I have attached the external drive to my MacBookPro15,1 running Sonoma.
Disabled indexing sudo mdutil -i off /
Unmounted manually the partition and Installed Window 7 in MBR mode.
Enabled indexing sudo mdutil -i on /
As you noticed, I left the option to install on a hybrid and MBR from a system higher than MacOS 12, but your bootloader is saved in /Users/mbp151/Desktop/Legacy boot for Windows (disk6s1). Then manually copy to the Windows disk using third-party programs.

Aha so for anything higher than Monterey manual intervention is needed to copy the boot loader to the system disk?
So in theory one could create an allinone Windows? UEFI+MBR boot?

Monterey is the last system with the ability to use its own ntfs driver. On the other hand, the average user with a Sonoma system will install the second Windows UEFI system.

Windows 7 can't fix the problem using this method?
It can. I just said it did not need disabling automount. It only needed manual unmount. But it will not hurt to disable automount.
As far as NTFS write in Sonoma:
Code:
brew tap gromgit/homebrew-fuse
brew install ntfs-3g-mac
pip3 install ezntfs
sudo ezntfs-app install

Test version 6.1.6

Screenshot 2024-06-08 at 02.31.22.png
What I added and corrected:

version 6.1.6
1. Added disabling auto-mounting for external drives
2. Minor fixes
version 6.1.5
1. Installing Windows on MBR (format the disk only exFat)
2. Deactivate Windows ESP for Windows UEFI (also works for restoring bootloader EFI partition)
3. When installing Windows UEFI, if the drive is hybrid, it is converted to GTP
4. Checking the disk for disconnection
5. Eliminating random BCD error
Do not forget that this is testing, there should not be any valuable information on the disk.

I tested three options on a second generation Intel PC - «Install Windows UEFI» (GTP), «Install Windows legacy boot» (GTP+ MBR) and «Install Windows legacy boot» (MBR). Installed Windows 7, Windows 10, Windows 11.
Before installing a new version, it is advisable to completely remove the old one.

Hi,

I've been following this thread with interest, I'd be happy to do some testing for you if you like? I want to install Windows 7 or 10 anyway and this might be easier.

I can use a Mac Pro 5,1 or 3,1.

The 5,1 will run native Mojave or High Sierra, the 3,1 El Capitan.

I have spare SSDs and HDDs for any installing both internal SATA and a USB.

All the Best
Dave

Hi.
I will be glad if you help.

Ok, what would be the best Platform, Mac Pro 3,1 El Capitan or Mac Pro 5,1 Mojave? The 5,1 has the latest firmware.

I assume that I have to run Natively, not with Open Core?

I have Windows 7 and 10 ISO files.

If I install Windows on the 5,1 can I move the disk over to the 3,1 and use it on that machine?

At your discretion. But the minimum version is High Sierra.
Yes, that's what I thought, so it will have to be the 5,1 then.

It will take me a while to get the 5,1 setup with all the correct files. I'm going to remove the OC/Monterey disk and reboot with Native Mojave.

I plan on installing it to a whole disk drive, e.g. no MacOS partition. Is this ok or do I have to make a Mac and Windows partition on a new HDD first?

(Windows Install 6.1.6):

Tried Windows 10 Enterprise with a freshly formatted MBR SSD, 1 partition ExFat

Installation run thru but the disk was not bootable, not with Apple Boot Picker, not with OpenCore.

Sadly I was too silly to save the log. Is the log stored somewhere else?

Did exactly the same again, including formatting. This time used no_automount and it generated a bootable Windows. And this time I stored a log, can add it later, the box is busy proceeding Windows setup.

So it looks like no autoremount should be applied to all drives internal and external.
