Well it certainly is an unbelievable price... Unbelievably f**king high that is.

Safe to say it won't make much of a dent in the ebook reader market here, and I doubt it'll sell a million units fast either at that stupid price.

Though it is still cheaper than the iPhone 3GS 16GB on pay as you go.

I disagree. Go back through this thread, or any of the others about the UK prices and you'll see that in effect it's approx £20-30 higher than the US.

We have a different Tax rate that....

a) Apple can't change
b) Apple shouldn't have to absorb the cost of

I do like the comparison with the 16Gb iPhone though. Good idea.

16GB Wifi & 3G iPad = £529
16Gb iPhone 3G = £343
16Gb iPhone 3Gs = £440

(based on prices for Orange UK PAYG)

I only know 1 person here in the UK that uses an eBook reader, but (not including you guys on the forums) I already know 5 people who will definitely be buying an iPad.

Apple will announce 2 Million iPads sold pretty soon, but we must all remember when they do, just how many countries it took to sell that many.

Actual cost breakdown again + 17.5% VAT and remembering to add the now 9% additional UK/Euro Apple tax (a figure that is in nearly all the products) - breaks down like this.

$499 = £414
$599 = £496
$699 = £580

$629 = £522
$729 = £605
$829 = £688

So I was pretty close eh ;)

I've managed to crash Mail, iPod and Safari and Evernote.

Once each, except for Safari which has crashed twice.

Mike - I'm a little worried about your unit with all these crashes you're reporting. I got mine several weeks ago now and have not had anywhere near the crashes you've experienced.

Off the top of my head I've had about three or four isolated instances of apps crashing back to the home screen - roughly the same level of crashing as the apps on my iPhone. I don't remember Safari crashing once, and that's with heavy browsing through all my usual bookmarks, regularly, several times a day.

I'm not pulling the usual Internet kind of "well, I don't get that, so ha-haaa..." - just noting that your experience with these crashes is not usual with the iPad. What's everyone else's experience with this?

OMG, look at this stupid Daily Mail article:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1274638/Apple-iPad-cost-UK-does-US-stores.html

Note how neither they, nor anyone commenting realises US prices DONT include sales tax and UK prices DO include VAT. Really, appalling journalism.

  • Until the election's effect on the currency the conversion was much closer. This wont last. It's much nearer £400 before VAT
  • In the American States that I have been too, all prices were before tax at approx 7-8% rather than our 17.5%
  • Apple explained the price difference (although I have not seen this online anywhere) and they even included the explanation in the article!!!
  • It's bound to be more expensive to get a product built in China to the UK than it is to America
  • I HATE the term iTouch!!! It's iPod Touch, get it right!!
  • There is one network who have already released their data charges (Orange) so that's wrong too.
  • A list of companies that long that charge higher in the UK and you have to pick on Apple why??

And there was me thinking (or kinda hoping really) that the Daily Mail's new "Cover Flow" inspired TV Ad's were a sign that they would be the first national newspaper to have an iPaper in the App store. Now I hope they're really not.

I guess "Apple's iPad UK pricing quite reasonable" didnt make such a good headline. :p

Yeah, it's like in the Daily Express a while back

"Pet cats tortured for backache cure"

When in fact the headline should have been:

"Animal testing carried out for research into Spinal Cancer"

They can only report "It's a hung parliament !!! ..... Oh. Now what ?" atm so they have to look elsewhere to get their "ZOMG !!!!!" effect.

+1

That's the same person I bought my Voda SIM from and it's working out well so far. I only use it intermittently to provide some access on the road for my MBP (and iPhone when O2's signal dies as it so often does).

My understanding is that the Three top-up expires after 30 days. If it does not, it's a great deal. If it does expire, it's simply an average deal.

Answers:

1. Yes you can use the Vodafone PAYG data SIMs in your iPhone as long as;

a) your iphone is sim unlocked
and
b) you have set the correct APN settings in your iPhone's settings menu

2. Subsequent top-ups for Vodafone Mobile Broadband PAYG have no expiry.

I find this Vodafone PAYG mobile broadband offering to be among the most expensive data rates - BUT - in the long term if you're just looking for light use it's actually cheaper as ALL of the other mobile networks (AFAIK) expire your unused data allowance after 30 days from the date of topping up.

Hi Mike, not sure if you still monitor this thread. Did you get one of the £9.99 Vodafone sims of eBay. Mine arrived the other day but doesn't seem to work. It might be my location as coverage here is bad for Voda and no 3G. Just trying to find out if anyone who bought one from this chap confirmed it works before I make a bit of a trek to find a good signal.

for the price on a 64gb wifi-3g i could buy a ebook reader, a netbook with a 120gb hardrive and a couple of pints at the local.....hmmm what should i do. The ipad it is ;)

I still haven't received my iPad from the US, but I'm glad I did it now as the cost of a 32gb wifi + insured postage (5-7 days) comes to £470, 30 quid cheaper than the UK price... and I'll still get it two weeks earlier.

International launch of the iPad has been a supreme fail.

My son and I had a couple of pints in our local last night. Complete with two iPads running on a MIFI. Very nice sat there catching up with twitter and the forum here. Much better than the netbook we used to use or squinting at the iPhone.

Have you counted possible customs and FedEx charges? They can total up to £100 plus.

Morning folks :D

What a rollercoaster, eh? Ive read all these 200 pages over the previous weeks, people importing, not receiving for ages, delays, custom charges and our month delay etc .. But, Ive held off for the official UK release :)

So, we can preorder from Monday. Does anyone know what time this will be likely to be? When was the iPhone 2G/3G/3GS available on the website for preorder?

Also, Im hoping to be able to reserve an iPad, not pay anything and then go pay and pick up in store on the 28th. Is that how its going to happen?

Also, if preordered, I guess its not guaranteed that you will get one from a particular store if you do not queue early? Or can you specify a pickup branch and they reserve you one for whenever you get there?

Roll on 2 weeks Friday :D:D:D

I'm curious to know the answers to all these questions too ;)

Me thinks you may not have read ALL of the pages. It's looking like a 10am start for Pre-Orders. As before if you have registered on the Apple.com/uk/iPad/notify page then you will receive an email as soon as you can start the Pre-Order process.

Historically with Apple this has been the case. A few of us have contacted our local Apple Stores, and the Apple Sales line but we are getting different reports. Although we do believe this to be likely. I'll be at my local store at 9am on Monday (they're opening early) and will post here when I have a definitive answer. Also with the US launch, when a Pre-Order was taken Apple "held" the amount on your Credit Card, but charged you fully when it was ready to ship, or was picked up from the store.

It will be more likely than if you don't :D
If you definitely want one (and are available on or near launch day, 28th May) then I say go for it.
Get the contact number for your local Apple Store from the site below and give them a call and see what they say.

Roll on 2 weeks Friday indeed :D
