I think we’ll see 14.2 on Tuesday with a lot of iPhone 12 code.
From what I’ve read, the iPhones 12 that are currently in boxes on pallets waiting, they’ve got 14.1 on them, which is based off a build of iOS 14 from before the 14GM even. They’ll need an update to get up to par with current devices.

We won’t see 14.2 until the iPhone 12 Mini & the iPhone 12 Pro Max are in our hands, and that’s looking like sometime in mid-November. More likely we’ll go straight to 14.1.1 from 14.0.1, or that Apple can roll in fixes and stuff from 14.0.1 & 14.2b2 into an updated 14.1 next week, and then release a 14.1.1 after preorders this coming Friday, likely the 20th or the 21st. So it’ll be ready by the 23rd when the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro are delivered.

That is making my head spin!

Totally! But it’s still (in theory) better than last year! Unless you’re already on the 14.2 betas, then you’re still looking at setting up a new phone, installing the beta profile and updating OTA, and THEN restoring from your 14.2 backup. And that’s as long as they release a beta profile for the new iPhones. Wasn’t there a couple day delay for the 13 beta needed last year for the iPhone 11 Pro Max?

I remember that's only 1 day delay. But for those who got their iPhones first day and are on beta, You will have to wait.

I hope this doesn’t create an upgrade problem. My 11 pro is on 14.2 beta, if 12 comes with 14.1 version, I have to set It up as new phone, install beta then wipe it and set it up with back up. Possible but a pain.

Oh well such is the life of a beta user.

sorry while I was writing this several posts saying same thing appeared

Yeah, this is exactly what happened last year. 14.2 will not be released before 14.1

You're on 11.2 Beta??? 12 is going to come with 14.x not 12.1

14.1 will be a newer build than 14.0.1
Apple abides by semantic versioning for their releases.

Does this mean 14.1 is unlikely tomorrow because 7.1 would be with it

I would expect 14.1, if it's coming out for any devices other than the new 12's, will come out next Wednesday/Thursday before the new devices are released (may even be 14.1.1 as maybe that version will be needed to be released for the 12's).

I'm expecting 14.2 Beta 3 to come tomorrow or Wednesday.

Please note this article from Macrumors back on Sept 21st:

The most likely reason for Apple skipping over iOS 14.1 in its developer and public beta testing is that the version is destined to ship on the iPhone 12 lineup, which looks as though it will begin shipping in October. iOS 14.1 has likely already been locked down and is being provided to Apple's manufacturing partners for installation on the new iPhones as they are being produced.

Yes, the build number will be higher in iOS 14.1 than it currently is in iOS 14.0.1, but the content of that rather old build built specifically for the iPhones 12 probably means whatever fixes/updates in place for iOS 14.2 will be rolled into a 14.1 build for the rest of the phones and then a quick 14.1.1 release for all to update the iPhones 12 to bring them up to date. Then testing can continue on in 14.2

To be fair, it's a minor update, and was probably pre-scheduled for release today.
While that's quite possibly the case it still pretty much shows that Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples Day is basically not a (company) holiday that has an effect on releases.

I’m not sure about you, but the battery drain issue for me was pretty bad. I’m used to going at least a full day without having to charge midway then the day. If this fixes the battery drain issues, that’s actually a very big update for me :)

Yea, I was more making a point that it wasn't a day they would consider doing any major releases, it was something they had ready to go and were confident enough in it, that they probably. set it up on Friday to automatically populate today.

It didn't affect everyone, and it was the only real thing in the update, therefore it's minor compared to other releases. :)
