Compared it yesterday for kicks against a S6 for speed. The 10 was in demo mode, I opened apps on both simultaneously and then cycled through them. The S6 won especially opening apps, not by a wide margin but considering the processor and RAM I was surprised.
Opening apps side by side with my S7e, it opens them a little faster on the S7e than the HTC 10, but switching between apps via recent/multitasking seems a little faster on the HTC 10. But the difference is really quite marginal with the odd app switching behaviour.

In isolation i doubt folks would be able to tell any difference apart speedwise.

I also must stress, just as smooth as the S7e has been in its UI (outside of briefing/upday) the HTC has been just as smooth. They are both incredibly smooth, even scrolling in apps is also very smooth with both. So if anyone is worried about lag, well I am happy to report in my case there is no issue there anyway.

It is way too soon to tell about battery, i have to give it a few days to level out like all androids, but it's clear it's not going to last as long on charge as the S7e or 6S+ do.

Thanks for that info, I'm sure you will not see app refreshes with the 10 as I did not with the a9 even while it was in demo mode. And the !0 trounces the a9 so I'd be quite surprised if the 10 refreshes apps.

How's the audio and do you like the display, do you have the latter adjusted for vivid mode?

It might also be good to know that MRU is using Exynos in the S7e, and others might be comparing with Snapdragon. This will likely give slightly different experiences in speed, app refreshes, battery life, etc.

@MRU when you get around to installing that glass screen protector, please comment on whether or not it halo's around the edges or not. If it doesn't, then please share a link to the one you bought.

Thanks!

If they're more or less equal in terms of performance, how is Sense better than TW? Genuine question.

The one major thing I can see already is that Sense does away with duplicate apps. There are solutions to match that for TouchWiz, of course, but requires user-effort. So kudos to HTC for doing that out of the box. And I guess the lighter Sense helps with future updates?

Is there any day-to-day software features that Sense brings to the table that neither TW or any other skin does?

Sense is more akin to stock android that's been jazzed up a little. Like stock android on steroids.

It does away with much of the bloat under the hood (not just duplicate apps) - for example just it's memory utilisation standing still is around 1gb less than the S7e.

It's not necessarily about extra features as fundamentally you do pretty much the same thing with both, but if like me you spent time making Touchwiz look more material both icon wise and colour wise, then sense offers that out of the box without messing with theme.

When it comes to themes not only can you create your own on the fly, but you can choose which element you want or don't want. You are not restricted to applying everything if you just want custom icons or such.

If you prefer stock android aesthetically like I do, but want the customisation that Samsung TW at least offers, then Sense offers a great combination.

Simple things like being able to swipe between dialler / contacts / favourites in dialer are small changes that do offer a nice refined experience.

Most of what makes Sense better than TW will come down to subjective preference.

Nice elaboration. Thanks.

Being able to customize the specifics of themes is pretty cool sounding, too.

Camera update has made it much faster saving and i haven't had any laser block messages that others were reporting on early hands on either before or after the update.

I went to a TMO corp store and asked them when they would have the HTC 10...final answer......they have no clue.
Yeah...it's frustrating. A T-Mobile employee on Reddit said they are starting training this week, assuming he is correct, it should see release soon. Also, Dex (the unboxing dude we always see from T-Mobile) confirmed early this month. I have heard a rumor of may 12 (my bday, ironically). So hopefully, it should be soon.

T-Mobile, for all its trail blazing, has really dropped the ball lately.
-slower than other carrier updates, particularly in samsung phones.
- continuining JOD but making it harder to use.
-the while HTC situation.

If the next Nexus blows me away, I might sale my phone, and buy directly from Google. Get rid of all this carrier related nonsense.

Europe has the right idea.......buy the phone....then decide who to have as your carrier.
What news did you see about JoD?

This is all from Reddit:

Essentially eip is more profitable and being pushed. Sales agents are not getting commission from JOD. Essentially your best bet is to call via the phone to do a jump. There doesn't seem to be any problem there, it's just some sales people in the stores have motivation to push eip now.

From what I have read, and from contacting support, JOD is here to stay, but isn't at the forefront of T-Mobile advertising.

Honestly, I have considered jumping to thr cheapest phone they will do JOD with, and selling it; or just selling my s7 edge. T-Mobile swears it's here to stay, but I am weary.

The note 6 is the only thing that gives me pause, since an unlocked route isnt really accessible in the US yet. But the HTC and future Nexus devices are.

Just my thoughts.

Hmmm....the only reason I stay with TMO is for JoD. VZW has better coverage where we go hiking and off-roading.
But yeah....no matter what phone i have at the time, I will jump to the Note 6 when it comes out.

I posted this on XDA, but to anyone who is reading this and debating between the S7 Edge and the HTC 10, this is why I decided to sell my S7E and switch to the 10:

  • Edge screen, while it looks very nice, is a PITA with accidental touches
  • The glass back feels and looks disgusting after a few minutes of use
  • Even at max volume, the speaker is not loud enough to hear podcasts while in the shower. After it gets wet, the speaker is unusable for half a day until it dries.
  • You really need to have a case, otherwise it's like walking with a piece of china, always worried it could slip and shatter
  • It lags horribly. I performed 2 factory resets and disabled a lot of bloat, but the keyboard, UI, and apps lag a lot more than my 6P
  • Fingerprint reader is horrible. The 6P was instant and 95% accurate, the S7E is slow and more like 75% accurate, plus you have to press the button first
  • Needed to buy the Verizon model with limited band support
  • Samsung Pay is really hit or miss with me. I decided to try it out again last weekend at a convenient store and it kept failing. Useless when you have to carry your wallet with you anyways as a backup.

JOD is so awesome. Even if I don't decide to keep a new phone I could always jump back to the s7e. I'm looking towards more comparisons between the two.

That's not the norm for Europe. Most folks still buy phones here on contract, heavily subsidised. (On 24 month contracts).

The HTC 10 for example is a carrier exclusive in Ireland, i had to order from outside of the country to get an unlocked / unbranded model.

So situation in Europe isn't a whole lot better tbh.

Finger print reader on the 10 has been amazing. I haven't had a single fail read as yet. Very surprised.

The audio (been listening to a lot of music today) is amazing on the hi-res earphones. It also can get VERY loud, at about 50% it's equivalent to the S7e headphones at 100%. They really amp it up.

I need to discern if the headphone section and dac are the reasons for good audio. Please try other headphones with the 10 and please try those hi rez earphones on another smartphone (6s plus or whatever besides the s7e).
