The installation hung the first time. I think the other old ppc DVD is dirty and was having a hard time reading the SLS disk. I really need to get to blowing out my drives and running the cleaning brushes to clean the heads. Long overdue.

It took a couple of hours to install, but indeed it did install relatively easily after I used Caffeine and power settings to keep the machines awake.

The sound was missing so I installed the parallels tools and all is well.

I updated and now I have a fine Snow Leopard Server in a virtual box.
I am really happy with the Snow Leopard Server edition. Lots of tools to play with... kind of like having the power of Linux at my fingertips. Can't wait to try it out.

Right now I am going to busy migrating my SL installation from my upstairs machine into the VM. Then I can go ahead and install ML on that box.

I just installed directly from the 'remote disk' on ML by sharing my old ppc DVD Combo drive.
No image .dmg or .cdr needed.
No terminal commands.

Snow Leopard Server DVD strait up installs. Nothing easier other than my struggle with bad or dirty drives.

Post install I ran the 'parallels tools' so Sound would work.

Rosetta seems to be already installed. I tested it with my old Starcraft game.
My Snow Leopard Server DVD comes as 10.6.3.
I updated it fully to 10.6.8 before migrating other software from my SL machine upstairs.

Open GL not supported by SLS???

I haven't read about it extensively, but my open GL software seems to be not working.

Adobe After Effects justs hangs.
Quake 3 doesn't initialize.
Myth: the fallen lords doesn't work

Anyone else had issues with open GL and if so, is there a work around????

An Odd thing keeps happening.

If I leave the VM on for a while a big black box with white writing in several languages comes up telling me:

"You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again."

If I hold down the power button on my machines list it merely suspends the machine with the black box still there.

Why does it do this and how do I get out of it the right way. Right now I have been just 'resetting' the machine. But I hate the idea of going away for a bit only to find that I need to restart everything.

Any ideas or experiences with this would be great. Thaks

No sound

Hi Michael.
Thank you again for your great support, but I found the error.
I had 10.6.0 installed and there was no sound with this version. After I downloaded the 10.6.6 combo update, the AC3 sound driver suddenly appeared and now I have a working 10.6.6 version with sound and everything.
I also upgraded to the latest version 10.6.8 and everything seems to work.
What is not working though is the application I need to run under snow leopard which is an EA game (Lord of the Rings the return of the king). I can install the DVD and the game starts, asking for resolution (I tried out all options) and the screen is than resizing in an endless loop. (It tries to change resolution I believe).
Anyway. Thank you for bringing Snow Leopard to Parallels 8 on Mountain Lion.

Hi.

I have the new iMac with ML and want to run SL on it.

touch "/Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Library/CoreServices/ServerVersion.plist" or touch '/Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Library/CoreServices/ServerVersion.plist' These lines don't work with me.

Using vmware.

Do I really need to buy the SLS?

I have no experience with SL on VMWare; but for $20 SLS is much easier to install and more stable to operate! Get it BEFORE Apple decides to stop selling it - it used to sell for $499+!

That is correct: it is only sold by telephone in the USA & Canada.

I recently facilitated a purchase to Italy. It added about $35 for the additional shipping costs.

Not sure I understand the question:

My original thread makes Parallels think that the SL client DVD is a SLS, so that it will install into Parallels, but that also creates some startup and shutdown functions to have to deal with that conversion (a process that can ultimately fail under certain circumstances and hence is less stable than installing real SLS into Parallels).

You cannot transform a client SL DVD into a SLS DVD.

yeah that's it. I'll use SL in a VM.

So, how can I convert a SL to SLS?

Is it with this line in terminal?
touch '/Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Library/CoreServices/ServerVersion.plist'

Follow the instructions in the first post in this thread. If does not "covert" SL to SLS; but it makes Parallels think that the SL Install DVD is an SLS Install DVD for the purposes of installation into Parallels.

Hi.

It still says that mac os x is not a server edition.

I wrote this line in terminal
touch '/Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Library/CoreServices/ServerVersion.plist'
after enter the line above in terminal, it says:
touch: /Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Library/CoreServices/ServerVersion.plist: Read-only file system.

Help with display resolution

Hi, I just loaded Snow Leopard 10.6.3 into Parallels 8 on my new Mac Mini (Mountain Lion 10.8.1) - thanks for the easy to follow instructions. When I'm in my Parallels Desktop the screen display has a resolution of just 1024x768. When I click on Displays in System Preferences there is no option for me to change the resolution - it only offers me 1024x768. I'm working on an Apple Cinema HD monitor with 1920x1200 reolution. How can I get Snow Leopard to recognize my monitor or at least to offer me other resolution options to choose from.

Thanks for your help.

Hi, Clive here again. Now I cannot load Snow Leopard on Parallels. When I try to access it I get an error message that says "An invalid Mac OS version is installed. Mac OS X virtual machines can only have the Mac OS X Server Leopard or Mac OS X Server Snow Leopard operating system installed. Other versions of Mac OS are not supported". It was working fine for 1 day!, but not now.

Please help.

Thanks

I hit the Suspend option in parallels - oops. And I didn't make a back-up copy of my Snow leopard pvm file. Any hope for me? Do I need to start again.

I didn't get far with the troubleshooting steps so I started all over again. My Snow Leopard is now working fine on Parallels 8 - and I've backed up the pvm file.

I am still unable to resize my display in System Preferences. I'm only offered 1024x768. Any ideas how I can get Snow Leopard to offer me other resolutions?

Thanks again

Clive

7. Add the important file to the mounted image with this (including the quotation marks):

touch '/Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Library/CoreServices/ServerVersion.plist'

8. Unmount the disk image by ‘ejecting’ the ‘Mac OS X Install DVD’ in Finder. At this point you have two files - SuperDrive.cdr and SuperDrive.cdr.shadow on the Desktop.

that is not working for me.

kernal problem

Hi, I have followed your instructions up until the actual installation as I am stuck at the screen saying 'Mac OS x Install DVD' it then runs down and goes to a screen telling me to reboot my computer(picture included, sorry for rubbish screen shot). I don't know how to fix this problem. Please do help, thanks in advance! Alice
