The Yellowing problem has been found....

Now I wonder how they will fix it..read all about it here...this is it in the nutshell..the full article link below...

quoted from Gizmodo...

I now am fairly certain that the yellowing of the display is a manufacturing defect involving the distance between a layer of material used to diffuse the LED backlight and the LCD panel. To show a perfectly even color, this light scattering panel has to be absolutely flat and free of any warping, kinking, or thickness defects. It is this layer that I believe is at fault, and causes the color to drift and give the perception of yellow stripes, fields, and corners.
This would be absolutely consistent with the reports of horizontal and vertical stripes (a vertical or horizontal kink) or corners (a bad tuck). I believe these defects may not appear in the factory. Rather, with the rough handling the monitors receive when shipped this layer gets knocked out of alignment.
I don't know what Apple could do to solve this problem, other than a wholesale change of manufacturer for the panels, or a complete redesign of the panels themselves to better pin the diffusion layer.
It also explains why my careful assembly and dis-assembly resulted in the yellowing disappearing. By being cautious, I basically returned the monitors to the original factory state of perfect alignment.

That article is pure speculation.

Can people with week 5 or 6 machines clarify if this issue is indeed fixed?

My replacement is scheduled to ship Feb 19.

Apple said it is expedited and that I would get it before others.

Tracking still says 19th so I fail to see how this is expedited.

I would rather wait longer and be guaranteed a problem free screen anyway.

Sorry but this has been posted before, but thanks for posting again. :)

I'm waiting for gizmodo's update this Wednesday.

That Gizmodo article sounded like they could be on to something until I got to this part. Does it really seem like the fix for this would require a "wholesale change of manufacturer" or "complete redesign" of the panels? E.g., how about reinforcing the mechanism by which the panel is currently held flat?

Makes me strongly suspect the whole thing is bs.

Can't wait to get home tonight and try out my just-delieved replacement i7... I hope the problem is fixed, at least for me (well, for everyone else, too, but I don't want ot be greedy. ;) )

Let us know how the replacement goes.

I hope that they already have addressed the issue and the rumors about production shutdown are false.

You can't make an omelet without breaking eggs... - Sorry, wrong quote.

You can't fix power supply with a firmware update... - Now, it's better.

I was in my local Apple store on Sunday and had a chat with the store manager about my yellow week 46 27" i5. He told me they have no stock or even parts for 27" iMacs. Everything is on hold for this product until the issue has been "resolved". He did tell me the 3 week window is the worst case scenario and said my replacement display should arrive "within" 3 weeks but most likely sooner.

They havent halted shipment...

This is an update - I emailed the article to Steve Jobs himself..and got a response from his iphone..that the gizmodo people dont know what they are talking about and they they have a handle on the problem. I also got a call from the apple store monday that my machine shipped and will be there the end of this week. I told them I wouldnt accept this yellowing problem and that I will thoroughly test it out in the apple store to see if its problematic. They told me they would not replace it again...Im quite annoyed about hearing that. But I did call apple tech support and told them if the machine, was yellowed I wouldnt be happy and that apple stores are telling everyone they wont replace it again. They said I should call to apple tech and they would arrange to escalate it. I dont know what they will do...also, the guy at the store seemed confident that there wouldnt be any more problems with the machine..i will post exactly what i find on friday...so the machines are once again moving thru the channels...I'll hold my breath on this one....

Called yesterday, after 2 replacements, this time the response was different.
They tried to push me in an wait period of 3 weeks. Cause there would be a firmware fix... I didn’t bite... it's a hardware issue.. so i demanded a change whitin the 14 day period. After arguing I was transferred to a sales rep..
She told me that this exchange would be the last one... After that, I would get my money back! So my 3th replacement (4th machine) must be oke... otherwise I’ll be forced to leave the iMac podium and wait for revision 2.
Or maybe buy the cheapest Mac mini... and use it with my Philips 19" CRT until Apple solves this annoying thing. Furthermore I’m anxious how the iPad with the same ISP technology will do....

So the third time seems to be a charm. First two machines had yellow tint near the bottom of the display. Just received my third replacement. It's a week 05 build, with both firmware updates already applied. Went through all the various display tests, and this machine is actually yellow-tint free (I know people probably want pictures... I'll post if requested). There's one dead pixel near the lower right hand corner... I don't really care on a display this large (and would expect at least a few). The foam packaging was actually cracked, which was unsettling, leading me to believe that a lot of the failures are a result of transporting a 42.5 lb machine around the world. Also, since I went through executive relations, this particular machine was pre-screened before leaving the factory (or so I was promised). Your mileage may vary... and yes, this was a somewhat frustrating experience that I hope Apple has worked out.

The fear of owning a ticking time bomb like the entire line of MacBook Pros with defective 8000 series Nvidia cards that would all fail eventually.

I hear you man, i have that same feeling now, already got my i5 :)D) first day buzzing and high pitch sound. second day high pitch sound only. I hope on the third day there will be nothing lol

I think my week 5 still has a tint (discovered via the test). However, it is not very distracting, and I can live with it.

Actually, mine does have a slight yellow tint on the right hand side of the display. Oh well. It's not as bad as the first two so for now I'm keeping it. Interestingly enough, when performing these tests on other LCD displays, I've yet to see any that are completely uniform (other than laptops/notebooks).

Mark my Words

Apple will release a solution soon...how soon you ask! February 15 is the mentioned date!

21,5" and 27" should be problem free!

got off the phone with apple..here's what i found out

I have a machine thats coming to the apple store this friday that supposedly has been fixed..then again, its prob week 5 and four of you are saying your seeing the yellowing...they will get my machine in..open the box...test the machine out thoroughly...and call me to come in..i will test the machine out and spend a half hour looking for yellowing and pixel problems as well as noise and chewed up disks...according to apple, it may take them 5 weeks until they have resolved all the issues on these...once they completely figure it out..all machines from that point on should be problem free. I was told they have not completely figured it out. I was also told I can refuse this machine and tell them I want to wait the 5 weeks until the problems are fixed. The feb 15th date is B.S. I believe the guy on the phone....and Im wiling to wait...so I have the best of both worlds...what scares me is my machine has the slight yellowing problem. but nothing else..no noise...quiet as a mouse..and I dont want some other machine thats going to give me other problems...almost willing to keep my slightly yellowed machine...lol

Your iMac got the yellow issue too? Week 4 or 5?

Week 4, it's very slight almost unnoticable, but...well it's there lol, and i have a buzzing sound accompanied by a high pitch sound

---|

I will have a TNT truck pick it up, they will call me in about 48h to arrange that, but today i'm going to pack it all up, i just can't stand to have the iMac there on the desk and knowing that it has a problem...going to bring back the old set up
