potentially buggy beta and probably inferior battery life...a stable final release!

I don't care what bugs there are on the latest beta, and I don't care even if you say they're flawless. I'm not using them.

Not wanting to use betas because of bugs and stability...but not caring about bugs on the latest beta or its stability. ?

Disclaimer: I don't think it's better or worse to use/not use betas, and am not advocating for either. In the same way, I don’t think that it’s a given that a beta is less stable and/or the cause of worse battery life than the “stable” releases in every case…because there’s big overlap in the development cycle!

As far as what releases are called: “betas”and eventual “stable releases” can and do share identical build numbers, so the terms are literally interchangeable.

I second this view.
Practically the difference between a usable beta and a stable release is meaningful only during the initial releases of a major new version of iOS - for example beta of iOS 14.0 will be worse than the stable public release of a previous version of 13.x.
In later versions of the same major release- like 14.2, there is hardly any difference between the public release and a beta. The beta of 14.3 will be similar to public release of 14.2.

Sure, the difference might be negligible or nonexistent, even. But that wasn’t the point. I was putting into perspective why some people might not want to install a beta on their devices, but they may want to follow what’s going on with releases or features. But that doesn’t mean someone who’s using a beta will outright condescend someone who’s not. You have to respect other people’s opinions, and not be patronizing for no good reason.

I admit that post was a little on the condescending side and I apologize for that, but @Silverstring and @uandme72 explained it perfectly. All I was trying to say is that there's a better version of the OS available and the fact that it's a beta shouldn't be a deterrent to those suffering from issues on a release version.

Being able to use FaceID with a mask on alone is worth upgrading. Getting rid of stuttering when closing apps and green tint at low brightness are secondary perks for me.

These are valid facts, and you could’ve been more direct and respectful while saying it. Hell, you could even convince me to install a beta by stating it the way you did now.

I’ll definitely be a little more mindful of how/what I post when I’ve had a rough day.

Anyway, sorry for massively derailing this thread. What’s everybody thinking for releases moving forward? Continuing biweekly or moving to a weekly cycle?

With March not that far away I reckon weekly betas.

It's all good man, happens to the best of us.

Hoping for a weekly beta cycle, especially with the green tint bug reportedly fixed on the 12 series.
There can also be an iOS 14.4.1 with the said green tint and stutter issue fixed. I feel like there haven't been as many x.x.x updates this year, and in the past, a lot of iOS 14 releases would've come out as a 14.x.x update, and 14.5 would've been something like 14.2 or 14.3..

P.S. Personally, I'm hoping for a beta 3, as I've jumped onto the public beta bandwagon as well :p

HomePod is the real mystery .. seems the first beta of 14.5 (which I installed and which mostly works without issue other than ambient sounds refusing to play for more than thirty seconds) was pulled

Do those on the betas restore once the final version is released or just delete the beta profile if you want to get off the beta train?

Gotta say that wouldn’t bother me but with the state of beta 2 being so good, I’d also be okay with waiting a little longer. I’m just praying we don’t regress.

Good to hear. This community rocks and I never want to burn bridges. How’s beta 2 treating you?

Just delete the profile. The last beta (RC these days) tends to be the official release more often than not so you can stick with that. I did this with the last 14.4 beta and planned on jumping off the train for a while but the unlock with watch thing pulled me back in.

I’ve always preferred the developer beta profile as you get to ride that excitement right when it drops versus waiting hours/days for the public beta. The profiles are so easy to find it’s no trouble jumping on/off as you please. Just make sure to always have an archived backup and you’re golden.

Seems fine so far. I never had the green tint bug on my 12 Pro Max, so I can't say whether or not its been fixed, but the Apple Watch unlock feature is definitely amazing. I wish it would work with the wifi turned off though. I'm kinda worried about the battery life. Since you've been using it for a while now, would you say its any better or worse than 14.4?

Other than a Bluetooth issue with my AirPods and pioneer head unit it’s been good for me. The head unit thing may be down to that hardware as it’s happened in several versions, beta and public release, over the years.

The watch unlock feature has improved in beta 2 but still isn’t 100%. I’d give it an 80/20 success rate now that it’s been a few days.

I just delete the profile. I am usually on betas, though, year round except for the first several betas that are released after I get a new phone, as I want to enjoy it in its “pristine” state for a bit after purchase.

Back to speculating: I think we wait a week for beta 3 and then its weekly thereafter (prob 3,4 and 5) and then release.

Sine it’s normally an extra week between beta 1 and 2 and then weekly starting with 3 I would anticipate beta 3 this week.

What!!! 3 more weeks till the mark zuckerberg update drops

It’ll coincide with whatever event (iPads and more M1 Macs, most likely) Apple puts on in March. That’s usually at the end of the month, so I’d say 3-4 weeks sounds about right.

New gen wifi/bluetooth, you don't have to worry it draining battery while idle

Yeah, I’m getting about the same battery life, if not a little better than 14.4. The only issue I’m facing is the phone sometimes unlocks when I don’t want it to (while I’m wearing a mask and my Apple Watch). Well worth the trade off tho, when you consider the alternative.

I agree.
We all are speculating or presuming.
How it is interpreted, varies with the reader. No one can claim to police the views within the limits of decency.
LOL so your "guess or speculation" 5 min BEFORE the typical release time is a horrible guess then. Its well known that typical release times are 1:00pm et and 4:00pm et so a guess or speculation at 12:55 that "nothing today " just really makes no since. Perhaps a more appropriate one would be at maybe 1:15 after nothing happened at 1:00. But certainly you are free to post whatever you want just makes you look sorta clueless that you aren't even aware of typical release times. Just sayin.

you have already vindicated and acknowledged my awareness when you say I am posting “5 minutes” before the typical release time.

Just have a look at the sitter off posts people make throughout the week, leave alone at the “release times”, and you will realise everyone is equally clueless. Those who silent cannot and do not claim to be knowing either.

do you personally claim to have the beta release button in your command, that you can be sure when it will be released?

That’s the reason it’s called speculation thread.
