Not sure how auto portrait mode isn’t on the 14 Pro phones, the 15 has it and is using the same chip. Thanks apple

I was wondering whether that's an iOS 17 feature or requires some hardware that's in the 15 phones. Wasn't clear to me. That feature should be purely software.

I just updated to iOS 17 RC on my 14 Pro Max, no auto portrait feature.

Agreed. Great for folks on a 12 or earlier line, 13 line is borderline. And you can say that every year about a 3 year old version. For the first time ever, I feel no desire to go for an annual upgrade. I'll be sticking with my 14PM until the 16 line, I believe.

I'm actually going to miss the mute switch. I have an action button on my AWU that can be programmed to do things, so one of the phone is superfluous (to me).
Same here. This is the first time I won't be upgrading since the 6. My 14PM will be fine another year.

14 pro max would make a decent home-based iPod on a stand since it's too heavy to carry around as a phone. ;)
It is not heavy. You lift a gallon of milk out of the fridge don’t you? that’s heavier than an iPhone. You probably carry around a water bottle to drink from all day long, that’s heavier than an iPhone! There are many things you carry with you every day that are heavier than an iPhone.

Apparently you are suffering from a symptom called “Wussatosis”. I carry two of these around with me every day they could be heavier, and I wouldn’t even complain.

I can understand if it’s heavy for you due to age or some other major symptom, but just basic complaints that it’s heavy is just silly.

I don't carry a gallon of milk in my pocket. Duh.

This is what an iPhone 14 PM feels like:

I guess Apple stressed that the new titanium shell was lighter because, well, no one complained about how heavy the stainless steel 14 PM was???

That is not a crush and just a moderate update. There really is just what was expected and then battery charge life is NOT improved by any amount even with the new processor. I was leaning towards getting a iPhone 15 Pro but I am of the opinion that with no real game changing to remain on the iPhone 14 Pro for another year

My concern is that it's flimsy. I have a work-supplied USB-C notebook, and the darn connector is so easy to dislodge. It never snaps in reassuringly. If this is what Apple offers, it will be absolutely horrible. Lightning I never had a problem with.
From someone who has used Android for years I can't say that I'm over the moon with USB-C. It's just another delicate port although thankfully not as delicate as Micro-USB. How many people do anything other than charge their devices through the port anyway?

I would prefer one of the old AUX charging ports! Lightning ports were best all round though, for speed and longevity. If people are saying that USB-C is the best thing to happen to iPhone for years then tech really has plateaued lol.

Agree. That and these infernal "cookie" notices on every web site are enough to make a person hate the EU regulators.
Yeah that cookie BS frustrates the hell out of me. We need to agree to them to use the website anyway so just do it and stop bugging me!

USB-C is flaky:

That sucks.
I know, there is no reason for it not to be supported considering the 14 pro have the same cpu and camera As the 15 and 15 max. Normally Apple would say, oh, it needs the new cpu etc but no excuses this time, they are just doing it to make it a 15 feature. Wankers,

Yeah, I really saw nothing in that feature that was anything but software: facial recognition, for example.

iPhone 15 Pro crushes the 14 Pro in significant ways:
  • Lighter: Yes. It's about time.
  • Camera: Really introduces features that matter. Smart portrait mode. 120mm zoom mode. 24 mpix high-res standard photos. 48 is too big for many applications. Improved stabilization. This is a camera upgrade that matters, and it makes this new phone worth getting.
  • Action button looks really useful. One-click access to the camera? Yeah.
  • Rounded edges. So Apple listened to--or heard--the complaints about how uncomfortable these flat-edged, heavy phones are/were. About time.
There's more. But the 15 Pro is on my buy list. What were your takeaways?

I typically upgrade every 2 or 3 years, and just bought a 1TB 14 Pro last year to replace my previous phone, an 11 Pro.

While these are all improvements (duh!), and I agree especially about going back to rounded edges, none of this is gonna make me upgrade only a year later. Nothing here "crushes" my current device IMHO.

The weight difference between the 14PM and the 15PM is 19 grams. The Pitaka carbon fiber case by itself is 17 grams and it feels as light as air. Most people have a case on their 14PM that is 2x that in weight. :p

Can you name a single thing for which lightning should be better than usb c?
It's better from a mechanical-connection standpoint. Because of the indented male connector, the female port can't wear or loosen like USB-C can and does. I've had several USB-C devices (included Apple iPads + MacBooks) stop working/charging due to too many cycles on the USB-C port.

We need USB-C on MacBooks, because Lightning simply can't provide the power or the data transmission rates that full-fledged computers need. So we live with the compromises. But iPhones (outside of super-rare cases) don't need that same wired connectivity or 100w worth of charging like a laptop.

Quite a few of us had the 2017 Touch Bar MBPs where the USB C ports wore down so bad just sneezing caused a disconnect. lol.

Yep. Even worse was the 12" retina MB (I had three of them), because you couldn't even switch or alternate between another port!

Durability

On the durability topic, a little sad the Ti is just an outer skin. Loved the strength of SS both for rigidity of the internal frame (now aluminum) and the outer perimeter being so resistant to deformation like dents (I don’t believe Ti to be an improvement here). Seems like a largely cosmetic feature now vs. functional before.

I'm not seeing a whole lot of value here in a $1200 upgrade vs a 14 Pro Max. I can see this being a big upgrade from those on 12's, maybe 13's but not a lot from 14 Pro Max.. unless the switch to USB C, minor cam upgrades (I'm guessing 98% of the population would never see the difference), and weight differences are a big deal for someone that just wants the latest. I'm usually an every year upgrade but on the fence this year whether a trade in with my 14 Pro Max and cash out of pocket makes sense with this one!

A very disappointing update. Last year we got Dynamic Island, Pro Motion, 48 MP sensor, satellite SOS. This year only the Max gets any significant camera improvements, and that leaves the action button as the standout (and useful) new feature.

Honestly the portrait mode stuff most people will never notice unless they’re blowing the photos up.

Crushes? My 12 Pro is still an awesome phone and gets "crushed" by no other phone because who crushes a phone? Dude Perfect?
