I'm not on twitter, but I guess the only way Apple would do the watches & iPads via a press release would be if there's no real changes other than battery life, surely? If all the rumours about the new iPad Air being more like the Pros in design, then I am not totally convinced those would be via press release.

If what Jon is saying is right, then that means Apple would release 13.7 this week and 14 next week, which just doesn't make sense...... Unless he means they get announced the week of the 7th? He's not specific about whether he means they are announced or released, unlike with the phones.
I'm thinking announcement next week and then they ship the following week. That allows for another 1 or 2 betas plus a GM for both iOS 14 and watchOS 7, with those being released the week beginning the 14th. I would imagine there will be a day one update for watchOS to 7.0.1 or something along those lines as they'll have an older build on them when they ship.

This means iOS 13.7 would have a couple of weeks in the wild before iOS 14, and as it is a big feature relating to Exposure Notifications, Apple probably want it out sooner rather than later to help in the contact tracing effort.

Going by past data, we are again looking at Tues or Weds this week potentially.

iOS 12 beta 6 lasted 7 days

iOS 13 beta 6 lasted 8 days

It all comes down to when 13.7 comes 😁 If it comes today, or Wednesday (as won’t come tomorrow, as they rarely, if ever, release a point release and a new Dev Beta for the next release on the same day), then we know that it’s a minimum of 2 weeks before iOS 14 officially will be released.

What people seem to forget regarding GMs is the fact that new devices have to be flashed in the factories. Now we know that Apple can flash devices really late in the production process (and while they‘re packaged too afaik) but still, they probably already sit on a GM build internally or will sit on one (for watchOS and thus probably iOS too) the first September week at the latest.

I believe last year was an outlier with the whole uncertainty about potential sanctions imposed by Trump (thus 13b8 being GM), so I think they probably have till early September to get a GM ready.

If new Watches truly ship early / mid September, the GM should theoretically be in our hands with the next 1-3 betas.

Very true. Don't forget though, that they've done point releases for new devices on launch though. ☺

They still ship with the .0 releases mostly.

Mostly yes, I was just saying there have been occasions. Due to the whole pandemic, this might be one of those situations. ☺️ I'm not saying it is, just saying it's possible.

I thought they had a way to update OTA in the box at the stores, no? I remember reading something about that.

Potentially. The devices have to ship with something though so an official build has to exist and be flashed for them once they’re out and about.

There are a lot of Apple patents floating around that talk about the various ways they can get a build onto a new device, most of it has to happen before it leaves the factory because not every device goes through an Apple Store or is ensured to go through suitable infrastructure owned by Apple again.

Rest be assured a final version has to be installed on devices being produced by a certain cutoff date (usually a few weeks before reveal / launch).

IMHO: Apple probably has a GM build already, we‘re just waiting to get it in a few weeks.

More likely a GM RC version... I highly doubt that the GM is fully set at this point... but guaranteed whatever they have is significantly ahead of what we see as DPs or betas.

Well, seeing as the watches are now rumoured for late October, takes them in line with the phones. Meaning we could still be month away from GM....

Really? Aren’t they still on track for September 7th? Where’d you see October?

Can’t see it being October, most models have slipped to one month shipping.

Front page.

As for slipping dates, COVID could easily be contributing to that.
