Hi,
I noticed you bought the vodafone PAYG mobile broadband sim off ebay. I'm looking to buy the same one as you for my iPad. I just wanted to ask, how does it work? How would I top it up, and does it work perfectly with the iPad 3G?
Many Thanks

Hi ddk121,

I'm posting your private message (name removed) here as others might want to weigh in on the PAYG data options for when the iPad WiFi+3G model is officially available in the UK.

RE: "How does a SIM card work": "A SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) Card works by storing information about your phone service (e.g. your phone number) so that the phone it is inserted into knows what service and account to use." (taken from WikiAnswers).

I bought the Vodafone PAYG mobile broadband SIM from an eBay seller (the exact same one listed in an earlier post by boblister). I am using it in my MiFi - I don't have an iPad 3G so I cannot offer you advise on whether it will work perfectly or not. I expect you would first have to cut the SIM to size first.... Why would you want to top up for £15 when you can have another SIM from eBay for £10? I presume you can top up using the Vodafone website or via a Vodafone store, etc, etc.

Hope this helps.

Mike

I never thought of just keep buying them at £10 a throw. Nice one.

My status hasn't changed since the 23rd April. It's an Express 24 parcel.

The last thing that happened was for me to receive a C160 customs form to which I responded via fax and email with the requested information customs asked for. It was apparently released with charges last Friday but ParcelForce can't "see" it on their tracking system yet.

EDIT: It was just released with charges, although I can't pay them until it arrives at the local depot. Anyone know how long that will take?

At last Mike. You should get it within a couple of days now. :)

When the pre-orders begin, can you choose to pick up at store via the apple website, or do you actually have to go to the store to preorder there? I'm paranoid I won't get one on launch day, so I don't want to waste time on their website when I should be heading down to the store to preorder :p

Ordered a camera connection kit off eBay last week (first time I've bought something from US). It's being delivered by USPS. Just wondering at what stage I'm likely to have to pay any customs fees? Also wondering when you think I may receive it based on the following tracking? Cheers in advance.

Well... only 6 days left for those (3 or 4) of us who slugged it out and waited for the official UK release.

Im glad to say, with the waiting time, i can now afford the 32GB 3G model, the one i really wanted. so will be standing in the 3 man long line at newcastle to get my UK iPad :D

This thread sort of trailed off to the end about international shipping and overseas (US) orders, but was still intereting to follow from time to time.

Do you think that Apple will be making accessories available for order and will ship them before the end of May?

I might join those in the line waiting, but just to pick up a case :)

I think the thread had quite a mixed community. When there wasn't much news still managed to keep it active.

I am still hoping for a 3G prob 32GB on launch day.

It's been a long wait for an Express parcel.

I'm hoping it gets to the local depot soon, or at least for tomorrow so that I can pay (over the phone?) and collect :)

Best,

Mike

I'm hoping for the sake of your sanity that it will only be a couple of days now.

Me too :\

I'm going a little crazy. I've been drifting between constant page refreshing (despite having tracking apps and a tracking widget) and the other extreme of not caring if it's delayed even longer. I do feel a bit nonplussed, like I'm not part of the original unboxing brigade but then again I expect the UK price will be on the higher side of 'unbelievable' that it's worthwhile getting one from overseas anyway if you can.

I hope so, dont know about the camera connection kit, probably still low stock in the US, but i hope everything is available from day 1

its been an interesting discussin, since there havent been any rumors on price and we have the info we want on pre-order etc. so i think its gone quite well

Even though I got a US iPad a few weeks ago I am still eagerly anticipating the price of the UK model to see how it is priced compared to what I paid.

I am still considering a 3G model, but I am waiting for the Mobile Operators to release their pricing, anybody got any thoughts on this? Similar to US?

The three mobile networks that will offer the iPad in the UK are Orange, Vodafone and O2. They all announced at the same time and used the same copy (presumably given to them from Apple). I doubt therefore that there has been much pre-planning in what the pricing is going to be.

I would have thought that it would be ethically dubious (and quite possibly, illegal) if Apple to price-fixed what the tariffs had to be over here so it seems safe to assume that each of the mobile networks will compete with each other to secure iPad business.

It's possible that they will compete by subsidising the iPad and offering it on a contract in the same way that these networks already offer netbooks (i.e. 24 monthly payments of £25) with bundled data included. I expect the price to be higher than £25/mo x 24 however..

Technically, there's a built in workflow for purchasing 'top ups' that Apple are already using the United States with AT&T. Perhaps we might get something similar over here?

Would an iPad over here from a mobile network be locked to that network or will the customer be free to pick and choose a network at will?

All the questions and we can only speculate until May 10th when everybody reveals their cards (I expect the networks will play a 'You show first' game with each other and they will announce in the days following May 10th).

Same!

I can't believe UK mobile operators aren't releasing their prices until the end of may! I would never pre order one without knowing what they want for their data!

If the preorders work the same as they did in America, you will be able to reserve on the website to pick at the store. I think that's how it will work in UK and elsewhere.

Oooh, "Sorted in hub".

I have a meeting tomorrow for work at 10am which is near my local depot. Do you think if I took proof of address and payment (VISA debit card?) what my chances are of being able to call by the depot in the morning and pay the charges & collect my iPad?

I might see if I can call them early at, say, 8am and make the payment then.
