That article was written for Parallels 7. You need to check if there were any relevant changes in Parallels 8.

Yes, sorry. I forgot to mention that I had read about Parallels 8. It looks like as of October, 2012 the limit has been increased to 16GB for a single virtual session. Though, apparently Parallels still warns against it.

http://apple.stackexchange.com/ques...s-parallels-8-recommend-max-4-gb-ram-for-a-vm

YES!!! "Happy days are here again..."

It has taken quite some time to get Apple to be reasonable about the virtualization of Snow Leopard (in spite of the fact that the Snow Leopard EULA does not prohibit its virtualization in Lion or Mt. Lion on a Mac).

I believe that my efforts to help everyday users be able to virtualize Snow Leopard in Parallels (and others who extended this information to VMWare Fusion) finally convinced Apple to let down the barriers, and they chose to do so with this 95% reduction in price of Snow Leopard Server.

My next project will be to develop instructions on how to "remove" the Server functions of Snow Leopard Server, so that it will be able to operate without the overhead needed by the "server" functionality and "look and feel" just like Snow Leopard client. I am waiting for my copy of SLS to arrive this week :D

Awesome! Although, do you think that SLS will look/feel so differently that I will have a hard time running Pro Tools 8 LE in it?

Either way, I look forward to your next thread on removing the overhead from SLS, and I greatly thank you for all of the work that you have done on this one. I agree that threads, like the one you have created here, not only help us end users, but also helps get the word out to the developers and companies. So thank you, thank you, and thank you! :)

SNOW LEOPARD SERVER just arrived! Apple Part Number: MC588Z/A

It will take me a day or two to have the time to install it, but I do not think it will look that substantively different. I am just miffed about the overhead, which also may not be a real issue either! :)

I "took a victory lap" over on the Apple Support Forums (where my original instruction set was posted before I realized that their forum does not allow later editing and moved it over here).

They promptly deleted it with the admonition:

"Apple removed your post titled "Snow Leopard Server now for sale by Apple for $19.99!" because it contained the following:

"Discussion of Apple Policies, Procedures or Decisions"

You can bitch about The King, but not on The King's forum, it seems... :D

Snow Leopard Server installed into Parallels

Adobe CS2, now downloadable from Adobe for free, running in Snow Leopard Server in Parallels on my Lion Mac Mini:

There seems to be little, if any, overhead slow down, due to Snow Leopard being run in Server version; and, as seen here below, has the same look and feel as Snow Leopard client.

i just ordered another copy of SLS for trans-shipping to Italy.

Anyone else outside of the USA need some help with SLS?

:)

I'd like a copy of SLS! Testing my app on 10.6 is quite a chore since I always have to build new version on 10.8, then reboot to 10.6.

Please report your success with this installation and:

Tell us which PowerPC apps you use!

I managed to get my non-server Snow Leopard to work by following the instructions. I edited the CDR file by rebooting into 10.6.

I'm so happy I finally have 10.6 running in a VM. I'm a software developer, and I need to test my app to make sure it works on old versions of Mac OS (there are still people using 10.6 as their main OS)

The last two days I was tracking down a pretty nasty bug that caused my app to crash on 64bit Macs running 10.6. Since I can compile only on 10.8, I needed to constantly reboot my Mac. Having SL in a VM makes this so much easier...

Hi,

Thanks for the instructions! really handy.

I am struggling to get the VM to boot (both Parallels 7 & 8) from my SuperDrive-Server.cdr image

I have verified that the ServerVersion.plist file has in fact been created.

when i select CD/DVD from the boot menu, all it says is:

Trying to boot from CD/DVD.................failed

I dont know what else to do, i have tried countless things to get it working.

Please help

Thanks :D

Hi Michael. I have installed SL sever on Parallels 8 to run CS2 and other Creative Suite programs, but they are not running smoothly. For one, the icon disappears a lot in Illustrator, but a more pressing problem is that I cannot make curved lines in CS2. I wonder if something with the installation went awry. In any case it is very disheartening. Any insight is appreciated.

Once SL is installed, you do NOT want to boot anymore from the original DVD image and it should be ejected.

Go back and study STEP ONE and be sure you ejected it where mentioned and try it again and report back.

On the other hand, if you purchase SLS for $19.99 + sales tax & shipping, installation will be a breeze and you will avoid all of the pitfalls of using SL client instead of SLS.

Did you install Parallels Tools?

I am only a minor user of CS2 and mostly Photoshop at that.

Can you point me to an online tutorial that might replicate your problems and I will attempt to duplicate them on my end and see what is going on?

Also, since you have installed SLS, you should not hesitate to ask for help on the Parallels Support Forum. There many others will have posted problems and maybe this has occurred to others, too.

Sorry i think i didnt explain properly.

I cant boot into the installer, hence there is no OS on parallels...

I know that once its installed, you no longer boot from cd

EDIT - I also have a copy of SLS. Are the steps the same? Cause with the image as i have it now (original), i still have the same issue as above

No, SLS is much easier to install. Just follow Parallels' instructions.

Still having no luck.

Does the format have to be .cdr or can it be .dmg? All my image files are .dmg files

If you are installing Snow Leopard Server, you just insert the disc; no files needed.

UPDATE: Rereading your earlier post suggests that you obtained your copy of SLS through less than authorized means. While this may save you the $19.99 that the Apple Store charges for it, I am not willing to put my time into helping you with this endeavor (which I value at some amount greater than $19.99).

Buy a legitimate copy of SLS and install it into Parallels as instructed by them.

SLS on Parallels 7/8 "Plug and Play" ?

Michael, have you gotten your copy of SLS yet to try this?

I'm trying to install SLS in either Parallels 7 or 8 (the issue is the same for both). I'm installing on a MBP Retina that does not have a Superdrive, so I am using an external usb DVDROM drive.

Parallels does not recognize the drive attached via USB, so I made an image (.dmg) of the SLS install. Parallels does recognize this and brings me to what appears to be the "start" for the install process inside the Parallels environment. ("Click to start")

However, once I do click, an error message immediately pops up which halts the install. ("Error Message")

This happens with both Snow Leopard and Snow Leopard Server on both Parallels 7 and Parallels 8.

Any thoughts?

Matt:

I own the 2011 Mac Mini with no internal optical drive. I had previously purchased a third party USB DVD burner so I could burn DL DVDs and it works perfectly with my Mac Mini.

Yes, I have received my copy of SLS, and as noted in a post above it installs perfectly for me in Parallels 7 using the SLS disc. I have Parallels 8 on order.

Check out and/or post your problem on the Parallels Support Forum for Mac OS X Guest installs and I am sure they must have a solution for the rMBP and come back and let us know how they fix it!

PS: Why does your screenshot say Leopard and not Snow Leopard?

disappearing mouse problems

For those of you experiencing the "disappearing mouse problem" which apparently happens even outside of Parallels, try this tip:

Download and install Pinpoint.

Let us know if this solves the problem for you!

THANK YOU: Carter!

Hi Michael! Ever so grateful for these posts!! Much appreciated.
Just wondering if you have received and loaded Parallels 8, and if everything works fine with the SLS install?
I have ordered SLS...and am about to order Parallels 8...just want to make sure everything works with that install?

Cheers!

I upgraded my Snow Leopard client to Parallels 8 and I installed Snow Leopard Server into Parallels 8 and it works fine!

I tried this on my MacBook Air 2012 model but it's not locating the hard drive and so not installing. I'm in Mountain Lion and Parallels. Could the reason it doesn't work be due to me using an existing grey retail disk I own from my other MacBook [a 2009 white MacBook] and not a retail version of Snow Leopard.

Can someone confirm that before I go and spend money on a retail version and find I hit the same problem. Thanks.

My MacBook, which I may also install it on, will be fine because that has an optical DVD drive to read off. If I install it on that, I can leave it set up with my Epson GT15000 scanner.

The problem with buying slightly older hardware second hand is that companies stop supporting it on the Mac far sooner than they do on Windows based machines. However a brand new A3 Epson scanner is £1000 so I'll stick to second hand and making do. GT-15000 is a very good scanner in my opinion but only worth buying if you scan items larger than A4.

Yes: That is the reason. Perhaps the photos attached to the first thread showing the grey discs with the word NO was not clear enough.

Also, purchasing a new, fresh copy of Snow Leopard avoids licensing issues involving your old Snow Leopard being used on your MacBook already as its EULA requires a second copy. I would prefer you spend the extra $19.99 + sales tax & shipping over the value of my time that it takes to remind you of that fact!

Lastly, as noted in the first thread: Apple now sells Snow Leopard Server for the same price, and it is much easier to install into Parallels and maintain.

Since you are outside of the USA or Canada, they may not sell it to you. I recently purchased a copy and sent it to Italy for a similarly situated user and that brought the price up to about $60 (including original sales tax and shipping) and took from March 12 to March 30 for it to arrive using International Priority Mail.

If you attempt to purchase SLS from Apple, please report the result of your attempts.
