think you have summed it up brilliantly! Google's software is on another level, it is beautiful and fun, their UI is really great... is just that their hardware has so many issues, every year it always is behind Samsung's and Apple's.

Dropped frames in the UI and jank really irk me and kinda ruin the experience for me, for example scrolling through google maps lists and cards on any android device makes me wanna put the phone down, it is a stuttery, janky mess. The thing is iOS doesn't excite me, it isn't fun to use, it is so boring; the notifications are just BAD (I end up kinda turning them off for everything but messages and emails)...

So what do people who enjoy fun and good design AND a smooth jank free UI should do? :(

I'd miss the inner screen too much. I use it all the time on my fold4.
Fair play.

You lot don’t breed confidence in these phones the way you order and cancel in the frequency you do! Lol

Is it because you see them as a supplementary phone as opposed to your daily driver?

It would be my daily driver, I only have one phone at once. I really like my fold4 but prefer Pixel OS and I didn't want to pay £1,750 for the Pixel Fold so I think the 8 Pro was some weird justification to get Pixel OS.

I cancelled twice. The 1st time was for a color change. The 2nd time was because I got a crazy too good to pass up deal. Like a porcelain Pixel 8 Pro 256GB, Pixel Watch 2, Pixel Buds Pro and 2 years of cellular service for $750. And Pixel phones have been my daily driver since the Pixel 4a and before that it was the Nexus 4, then Nexus 6 until they released the Pixel 4a.
