Yeah, it's sad. But personally, I do/did the trade-in directly with apple, they recycle the materials and resell the phone. So, I think is better for the planet that someone buy a refurbished phone from apple than instead a brand new one!
My parents get really luck they get my old phones so they get more use as I buy every year. What they do with them at that point is not my problem.

And have you noticed OP hasn’t been involved any further in the ‘discussion’? Why would they be? Their mission to fire people up and watch the chaos that ensues has been accomplished. No matter which side of the ‘ethical and responsible’ fence you lay.

Just don't use the "t" word . . . it can get you banned here for "name-calling" (don't ask me how I know 🙄).

It's that time of year again, when Apple and its legions of followers will make you think you need to separate yourself from $1,500 of hard-earned money to get a new phone.

Here's a checklist I use when thinking about acquiring a new phone.

1. Will the phone do anything I need? No.
2. With the new phone, will I end up doing exactly the same things I'm doing with my present phone? Yes.
3. Will the phone make me happier? No.
4. Will the phone make me poorer? Yes, in several ways.

Food for thought...

So today I got a new battery for my 8 Plus. Totally happy, and probably good for another 2 years. :)
lol sorry if you can't afford this but anyone who says they're happy with an 8 Plus is full of it IMO

Are you speaking of the “useless gadget” that is a valuable tool for my livelihood? The useless gadget that fits in my pocket, which replaces the need for me to have to carry a computer, a camera and a phone? That useless gadget? Oh, I forgot, it actually also serves as a source of entertainment when needed as well. So yes Skippy, there are people who actually use their “useless gadgets” for more than playing Angry Birds. Go figure!
Sorry but you aint replacing a computer with a 6.x" smartphone so I call BS on that.

That’s a bit if an exaggeration. I think there are plenty of people out there still happy with an 8 Plus. Not everybody is into phones like many of us here. I owned one until 2 years ago and maintain it’s the best iPhone I’ve owned to date. My 12 has been mediocre by comparison, especially battery life.

Exactly! Life is too short to be wasted on smartphones or other useless gadgets that won't change your life in any way. There is really no difference between iPhone models. As long as it works, it’s fine. Same apps, same content, doing the same things. You're just trying to justify yourself there's a difference because you think that purchase will somehow make you happy. Well it will, but only for like five minutes. After that you have basically the same device, and much less cash. Don’t do it. Life is wonderful. Live your life. Gain experiences. You don’t need phone for that. Upgrade when it breaks or becomes truly unusable. It’s just a tool.

Thank you OP for starting this discussion. Trying to wake people up is not being negative.

The good thing about apple is the longevity of the devices, until last year I was using a 2014 mac mini without too much hicups, and the only device I currently plan on upgrading is my iPad pro 2018 because the ammount of RAM is showing it's age and isn't being enough for my currently workflow, 11 layers in procreate for A4 600dpi and clipstudio closing on itself and making me lose progress is driving me nuts, CPU wise it's incredible fine yet. and since apple killed the mini, I will keep my 13 mini for as long as they decide to reaunch a smaller device, like I did with my SE for 6 years.

If you find it useful then by all means get one. Personally it does nothing I actually need any better than my $50 flip phone. The watch is even more useless. The earbuds might be useful, but I'll stick to the noise-cancelling headphones. Trying to find the earbud that fell out while mowing the lawn might be a challenge. I am curious what the decibel reduction of the noise cancellation might be.

I have a new phone each year. Less than the price of a cup of coffee a day, I have a new iPhone.
I really hate it when people use this analogy for so many things because it's very misleading. If your only expense was the phone then okay but most people have other things to pay for which keep going up and buying a new phone every year or getting it just because it's new, make financially zero sense and it's no wonder so many are hugely in debt and live on credit.

I was still using an iPhone 7 Plus until a few months ago and bought new iPhone 13 Mini. I'll keep this phone at least 4 years.

Again, my comment was in reference to someone calling them useless gadgets. You can’t make a generalization and speak on everybody’s behalf that they are useless gadgets. For me, my phone is the Swiss Army knife of electronic devices. It is very useful, it is not a useless device.

It's tempting to purchase the new phone, especially when a friend is interested in getting your old phone for a price higher than Apple and a 3rd party collector have offered.

However, the 13 Pro is working fine, despite the critisims for its over sharpening of images, the photos it took aint that bad honestly. Not to mention it's still covered by another year of AppleCare+...should be worry free to use without any additional costs.

Maybe I should get a new case instead of a new phone...struggling. I started using iPhone since the iPhone 4, and only the iPhone 4 and the iPhone X had lasted two whole years of use.

Exactly how is it misleading? In my friends and family circle, there are people that cannot fathom spending money on a new phone unless their current phone is broken. Waste of money. However, they think nothing about the money they spend each day on Starbucks, on their cigarettes, their bottle of wine. In the end it’s all relative. I ended up getting my 12 Pro Max for under $400 US. Average it out and it’s less money than I would pay for a cup of coffee each day. Not misleading at all

Lots of 'guy whose personality is purchasing iPhones' ITT. Nowhere did OP say not to buy the phone if you want to; just offered that there's other ways of living one's life. Ironic everyone who's first instinct was to post 'LIVE AND LET LIVE' instead of just scrolling on by...

No one saying that you need to spend your savings on new phone. if you can afford it, buy it. If you are happy with your 8 plus then good for you. I do not see a point dissing people who love to buy and are Apple fanboys.

Ok, need to upgrade my iPhone (2016) model. Which one should I upgrade to? 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, or wait for 15😅

Mind you, I recently upgraded from an early 2014 MBA model to a base MBP 16" 2021. I couldn't be happier with the upgrade even though I actually don't need the high power, def an overkill lol. But boy, the screen size, resolution, sound and the RAM (dozens of apps, tabs all running at the same time used to make my dear old MBA huff, puff and frequently go into a coma🤣) make it worthwhile for me

No matter in which area...but I have only two Words for this annual buying frenzy (in all Areas of Tech):

Decandent, and environmentally unfriendly....especially in the current time.

Someone kinda said here that his 13Pro is already too old for his work...and then counted up things..that hardly need CPU time.

Hey boy, even magazines agree: RealWorld performance of the 13 Pro is enough for years.

And yes I would have the money, just as info. But I also think of my environment, and use my Money mostly on Important Things...like Family.

tl'dr :

Iphone 13 Pro (max) > IPhone 14 pro (Max) far from to be a important upgrade.

Only intresting thing would be Satcom for Emergency...but well only in the States and CA for now...and just the first two Years for free.

Great Mac upgrade! As for the phone, I wouldn't go 10 or 11 at this point. Probably 13 if cost matters more, 14 if you value the new features. As for whether to wait, well, only you can decide whether a) you can wait b) you want to wait :)

I’m not beating up the OP, that’s his call. For me, I’ve been around a while, stood in line for 14 hours on 6-29-2007 for the original iPhone and I am fortunate to be able to afford it. I’m always upgrading.
