I set up my new iPhone from scratch every year so I should know this, but at what point in the setup process does the phone check for iOS updates? Is it before or after you’re prompted to sign into iCloud?

Just asking cause I can’t remember if it’s better to skip all the setup stuff, check for the software update and restart so that iOS is up to date before signing into iCloud and having all the iCloud settings and data start downloading to the new phone.

Most here are patient enough not to mix beta releases with public releases.* Of course you can, but I have never been impacted by a security vulnerability immediately. Some of these changes could be from months ago that are just getting implemented/patched. Hense waiting a few days for the 17.1 beta 1 is no big deal. ;)

*Assuming you are a beta tester versus a normal consumer relying on public releases/patches.
I am both a beta tester and a normal consumer. i'm on 17.0.1 as I've just updated which seems to me incredibly sensible. Apple does not push out updates for no good reason. Good luck with your "but I have never been impacted by a security vulnerability immediately". And as for "Some of these changes could be from months ago" oh dear :)

It's the truth, lots of past software vulnerabilities are months old before Apple gets around to fixing them. :)

Some zero day incidents are worked a lot faster. Also most cyber threats are avoidable with sensible computer usage practices. And for the extreme instances:

When I get the new phone , is it better to download the new update before setting in up completely ? I can't remember what I did 3 years ago when I got my 12 Pro .

Hopefully it will calm the freaking out a bit about battery health dropping, because you will see a direct correlation from cycle count to battery health. And hopefully that will mean something.

Saying that, 😆😂

Here’s a parody…
an imitation of the style of a particular writer, artist, or genre with deliberate exaggeration for comic effect.

“I’ve just installed iOS 17.2 beta 1 and my battery cycle count went from 30 to 33 on my launch day iPhone 15”

Reply User 2
“WTF Apple sort your sh*t out. It’s such a bad design all off it. I’ve still got bugs from iOS 0.1.1”

Reply User 3
“Why isn’t beta 2 out right this second to fix this as it’s effecting only all 3 of us.”

“Hi guys, have you all tried a restart?”

User 1
“All fixed”

User 2
“Thank you. Now fixed”

User 3
No reply from this user as some people just expect you to use your free time to help them and couldn't care to thank you for the help they needed.
“They really didn’t include the ability to display it as quarter-cycles, semi-cycles or octa-cycles? Pffft. The least they could do is give us a toggle. Are options really so hard, Apple?”

I’ve downgraded to iOS 17.0.1 turning off beta option because I’m experiencing lots of bug and main bug is battery drain iPhone 14 pro. P.s I can’t get a day anymore and my battery health 91% at the moment.

iOS 17.1 beta 1

Needs to be out in the field next week, Monday or Tuesday. (Dependant on holidays in the US if any)

If… they are looking for an end of October early Nov release. If that’s anything from 16.1 to go by with 5 betas and then an RC.

Weekly’s through October.
RC week of the 30th Oct.

I don’t think this is a minor security update. Any update that changes the overall release cadence is a pretty significant update.
See https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT213926

All 3 changes linked to same reporting party, effecting kernel, security, and WebKit. Was a normal delayed remediation. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited against versions of iOS before iOS 16.7. Now that’s funny because there was no iOS 16.7 beta cycle only a RC, and a release done yesterday. So now you know why they upped the version from 16.6.1 to 16.7.
