Honestly, the average consumer only saw that commercial, and it just said, iPad, April 3rd. No mention of reserves, pre-orders, etc. Just imagine someone you know who knows nothing about computers. Saw the ad. Goes to the store. Says I want an iPad. Will Apple inform them a different one is coming in a month? That is my question.

The average consumer is not going to reserve/pre-order it. They are just going to go to the Apple Store some point between April 3rd and when the 3G version launches.

That commercial will get people talking. Ordering will start on the 12th for both models, arrival times will be explained and there will be more talk. I'm certain the distinction will be very clear on physical order forms. Over the phone orders will generate receipts which will clearly differentiate. This is how any quality company would handle this. It's not worth it to have pissed off customers complaining that they would have waited or ordered differently had they only known.

I'm not talking about online or phone orders. I am talking about people walking into Apple Stores between April 3rd and the 3G launch.

Not a basher at all. I actually enjoy, use and appreciate Apple Tech. There are those, who seemingly intelligent and full of "matter of fact" statements blindly drink from the grail of Jobs. The good news is..... there's help and an app for that.

;)

My mistake. It must be a pure coincidence that you showed up here for the first time to respond to the iPad commercial, claimed to be a happy aapl product user, and started bashing the iPad.

Not Likely

It was interesting to see the positions Apple expects users to assume when they use the device. Most involved either a folded leg or lap. Not bad positions for short periods....

I find this proposal unlikely. If the iPad was designed to potentially include a camera, as pictures of the interior frame suggest as well as hints in the SDK, then Apple has places a light sensor exactly where it would have place the camera. The light sensors on iPhone are off to the side (if I remember correctly), not directly in the center.

Do you honestly think that aapl hasn't anticipated that? Do you honestly think that aapl employees won't be instructed to make it perfectly clear that a 3G model will be available in the near future (especially since it results in a $130 bump)?

On a side note Steve looks healthy. :)

And I will definitely get that iPad of his as soon as they’ll add iSight in there.

No new functionality?!?

What are you kidding me?

I haven't seen Pages, or Keynote, or Numbers on the touch/iPhone. Sure there are some apps for office type programs for the touch but have fun with using those on a 3 INCH screen.

There is new functionality.
And the screen size is exactly what will invite and drive more.

The ipad takes what is good with the iPod touch/iPhone touch interface ( and there is a helluva lot), and opens up sooo many possibilities by giving you a larger canvas while still being portable.

This is my favorite post.
You jump all over the guy.
I am eagerly waiting your rebuttal on how much more functionality it has.
And you mention... a couple of applications?!?!??!

Sometimes it is best to think about your argument before pressing the reply button.
;)

Because people sign up to post the very second they find the site? Isn't it possible that someone can read these boards for awhile before jumping in? Or is that out of the realm of comprehension?

Would you have made the same assumption if he popped on and immediately raved how wonderful the iPad is going to be? Or only because he was negative?

I don't know. You'd be surprised. Most people know Apple stores. Do you think Apple is gonna tell people on April 3rd that a different one is coming at the end of April or are they gonna sell people the Wifi one? That's my question :)

Again, I don't think people are going to just blindly walk into an Apple Store, knowing nothing more about the iPad than what they saw in a 30 sec. ad, and say "give me one here is my CC," to which the sales associate asks "what model do you want?" and the buyer replies "I don't care, just pick one." Not likely. And if there is such a fool he deserves any frustration he has when he does discover there is a 3G model... assuming he would rather have that instead of just Wi-Fi.

And, yes, I think there will be signs in the store noting both models, and associates telling people in line that only the wi-fi version is on sale.

A salesman visited Uncle Oscar

I can see the black turtleneck sticking out!

I think he tried to convince the industry that 4:3 ratio and no Flash is the future (of the iPad). But they were not listening as they were doing an award ceremony. Sorry, but there is no multitasking with this lot!

Ignoring that the larger screen itself invites new functionality is very shortsighted. You'd have to have no vision to think there will only be a few apps that take advantage of it.

I'd also consider the file handling for the iWork apps new functionality.

Quoting something I saw here the other day, "Calling the iPad just a big iPod Touch is like calling a swimming pool just a big bathtub." The possibilities and potential are the key.

Again, I don't think people are going to just blindly walk into an Apple Store, knowing nothing more about the iPad than what they saw in a 30 sec. ad, and say "give me one here is my CC," to which the sales associate asks "what model do you want?" and the buyer replies "I don't care, just pick one." I agree. When people go to buy a computer at the Apple store, the employees don't try to sell them all Mac Pros.

I was almost blown away when I saw the iPad debut. THEN, I came to my senses. Why in the name of everything decent and honest would apple choose not to include a USB port of this device? How about Greed. You see if they included a USB port, one could use their existing data card and services to get internet access. In the book of Jobs, its necessary to dig deep into our pockets, hence, you will have to pay for what you already have again. This is deliberate my thinking friends. Oh sure, they'll come out with another model that includes the port, however, it will be hardware rev number three.

Let me count: I purchased 3 macBook Pros, Two MacPros, Three iPhones, and now I have to tithe to Steve in iPad fashion. I DON'T THINK SO.

This omission was enough for me to realize to pass on this glitter. If Steve had answered yes to tethering, I would have gone for it.

What a good shepherd Jobs is.......he looks out for his sheep in a ??????? way.

The iPad is not for you. As simple as that.

The iPad is not a computer replacement. You have to understand that. Along with other nerds and geeks here on these forums. The iPad is for someone how doesn't need computer. Someone who wants something a lot simpler. Something he can use to easily surf the web and read the books on a couch. Of course, a computer can do that. But not only is it an overkill. But it is too complicated (for non geeks) and doesn't provide the same experience.

Another paid mudslinger who only pops up here to knock it when aapl comes out with a new product.

Hmmm, when is my check coming?

I probably own more Apple products then you do.

I have about 3 ipods, Shuffle, MacBookPro, Touch and 2 iPhones.
Nothing makes me happier when Apple hits a home run.

Sadly, unlike others, I don't drink the Kool Aide and will say something when a huge letdown is happening.

I never picked up the original iPhone either. When they got their act together with Exchange support and apps, I now love it, best device ever.

Look, there is nothing wrong with the iPad but there isn't enough "magic" and "groundbreaking" for them to even bother releasing it.

Watch the Microsoft Courier's demo, that is what I was expecting from the iPad. That has some functionality besides a bigger screen Touch.

But I am also a realist and that demo looks like it was fully animated.
You never see a real hand touching the UI.

At least Apple shows the real deal, its just the real deal is boring.

;)

Really? Because if you take a look at most of the threads on here, they are written by forum members as if the iPad is a jesus device. If the iPad isn't for the nerds and geeks here on these forums (as you put it) - why are they wetting themselves over it?

Dare to be heard

Before you read my first post, I was......

I am also a staunch supporter and owner of Lexus products. I do however want Toyoto and their customers to know they have a brake problem.

On the night of the Oscars, and with the iPad commercial? Yes, that's out of the realm of comprehension. Look at all the aapl stuff he claims to have and love, before launching into his Dvorak-like blather. And yes, if someone popped up here under similar circumstances, listed the Kindle, and all the HP, Dell, Sony, Acer and msft stuff they had, but that they believed the iPad could replace some of that, I would make a similar assumption that the guy had a financial interest.

I admit that the new large screen and its tech are very impressive.
But to use an analogy like you, it's like putting a VW engine in a Ferrari.
Show me what you can do with it.
I don't want to pay $600 to read the NY Times.

At the end of the day, this device is not for me which is a shame because before the keynote, I had my wallet out ready to buy.

Still doesn't make me want one. Still makes me think it's pretty worthless.

I agree. If it doesn't fit in my pocket I might as well just carry my 13". When I'm sitting at home sippin' coffee I'd much rather browse my mail or news on my iPod. For anything more intensive or screen-hungry, the MB works just fine, perhaps better. We shall see.

It's on apple.com now.

IMO, apple made a huge mistake with the song. The song is good for an iPod commercial, but not for a device that is intended for all ages. Parents and older people will be turned off by it.

The title of this commercial is "Meet The iPad" and is only the first of many iPad TV commercials to come. It's primary purpose is to catch the attention of those who haven't even heard about the iPad yet. It's supposed to make them go "Huh? What the h*** was that ?".

I'm sure later iPad commercials will focus in on different target demographics and different uses for the iPad.

Looks like Apple is cautious to avoid the typing demonstration in the video--looks painful. They only showed the user beginning to type.

It's great with more Danish music in Apple commercials ;)

First "Around the Bend" with The Asteroids Galaxy Tour and now "There Goes My Love" with The Blue Van.

Steve Jobs got excellent music taste hehe.

As a fellow Dane I second that! :) The worlds first iPad TV commercial airing during the Oscar's and the music comes from Brønderslev! Way too cool!

It's not about the iPad. It's what developers are going to make for it, so give it some time.

This device is probably not for you but there are millions that will buy it.

I'm interested to try it. Remember, before the iPhone came out there were tons of people saying typing on a touchscreen would never work or would be an awful experience. It seems to have done alright though.

So after you first heard about the problems, which Toyota/Lexus forum did you search out and start posting about how bad Toyotas are, and how the acceleration/brake problem is just the tip of the iceberg? Did you go to the Lexus forums and warn everyone about the engine sludge? Or the weak, piece of **** transmissions on the RX300? Or the other transmission problems on the RX330? Or the faulty $1300 HID headlights?
And I'm a Lexus driver too and think they're OK, but basically overpriced Toyotas (generally higher price for same parts in different boxes) with nicer showrooms and better customer service (except at some dealerships).
