I could have had an X but got an 8 Plus instead. Love it! No regrets.

I love my X . Honestly not everybody likes the same things otherwise we all would have iPhones or android and all of us would have the same jobs , food taste and that would be boring

I still love my X and use it more than any other Apple device. I don't think its screen is too small but just about right and it fits comfortably in my jeans pocket. Remember when we were all using 3.5" phones?

I like my iPhone 8, too, but typing on it is difficult, certainly compared with the X or iPad Pro 10.5".

It would seem that the 8 is now a compact phone along with the Xperia series. I do like how light it is, though, and it's perfect for me reading in bed.

I had an iPhone 7 and gotten used to using a small 4.7 inch screen after years using Samsung phones that was getting bigger by the year ending with the Note 4. Had a 6 plus after that. Then went to a Note 8 and used my friends 7 for a bit it felt weird going back to that small phone . With the X it took a bit of time to get used to the smaller frame but the screen size is perfect for me .

Do you think Mac Rumors has a direct line to Apple? Wishful thinking. Happens all the time. We think our discontent somehow will translate into Apple seeing the errors of the ways. Good luck with that.

Do you really think that in 2018 companies like Apple don't have people on internet sites looking for problems/feedback? That the only way they get feedback is on their contact form? LOL

Same here.
I was pretty apprehensive about the iPhone X however the things I love about it.
  • Excellent battery life
  • FaceID is great, even in the dark
  • Photo quality is incredible and always look just amazing as well as slo-mo, and it's great in low-light
  • The speed of the thing
  • Way easier to exit and display running apps than other i(phones) with the button
  • Having no headphone jack is a non-issue due to the 3.5mm adaptor provided, the lightning headphones provided, and bluetooth
  • No malware that I do or don't know about (sorry android people had to add that in)
  • No bloatware (sorry again couldn't help myself)
  • Animoji's are fun and cool
  • ARKit provides some neat apps like augmented measuring app and ways to map out your home inside an app
  • No dead space around the screen means the screen size is the same or larger than most other similarly sized phones
Just wanted to reinforce a couple of your excellent points.
:apple:Several OP have complained of having to pick up their phones while in bed for Facial recognition. Not only does the phone unlock instantaneously in all light levels the second you look at it, but I fail to see what they would do with the phone without picking it up ?? I also cannot imagine that touch ID would be immediate with the phone lying down on the nightstand while you're lying down trying to get your thumb in the sweet spot.
:apple:Photos are so good that my DIL chose my photos over the professional photos taken for her website. The light and color were much better.
:apple:AirPods. enough said
:apple:Perfect size for one-handed manipulation.

Last point of my own. I have never shut off the phone with the side button, as it is too high. I just attempted to hold it at that height and it is unbalanced and could easily be dropped. Perhaps some practice holding it lower............

Suggest you look at the specs. Face ID only works when vertically aligned to your face. This was pointed out to me as a possible issue when I was having significant failures unlocking the X. I ad hoc tested it and found if I went past approximately 30 degrees out of alignment the number of failures grew until the rate was 100%.
Many are hoping that it will require only a software fix to allow landscape Face ID.

One other aspect, I found that over the course of a month, Face ID did not really learn and improve. Mayhap this was improved with 11.4?

One thing that has been helpful to me was to purchase the Spigen stand fast charger https://www.spigen.com/collections/wireless-charging.
I have one on my desk and one on my nightstand so I can see the screen and it's easy to briefly pick up for facial recognition. It also charges in both portrait and landscape modes while watching video due to a couple of extra charging rings.

Wow what a ruckus.

I wanted to give this phone a fair shot and I have. The first few months I chalked it up to “getting used to something different” and I’ve also been tolerating it because I am in the upgrade program (first time for that) and to me this phone has always been temporary.
Face ID works. I never said it didn’t. What I don’t like is having to pick up the phone when I don’t want to. I’d rather leave it flat on my desk and use my finger. So because I always have to pick it up it sucks.
I used to also like unlocking the phone while taking it out of my pocket so when I did look at it it was ready. Not so anymore.
I forgot to add that the lack of a headphone jack is really stupid. I use headphones every single day at the gym. I switched to Bluetooth for that but it never fails that when I want to plug it in somewhere else I don’t have that idiotic adapter with me. Why should I be expected to carry that around??? Dumb.
Also the smaller keyboard is less forgiving and texting quickly is impossible without errors. Forget Siri—she’s the worst she’s ever been. I noticed no one has disagreed with that.
I’m know I’m not alone in my dislike and sometimes hatred for this phone but I didn’t expect to get widespread support for that here—I mean look where we are. But I did expect a few to chime in and agree that this phone is lacking. I’ve googled that opinion and there are articles out there.
My friend and I had mostly discussed it amongst ourselves in the beginning but lately she and I noticed others we know were saying the same things about it. So I posted here to see if any of you agree. I searched first but couldn’t find what I was looking for, hence a new thread.
None of what was posted as a reply has changed my mind. I can’t wait to get rid of this thing. If the larger sized X is still a pain in the ass I’ll surely get rid of it quickly.
I wasn’t expecting nor wanting to argue with any of you so replying before now was not a concern. I did find all the posts claiming this thread to be for a reaction or for attention quite hilarious tho
If I wanted attention I would have replied to every reply. I did not start this thread with the intent to sway anyone either.

It might be that a little bit of flexible thinking would resolve your concerns and make this an amazing phone that meets your needs. To go backward would also necessitate giving up some of the features that we can all agree are amazing, e.g., OLED screen.
1. If you don't want to pick up your phone, get a stand wireless charger https://www.spigen.com/collections/wireless-charging (sorry for the duplication in another post). You will have to pick up the phone to use it anyway since it is hard to use a phone sitting flat on the desk (unless standing over it, of course). Face ID provides access to your phone just as quickly as touch ID out of your pocket. it is instantaneous. Looking at your phone after using touch ID and pulling it out of your pocket or looking at your phone and having it instantly unlock is not at all different in terms of the speed of accessing the phone.
One pleasant surprise for me has been that my banking, credit card and several high use shopping sites will now accept facial recognition. No more forgotten PW's or UserID's. That alone saves a lot of time looking those up to access the site.
2. AirPods. Instant access to whatever is playing;, music or podcasts or talking on the phone. Long battery life, quick charging or use one and alternate with the other.
3.Smaller keyboard. Well, you'll have to go back to the 8+ or wait for the X+. No solving that one.
4. Siri is the same on all iOS phones, so it doesn't matter which one you use.

If that's all, then I think you can resolve your perceived problems with the phone and maybe at least recognize the many other amazing features of the iPhone. Personally, I really appreciate how fortunate those of us here are to be able to own this device. If you still cannot resolve your issues and learn to like the phone, as others have said, just trade it in for one you do like instead of feeling so unhappy about it.

The phone most certainly does not unlock instantaneously in all light levels. In the 5 months I had the X I managed to unlock it in bed with FaceID once. Once. That’s just unacceptable.

I understand that it might not be the same experience for everyone, just has been mine. Night on the beach, sunglasses, bright sun at 6,000 ft elevation, camping.....I've never had a problem. That said, there is probably a difference in light levels in different bedrooms at night. Mine has large windows and it might be that there is more ambient light. Just thinking that maybe apple could add a low level light that illuminates when picked up just enough to read one's face in a virtually dark environment. At least that issue seems fixable. But I'm pretty sure there would be complaints about that too...........;)

Have an ANKER wireless charging stand I used for testing the 8+ and X. Works great.
For the facial recognition, like many I found it did not improve over time like some have claimed - ie. it didn't "learn.
From my testing post:
FaceID has a high failure rate when lying in bed in low light / dark – also failed when wearing my favorite Oakleys
I did find that the failure rate of Face ID, even after I found out about the vertical orientation requirement, was frequent especially in low light. Maybe it was my unit. Either way, the failure was more than the Touch ID failures on both the 8+ and Razer phones combined I was also testing.

Really? It’s just a phone.
And other than a notch, gen 1 Face ID, a poor OLED implementation, and a large price tag it brings nothing to the table.

Yes, it is just a phone, and everyone is entitled to their opinion about features they like and dislike. But overall, from a 30,000 ft view, I do believe that there are comparatively few people in the world who can own a device this advanced and pay for it. We are conservatively in the top 1% of the phone world at the very least. Compared to even just 10 years ago, look at the computing power, photography capabilities, communication options that we carry around. I prefer to appreciate the advanced features of the iPhone X rather than trash the whole device due to a few minor (IMO) features which will probably be updated in the next couple of years. Glass half full.............:)

You do amazing reviews with a lot of real world comparative detail which is not generally available. Just reading phone features is not helpful when making choices. Do you do this professionally?

Apple sells millions of X's. Id bet most are purchased on monthly payment plans through carriers. If you paid cash that might put you in the top one percent, but other than that the pedestal you want to stand on is not that high.

Do a bit of customer need analysis / risk analysis - computer systems. Project management.

I bought my note 8 full price $940 before tax. The $20 a month lease deal was to good to pass over paying full price imho

Umm poor implantation of an OLED screen ? Most if not all the tech reviews says it’s the best and meanwhile I agree it’s awesome I would put it a tad under the Note 8 ( never seen a S9 screen so no comment) actually after getting used to the gestures I actually love it. Almost as good as the nav buttons with Android imho.

“Pulse-Width Modulation, or PWM, is one of the ways display makers can use to adjust the display's brightness. PWM is considered to be an easy (or cost-effective) way to control the brightness, but it has serious drawbacks, such as flicker that may cause eye strain and headaches.”

Still, at least Apple saved a few $.

I think those times are rather faded where consumers are paying out right for smart phones, when they did retail for around $500-$600, but now with the rising cost of phones breaching well over $1000, carriers see this is a large advantage to take advantage of the consumer through ‘Promotions’ or trade in incentives. They use these tools as leverage to retain the consumer longer with the carrier without them considering switching.

Cool ? No head aches or eye strain for me . Still the best screen on an iPhone to date

Actually keep the low light as do to humans age the amount of melatonin depletes and more cannot be created with lamp post lighting just Moonlight, country setting is good because city lights are all around and bright.. so low natural lighting is best...the addition of a low level setting which illuminates is a good idea.

Perpetual and sustained payments. Basically the user will never own their phone. As far as I know the user does not pay interest on the monthly installment plan, but I wonder how long that will remain the norm. If most users are forever making monthly payments, and have to start paying interest on those payments, it will be just another revenue stream for the carriers.
