I had a play with a 8 plus today in store and compared to my 7 plus. I can get a free upgrade on my ee plan to one if i want to whioch just ties u into a 2 year plan again.

I just find it dull and dissapointing. The rear camera was improved i only noticed in the colours though. 8 plus has more saturation and pop. Besides that what else is there. glass back? dont care a case goes on. wireless charging its too slow dont care either. Just seems a pointless upgrade good for people on a 6 or 6s though. For me dunno what ill do i may just take the free upgrade for the sake of it but either way im not bothered. I would rather have the 8x but that just messes up the upgrade cycle as i dont see many people getting them on launch and xmas holidays could be nightmare for it.

Is the rear camera lens slightly above the beveled plastic piece as I have seen in videos? Wondering if this will be an eventual issue for those going caseless. Could maybe get scratched. I dunno, just thinking out loud.

New iPhone 8 owners, anybody disappointed that your apps close slightly slower now compared to a 7 running iOS 10.3.3?

Thanks. It worked. Talk about changing things for the sake of changing things. The old combo (power+volume down) is still the one that works on the iPhone 7 with iOS 11.

As mentioned before, I just held the on off button for a number of seconds and I got the Apple logo which I slid across to the right. I didn’t have to hit the up volume button or the lower volume button.

Someone else posted the correct sequence for a hard reboot on the iPhone 8 series, but I don't see the post here anymore.
  1. Press and release Volume Up
  2. Press and release Volume Down
  3. Hold Power until Apple logo appears

I'm using this combo but the only thing that happens is the "slide to shutdown" button appearing

:D:D:D:D

So lets see here.

iPhone 8+ has one OIS lens, iPhone X has two
iPhone X has a bigger taller screen than iPhone 8 in almost the same size as iPhone 8. screen surface 30% larger than iPhone 8 and 10% smaller than iPhone 8+
iPhone X moves forward with native HDR on screen.
iPhone X has 3X native resolution while iPhone 8+ like all + phones before it is downsamples 2x which incurs a 5% blurs on the image
iPhone X has better contrast, better color saturation, richer colors and deeper blacks combining OLED and above.
Face ID is more secure than Touch ID.
While parked if the phone locks up on your car dock, look at the screen instead of touching it to open it (
Front camera ALSO has portrait mode unlike 8+ which has portrait mode on back camera only. you know, for the TRUE selfie?
Display garners from one edge of the other.
Higher resolution than BOTH 8+ and 8 so more content on screen, clearer due to clearer display (see above)
Every hands on who has tried horizontal mode for media says the notch is not distracting when zoomed in.

Is that worth 200$ more? for the new direction Apple is taking.. yes it is. Will I be the guinea pig? probably because I believe in Apple's new direction more than you

This should be fun. Let's run through this list here....
1. I wouldn't mind OIS on the telephoto lens. I would welcome that.
2. Don't care about proportions to the 4.7" phone. It is a downgrade in size from what I use especially if you are counting the cute little ears at the top lmao
3. Native HDR on the screen is nice. Nice while letterboxed? Not so much.
4. Never have noticed a blurred image on my plus phones. Ever. That is hyperbole for click-bait bloggers.
5. Face ID might not even be here if Apple had figured out TouchID under the screen. I will be looking forward to all of the posts naming the situations where Touch ID would have been more convenient. Let's 'face' it....that is a given.
6. I don't dock my phone in my car. If parked, I pick up my phone and use it.
7. I am a 41 year old guy. I don't take selfies. No one wants to see this mug of mine.
8. Display garners from one edge to the other except unlike the plus, it letter boxes in landscape, is skinner and lacking content in width, and hides behind a notch when zoomed.
9. Again, not more content on the screen than the 8+ due to a) the ears b) letter boxing c) horrific screen ratio
10. Every hands on who tried the horizontal mode for media who said the notch is not distracting when zoomed in lied to you lol. This thread right here says it all....

In truth, I hope that you love the hell out of the X. I have nothing against you personally. We have different expectations from our devices and that is fine. For me, I value viewing experience and I have no doubts that despite less PPI and lack of HDR, the 8 Plus will provide me a better experience just based on the pictures in that link above. Money is not the issue. Value is. And I do not see the value in the X and only responded to you to let you know that your mind reading skills, while impressive, were inaccurate when applied to me ;)

I just watched a video and the guy said that the Apple Leather case for the 7 is too tight on 8. Can someone verify if it’s true?

Lol and that’s how you turn off your phone.

We were trying to do a soft-reset.

You must be doing something wrong. The combo is correct. At the end keep the power button pressed for 6-7 seconds.

I went from a 7 to 8, only because ebay guaranteed resale price and an Apple store gift card made it free. It's a nice 'off year' phone. Little bit fatter and heavier than the 7 but I already forgot about it. The screen is sharp and easy on the eyes thanks to true tone. Wireless charging works well too. The one thing really noticeable is that iOS 11 is much more stable than it was on my 7. I think its pretty obvious they optimized it for the new phones and kind of neglected the older models. Which is a shame, but whatever.

Phone is awesome. Moved from a 7 Plus (I'm impatient). The camera is better than the 7 Plus. 4k 60fps video recording is terrific. Glass back makes phone feel more premium. I can take or leave TruTone. Worth $949 for the 256gb model? Maybe not, but sold my 7 Plus for 720 so is it worth $230 more? Yes, no question.

i actually agree with most of your points..
especially the 8+ comparisons.. really not sure about what to think of the X screen ration.. maybe in real life i'll like it. but in those pics it seems like the viewing experience really suffers. the only thing i'll really like is the telephoto OIS.. seems rather important to my needs.

I have one and yes it is a little tight. I got it in there but it took some work. Same with my Spiegen silicone case. Probably not worth retooling the factory to make new ones for the 8 but it could result in some extra wear on the case and phone I suppose.

Honestly guys, the things the X has over the 8 Plus are few. Screen difference, Slight camera difference and FaceID instead of TouchID. Camera difference is better but the rest is really personal preference ya know?

Thank you! I wonder if the new Apple cases are different, I see that they are sold “for 7/8”

My hope is that you and anyone else who gets the X loves it. I tell ya I waited 12 months to finally get a bezel-less phone but the keynote left me disappointed and the hands on videos even more-so. It's not for me, but not because of cost, or fear, or other things suggested by others. I just like the screen ratio of the 8 plus better.

X is also lighter than Plus.

but that's exactly my problem. i'm not sure i can enjoy the different ratio.
but also hate them top/bottom bezels... useless.
i'll have to hold them and see.

The bezels are dated for sure. It's really a trade off of bezel or ratio. I was hoping a company with damn near $300B in cash reserves could pull off a phone that killed the bezel AND achieved a solid screen ratio without a better UI. I guess it was more important to get that campus completed.

Picked up the 8 plus this morning at Verizon. No line. I had a 7 plus previously. Been a huge iPhone fan for years and after watching the keynote with the X, I wasn’t totally blown away. After reading the rumors about production challenges, liking the plus screen size (I know, the X is taller, but it’s not as wide), and not knowing the reliability of Face ID, upgrading to the 8 plus felt a little more safe this year. Obviously it’s familiar, yet it feels different. The glass back is very nice and as mentioned previously, gives the plus a high end feel. It’s also easier to hold on to. The screen is beautiful. Colors pop and the True Tone does give it a warmer feel. It’s quick...extremely quick. Speakers are louder, have more clarity, and a little better low end...I wouldn’t quite call it bass. Personally, i don’t care about bezels. I’ve liked this form factor since the 6 plus originally launched. So for me, is it “worth” upgrading? Yes. Is it much different than the 7 plus? Probably not overall, but it definitely feels like an upgrade. At the end of the day, the internals are the same as the X. Battery life, wireless charging, etc. I will give you a heads up, the gold is interesting. In certain light, it appears a little like rose gold and can take on a blush or pinkish hue. Some light it takes on a creamier white look on the back and deeper gold on the sides. It’s different. Classy looking. Should Apple be criticized for launching the 8 series? No. It’s a solid upgrade, but everyone’s definition and expectations of what an upgrade should be is going to be different. I’ll say this, it’s the absolute best design this form factor has ever had in my opinion. Hope everyone enjoys whatever model they are looking at. Good luck for those “X” hunters out there. Part of the fun will be finding one when it launches.
I totally agree with you!

Oh man talk of confirmation bias

You may not have noticed a blur image but it was never as sharp as it could have been if it was not downsampled. True sharpness will be something to witness on the iPhone X. Gruber has sources inside Apple including engineers and executives. He was told touch ID was abandoned a year before announcement date before Apple engineers even attempted to finalize an attempt to get touch ID under the screen. There is a reason Apple bought 2 companies whose technologies are needed for Face ID in 2013, 4 FULL years before making this final decision. Its never about if Face ID was a last minute addition, it was always on the cards. Apple would not risk their MAIN money maker with a technology which they know would often fail in the hands of consumers. There are too many competent people at Apple still left to let that happen.
As you said you pick up your phone and use it and Face ID is fast enough to unlock it before you even think of what to do next on your phone.
You don't take selfies but this is the snapchat and instagram generation, it is a big deal for such a generation when they use it and they will, just like emojis.
The display for movies and images is only letterboxed if you want it letterboxed. There are two settings, show in rectangular mode and show in full screen mode where the zoom does not go beyond the screen. See the MKBHD hands on to see how good it looks.
X has a 30 taller screen than + so the vertical content is more available while the X is 10% thinner than the + which places its horizontal consumption in the middle of 8 and 8+ and overall 20% more screen area because MOST apps will run in vertical mode and most of the horizontal mode items will cover the entire display (including the notch) which the hands on folks did NOT find distracting.

I saw that thread with the horizontal display, now go 15 posts down and see the vertical display and tell me if the higher resolution does not give the X a much bigger advantage than any iPHone

I went from a 6 Plus to an 8 Plus. My 6 Plus had been having some speed issues, taking 20-30 seconds to load certain apps. This thing is screaming fast. I think I'm going to like True Tone more than I thought I would. Looking forward to giving the camera a good workout on my hike tomorrow.

Exactly why I ended up buying an 8 against all expectations.

Go back eight weeks and I was posting on here firmly believing there wouldn’t be a 7s (as it was dubbed prior to the keynote). I didn’t believe they would actually drop the £1000 bomb and saw them only releasing one new iPhone as a categoric ‘this is the iPhone now’ at the current Plus price point.

But I guess since it turned out to be true that they weren’t ready to manufacture the X in the numbers they’d have needed to pull that off (and they did go for a greedy price tag after all), we have the 8. And i’m glad because I feel like what I’ve got in my hand now is the final refinement of an already excellent device that will serve me well until such a time as Apple take the new design mainstream.

Got my 8 Plus, coming from a 7 Plus.

Setup was a breeze, popped up a notification from my 7 plus and was sailing from there.

Video HISS is still prevalent, major bummer...(almost return worthy but probably not)

Don't like the edges, much preferred the 7 plus. 7 Plus matte black looks nice to me. If they went from the 8 Plus to the 7 Plus case I'd be like, yeah, nice....

Grabbed a Qi charger I've had for 3 years in a box, some cheap piece of junk, and the 8 Plus dinged and started charging, even had a slim case on there from my 7 Plus. I very much like this feature.

Personally I won't use a device that requires facial reckognition. I'd rather use the old passcode method. TouchID is perfect I think. It's super convenient, and I also have it on the MacBook Pro 2017 which I'll use for many many years to come. And I don't want a mix of FaceID and TouchID on multiple devices.

This. I know if they continue with FaceID, I may end up with ipads with Touch and an iPhone with FaceID, but that was definitely a key factor in ordering the 8+....having my devices with TouchID.
