I placed mine within 5 min in the USA, still showing 5/21-5/28. Will this change to 5/21 instead?

Apple charge preauthorization on my Card right after the order. Maybe i think it was after 1 minutes of pre ordering
I did not see a preauth charge. Might depend on things like the predicted ship date, the particular card (I used the Apple Card for the 3% cash back), or who knows what else. Getting a preauth check for a charge thst isn’t going through for a month or two seems pretty useless as it will expire long before then unless they keep refreshing it, which would certainly be (at a minimum) not customer friendly. If they preauth now, there’s no guarantee the money is there 6-8 weeks from now.

It is typical to pre-auth at the start. The pre-auth does more than just see if the money is there or not. It allows them to run fraud checks like ensuring the billing information matches the card and etc.

This is why you'll see a $1 pre-auth even for free trials that require a card or when adding it to your Apple Store account even though in both cases you're not making a charge immediately and my never do so.

They'll charge again before shipping.

If you didn't get a pre-auth I would be worried. Doesn't mean there is a problem, but it could mean they had issues with the card or data so keep your eyes open.

Whether they charge immediately or not also seems to depend on who made the device. If it’s Apple they seem to charge when shipping. However, I just ordered the Logitec combo touch keyboard/case for the 5th Gen 12.9 iPad . This has been announced but not yet released by Logitec (on their site says “coming soon.”). Apple Storebonline is the only place I’ve found I can actually place an order. It lists as delivering 5/24–5/28, but the card was charged (not a preaut; an actual charge).

Umm.. my apologies, but I don’t understand. I believe @LogicalApex was spot on… there’s a pre-authorization to determine everything is legit. It’s one of those things… where both the recipient and sender covers all bases. Why allocate an item when finance information is sketchy?

I won’t estimate on how many Apple is manufacturing, but I would say it’s a lot… with some orders pushed a month back, they want to make orders are allocated accordingly. And then… by the recipient checking to see if the charge went through… it would establish everything is good on their end.
If they preauth now, there’s no guarantee the money is there 6-8 weeks from now.
If I’m not mistaken if the funds are not there… they will contact you. But at least your item has been allocated by the pre-authorization charge.

I was wondering whether any fellow Canadians call tell me who Apple uses to ship to addresses in Canada? This is the first time that I have preordered an Apple device, with my last iPad Pro, in 2017, purchased directly from my local Apple Store.

I understand that Apple uses UPS in the USA, but is that also the case in Canada, or would they use one of the Canadian couriers, such as Purolator or CanPar?

Also, is any tracking information available when it leaves China, or only after it reaches Canada? It’s standard shipping, and I was curious as to how long it takes to get from China to Canada, if it’s by ground. I’m assuming roughly two weeks from when it’s actually shipped.

Usually UPS or FEDEX.

If it's coming from China like most pre orders (iPhone, etc) it will be UPS and tracking will be available from China. If it is coming from the US, it will likely be FedEx. Any iPhone that I've pre ordered coming from China has taken less than 48 hours and always delivered on launch day to BC.

Thanks, and that answers my questions. Since my shipping is “standard shipping”, I assume that it’ll be slower than your experience, but I’m glad to know that I can track it from China.

I believe the Standard vs Express shipping options involve the US leg of the product journey or "last mile" as they say in the trade. Apple products shipped from China are UPS air freighted from Shanghai to Anchorage to the Louisville UPS hub. The items clear US Customs there and then for the final legs to your hands the Standard/Express delivery options kick in. The whole process from manufacture to shipment to delivery is a really well oiled supply chain phenomenon. I read a piece in Bloomberg a while back that contrary to popular belief, the manufacturing is located in China not primarily due to lower labor costs but because the Shenzen Special Economic Zone has all the various component manufacturers and a skilled product assembly cadre in the same area allowing a unique relatively seamless supply chain.

So if I have standard shipping and live on west coast, could I possibly receive it on Thursday/Friday (5/20, 5/21) given this logic?

Yes that’s certainly possibly. Express vs standard really makes no difference on a real product launch like this. Express wasn’t an option even. It’s interesting and unusual they didn’t give an exact date for the launch outside of late May. So it’s hard to say. I’m an optimist and hoping to get mine before the 21st but not very likely.

You won't receive it before the official release date but on release date itself is possible. Before COVID, some of my preorders shipped from China and arrived at my door within 24 hours.

For the super early preorder batch, I expect those would arrive first, be warehoused in US and kept on hold to await delivery on release day.

Thanks for the clarification on the standard vs express shipping, jtptus. I wanted to quote your post, but even though I’m using the “insert quote“ feature, I can’t get it to work. I’m new to these forums, and that’s one feature I have had trouble with.

I live in Canada, so I assume that a similar situation to you, in the USA, would take place, but the airlifting would go to Toronto first rather than Louisville in your case. From Toronto, I assume that the standard shipping to my home on the East Coast kicks in then.

Mine isn’t supposed to ship until the 28th or so, so I can probably add a week or two beyond that.

Murphy's Law looms. One of my orders got hung up in Customs Clearance in Louisville (COVID, sheer volume of shipments to be cleared, sick days?) and was delayed by 48 hours. An outlier of course. Plus at this time of year weather of the tornadic variety may occur in the Louisville area and cause flight delays. Normally everything hums along. Getting my head around the International Dateline travel from China to Alaska is a challenge. The Sunday UPS flight leaves Shanghai at 0830 local time and arrives in Anchorage at 22 minutes after midnight the same day. 8 hours earlier. Magical gain of a day! How do they do that? With a smooth connection the product leaves China and arrives in Louisville the same day.

I got my order in at 5:05am PDT. Hoping I’m one of the first!

I got my order in around 9:30 ADT, on the 30th, or 5:30 PDT, and still got stuck with a delivery date between June 4-10, rather disappointing. Maybe it’s later because I live on the East Coast of Canada, and it takes longer to deliver here. I’m a bit jealous of those who managed to snag a delivery date of May 21 or shortly afterwards. I ordered the 512 Pro, 12.9”, Wifi only, btw.
