HTC should make a white flag with the M10 at the center and waive it from the top of their HQ.

HTC 10 doesn't look very interesting except the rear side. At least they kept the flagship name simple because it is HTC's 10th branded flagship. Pass. HTC peaked in design in 2013 and hasn't reached that level again. The Samsung Galaxy S6 / S7 edge and Xiaomi Mi 5 still look better.

The M10 looks intwresting6. But I wouldn't get a phone smaller than 5.5 tbh. Bring on a larger device and I would consider it.

Still don't understand why they gave up dual stereo speakers on the front of the device? That was an HTC signature for years. I hope that the latest leaked "prototype" is not the actual design. If not, then it is a fail on HTC's part.

No, I was agreeing with you. I was saying that they already had a 5-inch phone, so it wasn't necessary to make another phone at that size point. I would have liked a 5.5-inch M10.
Oh sorry my bad :)
I think the M10 is a good looking phone from the leaked pictures.

I really wanted HTC to wow me this year like they did three years ago with the M7, one of the best designs and most OVERRATED smartphones of all-time thanks to its glowing reviews from 2013. Through hindsight, Note 3 was the best smartphone of 2013. Not Nexus 5, G2, or M7. I thought the M9+ was definitely better looking than the normal M9 last year. But I never really got the same feeling with this HTC 10 like I did with previous flagships from 2007-2014.

I think the Xiaomi Mi 5 definitely looks cooler than the HTC 10 and they are known for copycat designs with the button looking a bit too Samsung-ish. Even if you happen to fall for the 10 design which is an area HTC is great at, they are generally a one-trick pony. You still have to worry about HTC's poor camera sensors, questionable battery life, bad resale value, and terrible aftersale service. The entire ecosystem and package goes beyond the devices itself.

Design can only fulfill a person's short-term needs/wants. You need to have more foresight if you want to examine the entire package. Looking back, I was quite short-sighted falling for the HTC One M7 media hype with all its multiple best smartphone of the year awards when a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 probably would have lasted longer with me. Not lasting 21 months and then selling it off like with the M7 because I couldn't tolerate the purple photos and short battery life anymore. No real regrets selling off that pretty metal M7 turd .

a better place
HTC is in a bit of a place where it just can't win. People wanted it to get rid of its bezels, put in capacitive buttons with finger print reader that also works as home button. It does all that, but has to therefore relocate bottom speaker as there is no longer a big chin.

The M10 is like the product of appeasing everyone's complaints and yet then ending up with something that underwhelms generally aesthetically.

The 2800mah rumored battery is a massive increase on the original 1800mah the M7 launched with, but people are still unhappy because others have put bigger in their flagships. So again they can't cut a break.

I hope it does better than most of us think it will do, just because it will be sad to see a retraction in competition in our devices.

I have a seen a healthy amount of M8Ses and A9's over the last few months though, so maybe average Joe Soap isn't as critical or complaining as much as we do here.

I disagree. The buttons could have been bumped up, making way for a X9-like speaker. They no longer have that obtrusive front logo, so they could easily have done it.

As for the battery, pretty much every flagship at that size has a smaller battery, apart from the S7, and that's only 200mAh bigger. Same applies for the G5. On smaller phones the screen takes up quite a bit less power, so you don't need that big a battery.

How much of a demand is there for dual front facing stereo speakers on a smartphone?

I agree it has been an HTC signature, but I just don't see people clamoring for dual, front-facing speakers. Most people seem content just to use headphones or a bluetooth device.

HTC plays it too safe, the only way to get more market share is to make a splash. They won't be doing that this year- losing their signature speakers, adding a QHD screen (which is nice but a battery drain) isn't going to do it. Samsung is again king of Android and literally made a splash this year with water resistance, larger battery, SD slot return, and wireless quick charge... HTC is always a step behind.

Hard to tell because I haven't seen a viable non-scientific survey addressing front facing stereo speakers. The Nexus 6 and 6P have them though, so maybe Google thought their high end phones should include dual speakers?

HTC reportedly signs 3 year nexus deal with Google?

Interesting.

I don't know if this is a good idea per se. Maybe after this year they'll at least get to do one of the two nexus for the next 2 years.

Just read about this over on 9to5Google. I hope it is true. It might give HTC a lifeline. I'd hate to see HTC fold and lose a quality handset manufacturer.

After HTC released the Windows Phone version of the M8, I was hoping they would continue with the M9. Unfortunately they didn't.

I realize that Windows Phone sales aren't going to save HTC, but it gave them visibility in Microsoft stores and as a result put their brand in front of more people.

They need all the help they can get. Google's definitely throwing them a 3 year life line if it's all true.

If the rumors of HTC building Nexus devices for the next three years are true, the HTC 10 starts and other future HTC flagship starts looking less compelling. Most purists would rather have a stock Android with guaranteed and faster updates than a Sense skin. The 2016 HTC Nexus devices should be smartphones to look for this year for hardcore Android fans. Marrying HTC's expertise in hardware design while having the most mature and stable Android of the Material Design era and most refined since KitKat with the improvements in Project Svelte and Volta.

But a part of me isn't completely sold with the HTC Nexus three-year deal because HTC has always been consistently suspect with the camera, battery life, and other weird glitches. Their aftermarket services isn't great either. Other companies are just as good or better and can offer their devices cheaper. I also want to see Sony make a Nexus device someday. I hate to see HTC suffer because they are the pioneer makers of Android devices and touchscreen smartphones in general. I hate to see companies belly up and hear people lose their jobs. But I also want to see other OEMs shine too. HTC had their moment in the sun to shine. Others deserve their time to shine.

Google should just purchase HTC and use them as their ODM but brand only the Google name all over the Nexus devices. HTC goes back being an ODM. Google can brand all their Nexus phones while finally being considered a truer hardware / mobile brand.
