I certainly hope that beta 6 isn't the last beta.

The experience using beta 5 on the iPhone 5s was atrocious. Battery life and performance has been really bad since beta 1.

It has gotten slightly better since beta 1, though, but certainly not iOS 8.4.1 standards.

Hoping Apple has made some dramatic improvements in beta 6 for the iPhone 5s, otherwise I'll stick to buttery-smooth 8.4.1.

iOS 9 beta release schedule:

Beta 2 - Tuesday, June 23
Beta 3 - Wednesday, July 8
Beta 4 - Tuesday, July 21
Beta 5 - Thursday, August 6
Beta 6 - ???
iOS 9 GM - Wednesday, September 9
iOS 9.0 - Friday, September 18

Based on what we know above, I think there might be a beta 6 this week, just not sure it's today.

iOS 9 public release would be Wednesday, September 16th. They release the OS the Wednesday before the iPhone launch.

But back to what I said when Beta 5 was released. I'm 99% confident there will not be a 6th beta. There wasn't for iOS 8 (only carrier partners got beta 6), and if I recall correctly, the only reason why there was a beta 6 for iOS 7 was for a last minute bug fix.

There is often an extra long gap from last beta to GM.

If beta 6 doesn't show. The 4week gap of beta 5 to GM is very typical.

edit:
http://www.thinkybits.com/blog/iOS-versions/
misnames the GM as an incremental beta number.

iOS5: beta 7 was 34 days. GM (he labels beta 8) was 8 days. Keynote GM to public release.
iOS6: beta 4 was 37 days. GM was 7 days. etc.
iOS7: beta 6 was 26 days. GM was 8 days. etc.
iOS8: beta 5 36 days. GM was 8 days, etc.

iOS 9: Will be on Beta5 for 34 days until 9/9 for GM.

I know, it just makes me sad :( We can't get any of the nice things.. Apple Pay, VoLTE, wifi calling.. At least Roam Like Home serves half my need for wifi calling (free* calls while in the US)

Rogers has VoLTE (see image.) And Canada is supposed to be getting Apple Pay this fall.

This is irrelevant. Each beta period is different and therefore the number of beta release one year cannot necessarily be used to predict the number of beta release the following year.

Fair point. The past does not predict the future. But with that being said, Apple is a creature of habit, and its the only thing to go off of.

Did anyone else notice that with iOS 7 and 8 the new wallpapers were released with the GM, but with iOS 9, beta 5 already has new wallpapers? I wonder if they're further along in the development process for iOS 9 this year..

I don't expect another beta until GM. September isn't very far anyway.

The water wave wallpaper that's been in all the previous iOS 9 betas might make a comeback. (It still uses it in the Display & Brightness > Display Zoom option. (See image))

Either it will be back or the image used in the display zoom option will change once again (since it's obviously been changed already specifically for iOS 9) to something else.

Why doesn't Apple continue the Betas up until the GM/final release? iOS 7 and iOS 8 were not really for a full public release. Maybe they would have been had there not been 4/5 week gaps between the beta and GM release

I have a feeling Apple are starting to add iOS 9 GM to the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus.

Internally, Apple are two or three builds ahead of the general public.

No more betas I don't think.

And if they aren't, they are getting close.
It's an insane logistical feat to get GM firmware loaded on how many millions of release weekend handsets? Yea.

Things like this make me wonder. What if when they were showing off iOS 9 at the dev conference they were actually using 6s and 6s+? If they look the same, how would anyone else know? The version they seem to be using looks very polished (more so than any beta I've been on). Another thing that makes me think this is how quick certain things happen like when previewing the Photos app and they scrub. All the photos load instantly. On my 6+ they are pixelated for just a moment before clearing up. Not a big deal, but it appears the phones they use are faster...

Plus, imagine what's going on in the back.
Eddy- "Guys, do you think they've noticed that we're using the 6s yet?"
Tim- "Nah, it looks the same, how would they know"
Jony- "I just wanted to make this version thinner. :("

I wonder how many computers they use for this and how many they can do at a time. I imagine a tower kinda like the ones made specifically for burning multiple CDs or DVDs that the front is covered in drives. Maybe they have a tower with 100 USB ports? Just curious.

Thing is, at any event when they show off software it always looks fluid and fast.

I'm guessing that at WWDC Apple themselves were only just thinking about putting the next iPhones into production. They were using a 6 or 6 Plus.

I want to know how they make it fluid and fast for the events. Do they have special software that is way ahead of our software? Or hardware? Both? I just wish I knew how. You say it was just a 6 or 6+, so I want to know why it works so much better than on our phones?

I would imagine they have a way of doing it OTA. Seems crazy to imagine millions upon millions of phones having to be plugged into something for firmware upload before being packaged.

I've read in several places over the years the firmware used for demonstrations at WWDC are built for precisely that. It's probably not even a fully functional build. It probably wouldn't take them long to whip up a firmware that shows new features and nothing more.

...maybe they use the device on stage to control a version running on a MAC in the background. What you see on the big screen is not the device itself they are holding but a simulator. What they have on the screen of their stage device might be a view of the simulator so they have control and less worries of processing power.
