On calling UPS once again, they still do not have the required paperwork necessary to ship these Ipads to the US and they are in a HOLD pattern until they receive the required documents. UPS says now that if they do not get the documents by today this could delay it even longer than April 5th..

I was calling because there is a message on the tracking area that states EXCEPTION LOUISVILLE KY and I wanted to know what that meant and if it was going to be delayed. UPS says one thing and Apple says another at this point.

The same thing happened with the iPhone 3GS... they were all going to deliver early, and apple put a hold on them, and just like "shipping info" is coming out today, people's orders started getting the "exception" in Louisville. Not to worry, we'll be all set come Saturday... This is the 4th lauch product I've bought from Apple that has shipped via UPS from China.

We need to see some proof. Show us your exception language, please. Otherwise, it's coming off like FUD.

I can't imagine any scenario in which Apple, which ships millions of products from China, has overlooked some nebulous "paperwork" that would derail their biggest positive PR event in 2010. Proof, please.

You had better call Apple and let them know.

Better yet email SJ. I'm sure he will fax over the info

I have to laugh at this point--I ordered within two minutes of launch and I still have no tracking #. So much for my lightning-fast order skills.

I ordered a 32GB at 8:31 on the 12th and I got my tracking number at 6am today. Maybe it's by name? Or Apple account number?

As for your friend, I was worried 'cause I used a $500 pre-paid visa and the rest of the ballance on a regular card, but I didn't know if the $1 pre-auth was going to eff up the $500 limit on the pre-paid. Looks like I'm in the clear.

I'm sure Apple will do everything possible to get orders out, so your firend may want to call 'em.

Apple said it will deliver by/on April 3. As long as you get Saturday delivery, you'll get it the third.

There is no delivery exception listed on my tracking information. Could you post a screen-shot of yours?

did just that and they told me not to worry...they are holding the shipment so it wont arrive too early..I tend to believe the good people at Apple before I believe the UPS agents....dont think Apple would delay this whole thing...

Thank you. But is this the result of Apple's order to hold all deliveries until 4/3, even if they should arrive state-side before Saturday? I'm genuinely asking since I don't know. My tracking shows no new activity since the origin scan in SHENZHEN.

That sounds more likely to me. :)

my tracking scan was at 3:01 am this morning and this was the most up to date info I have received..I think this might be the case..

Just got my email!

I had just obsessively checked the status on Apple's order page and it was still showing prepared for shipment (it's been in this state for 2 days). 2 minutes later I get the shipping email! Woohooo!

64GB WiFi, ordered 3/12 5:47am PDT to CA.

Got it, (tracking number) and sad to say it's shipping via UPS and not Fed Ex
I'm doomed and will consider myself lucky to get it Saturday sometime before 7 pm, based on multiple past experiences with UPSad delivery :(
If I had known that UPS was the poison of choice I would have reserved in the store then driven the 50 miles to pick it up myself.

Actually I hope mine does go through UPS as Federal Express in my area, comes very late like 1 pm to 5 pm. My UPS driver always gets to me like clockwork at 10:30 in the morning. Even on Saturdays. So I hope that it does come UPS. I wished that all Apple deliveries came by UPS instead of Federal Express.

Also I see that all the iPads are coming from China. Interesting. On my order, it says Prepared for Shipment Delivers on 4/3.

I ordered the 32 GB Wi-Fi version ordered on March 26, 2010. Just made it before they stated future orders will be shipped April 12th. I got it in just in time.

The exceptions are added to any delivery that they get a phone call about, to remind the UPS handlers to run over the item with various vehicles (Or throw it into the wall at various speeds) before passing it on to the next truck/plane.

Immersion into water/oil/sewage is saved for repeat offenders.

I just got off the phone with UPS to find out if my area gets delivery to my residence on Saturdays or not and she transfered me to international instead of domestic and they asked me for my tracking number and put me on hold. She came back and said barring any problems with customs I should receive my package by 10:00 a.m. on FRIDAY! So then I asked her well what if there is some sort of hold up at customs, would I then receive it on Saturday and she said "NO", it would be delivered the next BUSINESS DAY which is Monday!
I live in Southern California and my zip code is 92211 FYI.
I sure as heck hope I get it on Friday or I'll have to wait until Monday and I'll be sooooooooooooooooooooooooo upset!:eek::eek:

Yeah, that sounds close to the the conversation I had with UPS after beng transferred to International Shipping (for those who need it, the number is 800-782-7892). Only the rep I spoke with said it might be here Thursday after clearing customs (yeah, right). And she went on to say if there was a hold up in customs it could be as late as Saturday (again, yeah right)

Not surprising to me . . . my iMac shipped from China (via Fed Ex).

You were smart, I should have gone that route

I did the same thing (pre-ordered plus reserved), but I'm still annoyed to see mine hasn't shipped when I had placed my order within the first hour of pre-orders (5:50am).

I agree . . . I'd believe Apple before UPS any day :D

So here's the deal:

- I placed my order on Mar 13, 2010 at 02:37 AM PDT.
- I live in Sweden, so it's to a "forward-stuff-from-US" address.
- I used a Swedish credit card.
- The order itself went through fine. The money has been authorized on the card, but not charged.
- My current status is "Prepared for shipment".

What do you guys think my chances are? Will the order get cancelled as soon as they try to actually charge it? :( Or has it come so far now that there's no turning back? :)

This uncertainly with the shipping process is exactly why I have a delivery iPad and an in-store reservation iPad. One way or the other, I'll have mine on 4/3.

I was thinking of doing that as well but I live very far from the nearest Apple Retail store. :(
Good for you though.

Of course what we don't know is if Apple had any "hold" agreements with UPS not to deliver before 4/3 which in my case would be 4/5!

There isn't a line of people loading iPad boxes on to the plane, scanning each one, placing it on the shelf. They're stacked on palates. Verify count (X wide by X long by X tall). Scan manifest. Every single tracking number gets the "origin scan" data as a result of the manifest scan.

It's not necessary for UPS/Apple to update their computers to reflect each and every package has a hold for Saturday on it. They can blip exceptions on to the manifest. Or in many cases it's accomplished by less sophisticated means (i.e. large stickers around palate that say hold in location XYZ until date ABC and continue routing -- or even a larger tracking number and shipment tag placed on the palate as a whole).

The bulk wrap of many orders, under a single manifest, gets routed a certain way at the UPS hub such that it's held until the proper later time. Gets unpacked, single packages go on their way.

Voila -- many packages held for delayed delivery without the necessity or potential customer service hassles of flagging each and every package. As far as the end customer is concerned, the package just shows "In Transit" and it's last scan... several days later it moves on.

This also greatly simplifies the customs process for both Apple and UPS. Everything can clear under a single large shipment and later get broken up and redistributed.

And while this is a huge launch for Apple, and definitely a large shipping event for UPS, in the grand scheme of UPS's Global Logistics it's a small blip. So the phone rep you're talking to knows nothing about any special procedures Apple has arranged, unlikely knows how to look up any special handling on the whole bulk manifest, and is just reading a dumb "it takes X days from this place to that place with Y service" calculation that the computer gives them. There's not much thought or logic behind the estimates phone reps give. And it's not important enough for UPS to ensure reps receive training or special information.

My point? In this situation what we see when we track a single package (and what phone reps tell us about that single package's delivery time) means very little in terms of what the actual shipment is going to do.

If Apple wants them to come Saturday, they're going to come Saturday.
