Compare the UK and US Apple Store prices. Almost without exception, every product in Apple's lineup is priced 20% higher in the UK than in the US. No more, no less. The 20% markup is so uniform and universal that it is clearly by design. I see no reason why Apple would deviate from its UK pricing strategy for the iPad.

A 20% markup on US iPad prices would lead to:

16gb (wifi) - US$499 -> £394
32gb (wifi) - US$599 -> £474
64gb (wifi) - US$699 -> £553

16gb (3g) - US$629 -> £497
32gb (3g) - US$729 -> £576
64gb (3g) - US$829 -> £656

I would go along with those and I could live with that pricing.

I would say they'd round it up to the nearest £9 though ;) e.g. £399, £479 etc

I think I will one day get an iPad but I need to clear some debts first. It's a luxury rather than a necessity and so it goes to the back of the pile.

My two questions about the iPad are:

1) Remember the price drop from first-gen to second-gen with the Macbook Air? Will that happen with the iPad? Or is it pared down to the bone price-wise already?

2) What will the refresh cycle be? Annual like the iPod Touch and iPhone? Or further apart more like the Macbooks etc? i.e. every 18-ish months.

Update:

I'm going to have my iPad very soon! Yippie! (Never been this happy about paying charges before).

I don't think the UK mobile providers are going to be able to sell the iPad subsidised. AT&T aren't doing that in the USA: OK, the 3G one comes with an AT&T microsim in it but there's no contract and hence no subsidy. I don't see why it would be any different here: Apple are unlikely to deviate from wanting to provide an affordable data service with no contract period, as this is a major selling point of the 3G model. This would also tie in with the rumour that the delay until the end of May was prompted by the telcos demanding that the wifi-only and 3G models went on sale at the same time to avoid the wifi models cannibalising sales of the 3G ones and hence reducing their revenue. Maybe that was the price Apple had to pay to get them to agree to the data deal Apple wanted?

I'd imagine that when you buy the iPad (assuming it's from Apple) you'll be asked which provider you want to go with then given the appropriate SIM: the choice will be up to you depending on the deal you want. There might even be no SIM in it at all if you buy it from Apple, leaving you to pick one up from your chosen provider.

Why that date? Seems a bit early to me but I hope you're right.

Because it's the first friday of the "late may".
It's just a feeling and as I said it's what I hope

edit:
I hope you're right but i think the Friday of the bank holiday weekend makes a lot more sense for Apple. So my money is on the 28th.
I think it's going to be released internationally at the same day, so they won't shoot for a free day in one country.

In case anyone's interested I just received two of these:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002YCJZ9O/ref=oss_product

To help charge all the USB powered things.. MiFi, iPad, iPod, iPhone, Camera, etc...

Works just fine to charge the ipad. Now I can recharge 4 things at once but only take up one power socket, great for holidays etc.

I would check with them as the iPad can be a bit fussy on charging apparently.

So folks... What do you think about the prospect of VAT rises after the Election tho... I'm thinking those process are likely to go up a bit more to feed the deficit

well I have it charging my iPad just fine... it's rated:

1 - 5V 2000mA
2 - 5V 1000mA
3 - 5V 670mA
4 - 5V 500mA

So I guess if you plugin 4 high draw things at once it might struggle but otherwise it should be fine.

Im just so torn.

If I was to get an ipad, I would get the 32Gb Wifi model. I can expect this to cost around 500 quid. For that, I could get a really nice laptop with more memory and a hell of a lot more function.

Whats selling me on the ipad is just how sexy and futuristic it is. I really dont see myself doing long spells of wordprocessing on it.

For those of you with one, is it really that productive. I guess im going on the thought of 'I dont need one, but I dont want one'. I cant just about afford one, but I know I will feel ****** knowing the price is disproportionate to function.

I might preorder one, or I might wait until they are out and just go and try one at the apple sote.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

Got my 32GB today from eBay. All I can say is so far I am blown away with it!

Can't wait to get home and play some more.

I hope to preorder a 32gb 3G on Monday. Any clues/guesses as to what time it'll all kick off?

Thankfully, I'm off work on Monday anyway so I'll be poised!

Do you reckon they'll announce prices before pre-ordering starts? Can't remember what they did in the US, but I thought prices were announced well before the pre-order date.

They'll do it at the same time... the stores will go down and come backup with prices and allow for preordering.

I'd have thought it will all be done at once with one update of all the store websites in each country thats getting pre-order. I think the US got pre-order and pricing together too.

My iPad has now been officially lost by USPS! I am really disappointed :(

Anyone got a 16GB for sale for reasonable money?

sorry to hear that... will you get your money back?

At this point you'll be better off waiting until Monday to get the prices before buying anything, prices will likely drop once the official ones are released.
