I agree 100% with this.
I've purchased new phones every 2-2.5 years. Same w/ my wife and kids (who will be going on 3 years w/ iPhone 12).
My wife replaced Xs after a year because it, too, had battery issues. I was close to getting the 15 PM but held off because I have a new Anker 621 battery pack which is slow but does the job. (also charging is much faster and seems to be more ubiquitous than it used to be)

My battery is 88% with 225 cycles (I didn't realize it was this high).
I'm at 84% w/ 284 cycles on a 14 Pro. "Downgraded" from 13 Pro Max due to size but this phone/battery definitely feels like it's gotten worse, faster.

The 15 Pro is actually more of a true 14S Pro. I love the solid feel and weight of my 14PM. Not sure I really need lighter. The battery didn't change. I don't have any problem with my 14PM edges. The action button is nothing more than this year's version of the tap back. No one will really use it after a while. And when the biggest potential highlight year after year after year is the camera improvements and they go to serious lengths to over market that, it is just a true sign that for the most part phone technology barring a leaps and bounds type of innovative point is stable and so incremental it is tough to get excited about anymore.

Which brings me to my last point. So glad I made the decision to go from the 12PM to the 14PM last year so that I could maintain Lightning for a while longer. After being an every year or every other upgrader, I'm likely waiting for the 17 OR the Apple foldable.
Very well put. It definitely is a S upgrade. The only thing that significantly changed was the 5X camera. The lighter frame doesn’t matter much. The colors are kind of bland and I do prefer the heavier weight of my 14 pro max. Those of you that want a folding iPhone like the galaxy fold, you complain about the weight of the 14 pro/pro max these days, well, that’s going to be exactly like carrying two phones stacked on top of each other and heavier still! I don’t rely on the default iPhone camera to do everything for me. I currently prefer to use third-party apps like Halide or NOMO RAW, which is my current favorite app to get better results from my cameras. The even longer app is fantastic for star trails and long exposure shots day or night.

So I guess I’ll probably wait for reviews from the professional photographers out there using the 15 Pro Max to decide if I want to upgrade later or not. But this is my first time ever to not upgrade the following year for the next model.

Yeah, yeah I know all about perspective and other issues like that because I have been a photographer since 1988.
You do know way more about the subject then. Yeah the new telephoto is the only upgrade, it's these smaller incremental changes that add up over the years. I find it incredible that it's now possible to have a 120 mm F2.8 lens that even comes with autofocus and all that in a phone. My Pixel does 120mm as well but at F3.5. Small improvement but that's just from one year to the next.

These Sonys are great, I had one too and the only bad thing I found is that when I had to hand it off for repair I expected the 24-72 hours turn-around that I was used to from Nikon/Canon and it took them weeks due to a part being out of stock. Recently replaced that with a Pixel 7 Pro and gave in to the on-device optimizations, the ease of taking a virtually noise free photo in moonlight and being able to do that in unexpected moments where I'd never have thought of bringing a dedicated camera is great.

I guess being a professional photographer for so long I try and justify minor upgrades like that to buy a new phone but in reality, it’s still a tiny sensor with no aperture control, but I still enjoy the iPhone camera system and being able to edit the photo right there in your hand. It’s a lot of fun and sharing your photos right away without having to edit photos on a computer first and then putting them online or back onto your phone to do it from there takes a while. I do have Lightroom mobile on my phone and iPad so that makes things easier when carrying those items around all the time.

I watch Tony Northrup on YouTube quite a bit as he reviews new cameras, smart phones, and he just did a review on the Sony Xperia mark V which he said was really great, but still had weak points when compared to the iPhone camera. They both have their pros and cons. but I just haven’t been able to jump on the android platform. I’ve tried it before, but I didn’t like it because it doesn’t offer the same quality of photography apps that the iPhone does on their Google store. There are so many more apps available on iOS versus android that I use for photography. Android phones do have good cameras, but the software sometimes isn’t good for producing the best results. And I know android has been ahead of the curve and iPhone, or Apple is slow to catch up, or they create their own design to try and make it better, but it’s still years behind android, which is OK I suppose.

I really wish Apple would make an iPhone with a 48 to 60 megapixel sensor and a nice lens on one of those cameras equivalent to a 50 mm. That would be great. 24 mm is often too wide for a lot of things, and 12 megapixels really isn’t enough for me these days for the other cameras. I don’t know if I read your post earlier if you decided to upgrade to the 15 pro or pro max. Is that what you plan on doing? If so, which phone do you currently use?

Agreed. 50mm to 70mm was always my go-to for street photography which is how I started out, walking around town with a tiny camera and an almost-pancake lens.

I mainly use Pixel phones, right now it's the 7 Pro. I like the smaller iPhone 15 Pro but that doesn't have the 120mm so I am just not making any purchase this year.

Oh, I'd have to fully disagree there. You left out several upgrades that make this much more than a "s" especially for the Max versions. I usually upgrade when there are several hardware updates, but my count.
1) 3NM CPU first in Phone.
2) 2 Gig increase to 8 total gig
3) Double the Screen brightness
4) Ability to write directly to a hard drive
5) Finally 6E support
6) Slightly larger battery 12%
7) Better cameras - (always has better cameras)
8) Weights less
9) Almost forgot USBC!!!!

These are more than enough reasons for me to upgrade.

It’s all marketing! Sure recording directly to a drive is good for those who make movies with their iPhone, but mostly useless to those of us who don’t.
This is insane. I just watched this YouTube video minutes ago and was looking for somewhere to paste it. You beat me to it by 3 minutes! Lol 😂

iPhone 15 Pro crushes the 14 Pro in significant ways:
  • Lighter: Yes. It's about time.
  • Camera: Really introduces features that matter. Smart portrait mode. 120mm zoom mode. 24 mpix high-res standard photos. 48 is too big for many applications. Improved stabilization. This is a camera upgrade that matters, and it makes this new phone worth getting.
  • Action button looks really useful. One-click access to the camera? Yeah.
  • Rounded edges. So Apple listened to--or heard--the complaints about how uncomfortable these flat-edged, heavy phones are/were. About time.
There's more. But the 15 Pro is on my buy list. What were your takeaways?
hardware ray tracing anyone..lol. Sure it’s a phone.. but when I travel I have had a lightning to hdmi cable connected to any hotel room tv with wireless controller to game while I’m bored. From Genshin to Wreckfest to Grid Auto to Deus Ex, Oddmar and Alien isolation. Superb portable console. Now with this hardware upgrade and the AAA games slated for release…it’s a no brainer!!

It was like a stone slab brought down from Mt Sinai, I know. But I’d just do arm curls with it and get some gains..😇
You guys do realize that a case makes the phone a lot more comfortable, right? Like the leather Apple case, OtterBox commuter, and many others. The only reason the iPhone 14 pro max should feel heavy for you is if you’re stricken in age, have other disabilities that make the phone heavy for you, or you suffer from Wussatosis! LOL.

? Main lens on 14 Pro Max has 48 megapixels. iPhone 15, Plus, Pro, and Pro max the same.
You totally misread my post! I am “Wanting” Apple to create a main camera lens of 50mm (not 24mm) with a 48-60mp sensor. The current 24mm is too wide for most shots, especially portraits.

Battery life is identical to last year

I’m not convinced by this metric. Between the 3nm CPU/GPU, and the Qualcomm X70, assuming the battery is similar in size, battery life should be even better.

Now battery life, longevity/durability is a different question all together.

Translation: I don’t care so I assume neither does the average user.
Well if the user isn’t a photographer or know enough about photography, all we are going to be reading about is how bad the camera sucks and complaints about image quality because the photo was poorly executed….

Wow! That’s funny because I was debating on whether to post it or not. Glad we think alike. Tony reviews gear very well.
Well, when he gets his hand on a unit, I want to be hopeful that he is pleasantly surprised. We’ll see

I agree that the factors you mention should imply better battery life. But I have no doubt Apple would be screaming it from the rooftops if battery life were improved by any measurable metric. And yet, the advertised runtimes in all scenarios match the iPhone 14 Pro. Very disappointing.

Almost no upgrade
