Thanks. Any downside to changing to US if toure in the uk. The clock seems to have remained the same UK time?
There may be some apps that are not available for download in the US store that you have there (such as store apps, banking etc).

My screen keeps going very dim, first time in entire iOS 18 beta cycle.

Could this have to do with heat? My iPhone is fairly warm..

It’s set to max brightness, so dim. And I’ve done five or six restarts, which fixed glitchy notifications and glitchy Siri..

PS - wouldn’t you know it? It popped again. It’s irratic, I’ve been seeing this behavior ever since the 18.1 beta update earlier today
Heat will dim the screen until temps go down.

That’s only if you change the App Store region, which you do not have to do to get Apple Intelligence.

I’m in the Uk and only changed the region & language in settings, to US and left App Store as UK, and it works fine.

I think the upshot of all this is that outside of the EU and China, it’s the language that matters not the location. And that’s due to how these large language models work.

Apple will eventually localize in many languages but not until they get the underlying schemas working properly in the language with which Apple is most familiar and is the language of its largest market.

After experimenting with iOS 18.1 for an extended period, enabled by Apple Intelligence, I found that it did not meet my requirements. Consequently, I reverted to iOS 18.0 Beta 4.

Despite the enhanced features, my iPhone consistently experienced excessive heat. My 15 PM model, which was recently purchased, has only undergone six charge cycles. I am hesitant to deplete the battery prematurely.

^^ However, I'm using Apple Intelligence on my MacBook Pro and used writing tools to correct this professionally which I am impressed.

The heating of the phone is to be expected especially so soon after install. No one outside of Apple has been able to test 18.1 for an extended period because it hasn't been out for an extended period. It's been out for a few hours; less than a day. That's definitely not 'extended'.

With all the work the phone is going to be doing to train itself in highly advanced ways on the contents of your phone (images, videos, mail, messages, and so on) I'd be surprised if it didn't take a day or two to get back to 'normal'. I just installed 18.1, and it's quite warm. It's a busy CPU and neural engine processing all the data on my phone for the AI work. If the phone didn't heat up, I would've been quite concerned that something was wrong.

Do you think anything not having A17 Pro and newer going to receive iOS 18.1 and later updates?

This is the first time I think that a new beta release is not immediately available to older iPhone models...

I'm thinking of going back to iOS 17 [even though I said I will skip iOS 17], specifically iOS 17.6, and wait for iOS 17.7 which most likely will be released alongside iOS 18.0 non-beta...

That’s not important. You don’t need to change the App Store country. It remains in the same region as your Apple ID.

I do think so. They'll probably just do it the way they do now where device specific features are updated in builds designed specifically for that device. That's why on the Developer Portal you can see that there are per-device builds. There are still the already extant iOS 18 features that will need to be updated and hopefully augmented throughout the iOS 18 lifecycle.

They will. Is not like they’re going to be stuck on iOS 18.0 forever.
This is just an early test for specific features for newer phones.
Im sure that after iOS 18.0 releases, the 18.1 Beta will be available to all iPhone models.

We are way past this. There are no assumptions, just speculations. You know as much as anyone else. You are assuming that everyone will fall in line on iOS 18.1, but Apple hasn’t officially said this. We actually don’t know how iOS 18 release will work.

Everyone here just get all the bugs out so it’s clean for us peons that don’t have AI and 18.1. 😂
this is the wrong stance to take.

apple is not going to restrict the ios 18.1 stable release to iphone 15/15 pro max. 18.1 will likely contain other changes, not just apple intelligence, so. plus they’re having two betas going to avoid unnecessary issues. if people want to use apple intelligence while it’s in early beta, they can swap over to the 18.1 beta. but if not they can stay on 18 beta. 18.1 includes the same changes as ios 18 beta 4, just with the new emoji keyboard design and apple intelligence features enabled.

i’m basing what im saying off the fact that apple did a 17.1 beta before ios 17 hit stable as well. assuming that apples going to fragment ios 18.0/18.1 across devices at stable release is incorrect.

Does anyone have specific test examples that could highlight some differences between Siri 1.0, and let’s call it Siri 1.5?

I sure do look forward to the asynchronous version of ChatGPT, that is, two-way simultaneous chat capability. Hopefully this kind of interface becomes the norm quickly in the near future

Siri is conversational now. No need to say "hey siri" for follow up questions, just talk to it and it maintains the conversation. You can even thank it and it knows to welcome you and go away.

Hey everyone. I hope your evening is going well well! Just a quick question, as I’m trying to rule out if this is a new truck issue or a bug to report. When invoking new Siri on CarPlay, does the light around the edges go around your screen fully?

Check the release notes in the first post. It’s a known bug:

  • When using Apple Intelligence, the new Siri UI might fail to render full screen on large CarPlay displays. (131586542)

Of all the things in iOS 18, the Calendar actually looks most interesting to me.

I’m not on the beta but am looking forward to not needing a third party calendar solution for the first time.

Also like the the way all emojis can be used as tapbacks - I’ll use that a lot for sure.

Being in Ireland (EU), I won’t be seeing the Ai updates but that actually feels okay to me. I don’t mind not having Ai baked into the OS as I can always get an app for specific Ai queries. I know that means losing some benefits but it just feels a little early for Ai to be so deeply integrated. I’d actually be happy enough if the EU never got it to be honest, might make for a faster, cooler iPhone. I could actually see such an occurrence really happening. Crazy days.

Apple has more advanced geolocation functionality for the EU specifically which enables sideloading. They may be using the same tech to restrict AI functionality. Changing region doesn't get around it.
The functions regarding AI and side loading are based on your model (say something like MU2R3CH/A) and its intended points of sale (serial number) I guess. People have been testing Apple Intelligence in China, where it is officially unavailable, but with a none CN(mainland)/EU model and simply switch the language to English US would get AI to pop up.

I'm UK based with a UK sim but traveling in the EU at the moment and don't have the option to enable AI (join waitlist).
kind of annoying :)

Is it just me or does this 18.1 beta feel like a bit of Frankenstein beta?
The emojis are all big again and far apart from each other in the emoji keyboard, and other bugs that were fixed came back.
It feels like 18.1 was tested separately from 18.0 for Apple Intelligence integration, but didn't get all the fixes the 18.0 beta got.
