Not sure what the argument is about durability. There is nothing to suggest USB-C spec is technically stronger than lightning. It's up to the manufacturer and designer to use whatever materials to protect the cable.

If you're talking about Apple cables vs third party, third party uses PVC materials that are bad for environment (possibly toxic to humans) but are more durable and cheaper. Apple avoids that material.

Switching to USB-C means Apple will include a USB-C cable that's roughly the same durability assuming same materials are used.
OP posited that in forcing Apple to change from lightening to usb c the EU was causing damage to the environment.

My argument was that given lightening cables break all the time anyway having to buy different replacement cables makes hardly any difference to the environment.

I continued to suggest that in my experience thus far usb C cables have been more durable (I’ve not had one break yet), and if that holds out my impact on the environment might ultimately be slightly reduced.

🙂

Your argument is circulating around the portless iphone.
If and when this will happen is on apples part.

Up to now all iphone sold come with a cable in the box. doesn’t make a difference to the environment if this one is usbc or lightning. But as soon as all mobile devices use one cable it makes a difference. Thats why EU forces companies.

Magsafe would be the next environmental downfall as no other company is using it
I actually buy 6’ cables, so what’s in the box doesn’t matter to me. The shorter ones go back to Apple. MagSafe is magnificent, the only reason other companies don’t use it is because Apple likely has a patent on it.

It all starts with cables/ports. Next the EU will make triple ply toilet paper the new standard.

Which will be great for all those highway gas stations, skimping on their one ply nonsense.

✌️🙄👍
I use single-ply. But then I also use a bidet, which vastly reduces the use of paper. You should try it. Your bum will thank you and I’m not talking about your 26 year old who won’t get off the couch, either…. 😏

I am not taking it personal, you are making stuff up about EU trying to rule the world and seem to be getting worked up when I call you on that BS.

EU doesn't care what happens outside of EU in regards to this, they only care about what happens inside EU. That isn't trying to rule the world, they are just deciding policies within their own borders.
Wait a minute…the EU is NOT trying to take over the world? So then the ”Men in Black” eye-flasher thingie is real then!

switching to usb-c is terrible for the environment. thanks EU for this disaster.
Technological advancements are inevitable, and they often come with changes in connectivity standards. When Apple transitioned from the 30-pin connector to Lightning, similar environmental concerns were raised, yet that change eventually proved beneficial in terms of device functionality and compatibility.

Now, with the move to USB-C, there are clear advantages to consider as well. USB-C is becoming a widely adopted industry standard, which can lead to reduced waste by minimizing the need for multiple cables and adapters. This shift streamlines the user experience and encourages a universal approach to charging and data transfer.

The only frustration I have is Apple's use of USB 2.0 speeds on the lower end models. While change can be difficult and annoying, it's worth looking at the bigger picture and recognizing that these advancements are designed to enhance our devices' capabilities and minimize environmental impact in the long run.

USB 2.0 in 2023. Jeez. I remember building my PC in 2010 and I bought a motherboard that touted 3-3-3 (USB 3.0, DDR3, SATA3).

Oh and last week I was transferring photos to my Google Pixel XL (2016 phone) and using USB Type C 3.0. Pathetic.

I’ve been through countless lightning cables over the past ten years, they’re not exactly robust. They break all the time and go straight to landfill.

Meanwhile, and this is anecdotal of course, not a single usb c in our house has broken yet.

So I’m happy to switch to usb c which will hopefully cut down on my environmental impact a little. It most certainly won’t make it worse.
I’d always get “electrical burn” on one of the metal strips on mine. One of the always started going blacker. And then it’d stop working.

Are you serious? Users have no idea what 3nm processors even means. USB-C however is a thing users actually will notice. At this point most of us have more USB-C cables than lightning.

I actually have more Lightning than USB-C cables. About a 3:1 scale.

How are Type C ports a "pain" to use? I like the fact that I won't have to carry around 2 different cables for my devices.
Does the cable support Thunderbolt? Then no DP-Alt (yes I have a cable that does TB but bot DP-Alt) does the cable support USB 3.0? Does the cable support video at all? Does the cable support analog audio? Does it support 100W?

There are A LOT of differences between 2 USB-C cables. They look the same, but functionally they can't be more different. Lightning ALWAYS works.

I suspect in the case of the iPhone it won't matter whether the cable supports Thunderbolt or video out as I doubt the iPhone will support either.

I suspect we'll see USB2.0 speeds and PD charging, at a push, USB 3 speeds, although I wouldn't hold my breath on that.

We'd get USB3 if the iPhone needed that bandwidth over a cable, but I don't think Apple will add that iPad like functionality to the iPhone.

That's not my point. I can grab the USB-A to Lightning cable I got with the iPod touch I got when they introduced Lightning and use that same cable to charge my iPhone 14 Pro. It would work just as well as when I use the USB-C to Lightning cable that came with the phone.

It is impossible to do this with USB-C.

There's always going to be a period of pain when changing physical connectors, no matter what to/from.

Does anyone know if apple will bring out new earpods with usb-c connection? Will def buy those!

I find it to be more effort to plug in, lightening is as simple and easy as it gets. Plus lightening is smaller, slimmer. If phones get slimmer then USB-C could create a bump on the bottom of the phone.
I doubt we’ll be seeing thinner phones any time soon—with the amount of hardware (advanced cameras, large [always-on for Pro] displays, ever-evolving A-series chips) inside, the need to be able to pack a sizable battery in there outweighs the desire for it to be thinner.

on a more opinion-based note, frankly, I would rather iPhones stay their current thickness. I think the thinnest-lightest wave has come and gone with Ive’s departure, and I’m fine with that. I need something to actually grip onto especially with my tiny a** hands 😆
