Revised: I am running Yosemite on my brand new macbook air and iOSX 7.1.2 on my iPhone 5s. so far I can not see any option to allow Hand Off on my iPhone. Do I need to be running iOSX 8?

----------

Yes.

And I think Handoff doesn't work on iPhone 4s anyway, but I might be wrong on this one.

Sorry, I misspoke. I have an iPhone 5s. Any help would be great appreciated.

Tear in space time Continuity...

Hello,

I have just updated to iOS 8 beta 5, and I have noticed that I have been receiving text messages on my mac, but I cannot reply to them, and also when I try to make phone calls from my mac it says "Your iPhone is busy" Anyone else had the same issues? I apologize if someone has already asked this question, I did not want to dig through all the other threads.

I'm assuming you read the first post of this thread on what to check for to make sure everything is set up properly?

I couldn't make it work until I set both devices to log in with my mac.com address - NOT my icloud.com address. I'm guessing that one of the three (mac.com, me.com, iCloud.com) gets set as the primary somehow - when I'm registering a computer with iTunes Match, it only lets me use the mac.com address, that's what gave me the hint. Anyway, worth trying all three until it works - it did for me!

pair each user with his/her device

My wife and I each have iphones and ipads and our iMac is set up for different users. Will the Hand Off and Continuity allow to have each 'user' access just that person's device(s)? For example, if I'm working on the computer, I won't need to answer calls to her or reply to text directed at her. It makes sense. Maybe this has already been addressed, forgive me if it has.

Handoff only works if two or more devices are logged in with the same Apple ID. If you and your wife have separate Apple IDs, you won't receive her messages or calls on your Mac or any other iOS devices. However, if you have a shared account, it's reasonable to create a separate account for each person, and then add them to 'Family' using iCloud Family Sharing feature.

On a Mac, it will receive calls and SMS from another iPhone only if it currently logged in with that person's account.

I've had success in getting handoff to work with applications and even iMessages. SMS doesn't have the same effect and phone calls are received on my mac, but not entirely. There's no notifications of an incoming call, yet FaceTime does show missed calls in the call log on my mac and I can call out from my contact list. Volume is terrible though.

Right just to make it clear, Bluetooth is not required for SMS & Phone calls correct?

SMS - No since that goes through iCloud
Phone call - Yes. I haven't been able to dial out from my 2009 MBP other than error out with Call Failed.

iPhone Cellular Calls

To add to the debate regarding which email address must be used to enable iPhone Cellular Calls, I tested the email address used in FaceTime settings on my iPhone 5S, my iMac, and my iPad 3. I have 3 email addresses tied to my Apple ID; @gmail.com, @iCloud.com, and @me.com. My iPad only works with the @me.com address, while my iPhone and iMac must be logged in to the @gmail.com address. All calls from my iPhone were successfully routed to both my iPad and my iMac with these settings.

My suggestion is to just try different addresses until it lets you slide the iPhone Cellular Calls toggle (iOS) or check off the iPhone Cellular Calls box (OS X).

I cannot for the life of me get handoff to work. I'm running the latest Yosemite and iOS 8 DPs. I'm on a retina MacBook Pro with the necessary bluetooth and an iPad 4. I have the option enabled on both the computer and iPad. Both are using the same iCloud address.

The only thing I can think of is that I've had my Apple account for so long it's not actually an Apple provided email address, but one of my personal ones.

Anything else I should be trying? Followed all the steps in the first post.

I have a 2009 MBP running yosemite and I am able to get text handoffs on it. I thought it wasn't supposed to work on the older macbook pros? I did see if the call handoff worked and that did not, only worked on my iPad mini. Oh well I'll take the texts working.

Handoff is the part of Continuity that allows OS X and iOS to transfer what you're doing between them, starting an email on one and then finishing it on another. That works over Wifi AC (only needed on the Mac end so far). SMS (texts) works via iCloud based on reports from others.

I searched the Internet for hours trying to figure out how to get Hand off and Continuity and phone calls to work. I thought I'd put all that stuff in one place and hopefully save someone the trouble of trying to collect this information themselves.

Initial Steps:

-On your Mac go to About this Mac > System Report. Under the Bluetooth Category your LMP version needs to be 0x6.. Anything lower And the hand off feature will not work. I have heard phone call do however.

-On Your Mac: Go to system preferences > General > and click the "allow handoff" box at the bottom.

-On your iDevice Go to settings > general > and enable hand off.

-On your Mac open FaceTime and go to preferences. Check the "allow iPhone calls" box.

Next few steps:

- Make sure Bluetooth and Wifi are turned on for both devices.
- Make sure you are logged in to the same iCloud account on both devices.
- Make sure that your FaceTime is also logged in to the same account (this is needed for the phone calls feature to work).
- Make sure you are on the same Wifi network. Especially if you have a dual band Router. Both devices need to be on the same band to work. Don't connect to 2.4ghz on on device and 5ghz on the other.

How to verify Hand off actually works or not:

- If you open a web page in Safari on your iDevice you should get a bouncing icon on your Mac computer dock that shows up on the left end of the dock (it will kind of look out of place).

- If you open a web page on your Mac with Safari the lock screen of your iDevice should show an icon opposite the camera icon. Swipe up to open it.

Making phone calls

Open the contacts app on your Mac IF you click the phone icon it should say calling using iPhone.

Hope this helps.

P.S. you do NOT need to pair your devices.

Forgot to add if Safari is in private mode it doesn't hand off.

please help , i tried everything , logging in and out / activate deactivate accounts , selecting all emails associated with iCloud , and yet all i can do is calling from my Mac (Working great) but whenever i receive a call on my iPhone , it does not divert to the Mac.:(:(:(:(

No luck here either. Late 2013 iMac on Yosemite DP6 and iPhone 5s on Beta 5 and no handoff or ability to place / receive calls.

I know the handoff did work at one point. So its my guess DP6 broke it.

EDIT: Both on same WiFi hosted by a Time Capsule. Both logged into same iCloud account. Both with Bluetooth on.

AFAIK, you need matching builds on both devices. So DP5 with Beta 5. That's what other users are reporting.

Thank you OP! I was struggling trying to get my iPad Mini to make and take calls. Your guide cleared it up.
