Oh man talk of confirmation bias..... or knowing what I prefer and do not prefer which seems to get lost on your mind reading skills

You may not have noticed a blur image but it was never as sharp as it could have been if it was not downsampled. True sharpness will be something to witness on the iPhone X.
(I do not care if the screen on the X is 4K....if it is that narrow, that crappy of an aspect ratio, and hides behind a damn notch then I do. not. care. what resolution it has. How else can I explain this to you???)

Gruber has sources inside Apple including engineers and executives. He was told touch ID was abandoned a year before announcement date before Apple engineers even attempted to finalize an attempt to get touch ID under the screen. There is a reason Apple bought 2 companies whose technologies are needed for Face ID in 2013, 4 FULL years before making this final decision. Its never about if Face ID was a last minute addition, it was always on the cards. Apple would not risk their MAIN money maker with a technology which they know would often fail in the hands of consumers. There are too many competent people at Apple still left to let that happen.
(And Ming's sources state that the main reason the phone is delayed is because Apple tried to the very last second to get TouchID under the display, and couldn't. Pick your source. Regardless, I touch my phone from ANY angle and it unlocks. I don't even have to pick it up. I can glance over to see what I need. Even in bed in the dark. Let me know how that works out for ya.)

As you said you pick up your phone and use it and Face ID is fast enough to unlock it before you even think of what to do next on your phone.
(As long as you are looking at it, not away from it, with your eyes open. My fingerprints never fail. On to the next)

You don't take selfies but this is the snapchat and instagram generation, it is a big deal for such a generation when they use it and they will, just like emojis.
(We are talking about personal preferences here. I don't care what a single other soul does with their phone)

The display for movies and images is only letterboxed if you want it letterboxed. There are two settings, show in rectangular mode and show in full screen mode where the zoom does not go beyond the screen. See the MKBHD hands on to see how good it looks.
(And once you zoom in, content is hidden behind the notch. Pathetic. And in some cases as seen in hands on video, the zoom crops out footage of the video. Unacceptable. Plus it is oddly long and narrow. Horrible ratio. Have we mentioned yet that while scrolling the web, the horizontal swipe up bar actually covers text? Embarrassing)

X has a 30 taller screen than + so the vertical content is more available while the X is 10% thinner than the + which places its horizontal consumption in the middle of 8 and 8+ and overall 20% more screen area because MOST apps will run in vertical mode and most of the horizontal mode items will cover the entire display (including the notch) which the hands on folks did NOT find distracting.
(Hey, if they didn't find it distracting, good for them. To me it is a fata$$ pimple dead center on a forehead. Not to mention the horizontal bar that strikes out content because it does not disappear. And things like photo thumbnails in the photos app look so much smaller on the X due to the narrow width. To each their own)

I saw that thread with the horizontal display, now go 15 posts down and see the vertical display and tell me if the higher resolution does not give the X a much bigger advantage than any iPhone
(Ummm if you go 15 posts down they are then comparing it to the 4.7" display lol, not the plus. So, no, I don't see the big advantage.

Have pics with it on? I almost ordered this exact case. I got an Apple Leather case instead but I might return it since it was $50.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01L1F1OV6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

As said, been running this case for 3 years... survived many drops without a scratch.

Disclaimer: These photos were taken with my old 6s Plus. :)

Anyway, I literally just powered it up and got it activated and am very impressed so far. A definite huge upgrade over the 6s Plus!!!

Lol and that’s how you turn off your phone.

We were trying to do a soft-reset.

You must be doing something wrong. The combo is correct. At the end keep the power button pressed for 6-7 seconds.

Both methods on my 8+ does the same darn thing. I click the up volume button and the lower volume button then afterwords the on off button, and I get the same swipe to shut down, no Apple Logo. I get the Apple logo when I press and hold the on/off button for a few seconds after a restart and I have to add my Apple ID. Do you even have the iPhone 8 ?

From Apple - On an iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus: Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Then press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Finally, press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.

And if anyone is having activation issues, try putting in your previous billing zip code. The system seems to be looking them up incorrectly.

Having upgraded from iPhone 6s Plus, my first immediate positive was the performance. iPhone 8 Plus is FAST! The design is gorgeous, especially on my black model, although I’m one of the people who use a case, so I only «admire» its design at home on the couch :p Other positives include the storage space (I got the 256GB version as I store a lot of files) and True Tone display. Only negative side so far, and it really concerns iOS 11 more I think, is that there are some unnecessarily long folder animations. Storing all my apps in folders, it’s annoying to wait every time :p

Got my 8 Plus, coming from a 7 Plus.

Setup was a breeze, popped up a notification from my 7 plus and was sailing from there.

Video HISS is still prevalent, major bummer...(almost return worthy but probably not)

Don't like the edges, much preferred the 7 plus. 7 Plus matte black looks nice to me. If they went from the 8 Plus to the 7 Plus case I'd be like, yeah, nice....

Grabbed a Qi charger I've had for 3 years in a box, some cheap piece of junk, and the 8 Plus dinged and started charging, even had a slim case on there from my 7 Plus. I very much like this feature.
Did you have video hiss on the 7 Plus you've been using all this time? I don't have it at all on mine. I don't think it necessarily needs to plague all the IPhones so I would return and get one that doesn't hiss.

Loving my 8. That glass on the back feels awesome, it has a nice grip to it. Phone is super fluid because of the A11 chip , can’t wait for my X. If this phone feels premium already, I could imagine the beast coming out on November 3rd. As soon as the X arrives I’m either selling or gifting, not sure lol. Whomever needs an upgrade though, this is a solid phone, even though the design has been recycled for years.

I’m not sure if its been talked about in here already but how do you guys feels about TrueTone? It took some getting use ton my iPad Pro and I guess I’m in the same phase with the 8+. I feel like I prefer the permanent cool tint of the display.

I guess I will be the exception so far. I got my 8 Plus this am and I am moving from a 7 Plus. Honestly I am already struggling to find a good reason to keep it. The differences are so slight. I am going to use it over the weekend to see if I can justify the move. I really WANT TO LOVE IT but right now I just am not impressed. I am hoping for some hidden tidbits to entice me to keep...

A friend got a 8 Plus today. I have a 7 Plus. I only played with it for a few minutes, but in doing everyday comparisons vs my phone, it definitely didn't seem worth it to me. For them yea, since upgrading from an older phone with issues. For 7 I don't see the point.

Well... I my gut yes but I was hoping... Maybe I will feel better after the weekend if not then off it will go and order a X on the 27th with everyone else.
Since you have already gotten the iPhone 8 plus, your spot in line for the iPhone X has been given away to one of your fellow forum members. Your understanding on this matter is greatly appreciated, as you have now given someone else the ability to get the iPhone X, where chances were slim to none before.

I
Gruber has been wrong before... I think if Apple can figure how to make it work with the OLED display they will in fact bring it back. Why because the competition is going to force them too with Samsung and others not only offering Face ID, Iris Scanning and Touch... Apple just having Face ID will keep them behind the curve. It is also going to depend on how well it works and the feedback they get in the next several months too. It seems pretty clear they wanted to include Touch ID, but just couldn't make it work.
I can very easily see apple bring back Touch ID and saying “our customers love Touch ID so we are giving you the choice to use what ever you like “. They brought back the iPhone SE (5) two years after it was discontinued and said the same thing. Our customers love smaller phones.

Just upgraded from my iPhone 6s Plus today.

I just want to start with the design, which I really do prefer over the previous iPhone iterations. The glass back has a nice finish and I have no issues holding the phone. For reference, I got the white version which looks very nice.

The screen is noteably clearer than my iPhone 6s Plus and it is far quicker than my previous phone. I’m still getting use to true tone, right now I haven’t had much outdoor experience so it has mostly a yellow tint, but hope to update people more on this in the near future.

Finally, I want to finish on the camera and wireless charging. The camera is amazing, such an improvement. It has been such a while since I’ve seen a noteable camera improvement. I previously upgraded from an iPhone 5s to 6s Plus and yes there was a difference but I couldn’t ever determine if it was a good difference. The iPhone 8 plus definitely has better quality so I’m so pleased.

I picked up a £12 wireless charger from Amazon which was one of the best sellers and it works like a dream. I never considered myself as a wireless charger but I thought I would just try it out and I love it. The chargers are so cheap! I really recommend you try this feature out. I previously couldn’t care less but I really do like it!

As with many here, I fully expected I would buy the X. I have been on the every other year cycle since the 3g (4,5,6), but skipped the 7 last year to wait for the rumored X. So i’ve been rocking my 6 plus for 3 years now, and have reached the point where it will die after 4 hours if not charged. I couldn’t run the risk of needing to wait into 2018 if the X shortages are as bad as some are claiming as I work a ton from my phone during the day and have been living with a slim battery pack in my pocket constantly for the last 6 months anyway.

I bought the 8+ because as a tall guy I really have no reach issues with the size, and I had concerns about the Face ID being a backup to the Touch ID they wanted to put under the display. I really dont know how it’ll be to need to use the face to unlock, and decided I’d let everyone else prove how great it was!

Coming from a 6+ I couldn’t be happier with the 8+. It’s definitely not an exciting purchase - as everyone has pointed out it’s basically the same look as my 6 plus. The speed is a huge upgrade as is the camera. These are all duh comments.

Ultimately I got the phone on the Apple iPhone upgrade program, with the intention to keep it two years, pay it off and sell it as i’ve Always done. If the X is as mind-blowing as people say and I can’t not have it, i’ll Upgrade next year.

One note, through the iPUP the phone was $699 + 129 for AppleCare + $90 tax + I think some kind of AT&T activation fee or something like that. So the 8+ 64 GB ended up at just over $1k financed. Gulp.

I am already jealous of the folks who are holding out for the X and the excitement of it, but wanted to share my thoughts and decision process in the event anyone else was in a similar state of mind. I hope the X is everything we all hope it will be and i’ll Have no choice but to upgrade next year.

I’m really enjoying on 8+:

  • Great battery
  • Speed of everything
  • Camera (fantastic)
  • Surprisingly something I didn’t think I’d even care about either way, but the speakers are way better than I thought they’d be.
Not iPhone 8plus related but still not loving iOS music app and iMessages feels cluttered. Just one opinion..

Loving it - my first impression is that my “silver” kind of looks like a white 4S - I think Apple misnamed these colors frankly

Awesome camera

8+ is easier to use one handed with the “slide over” keyboard now too (that helps 7+ and 6+)

I’m going to the Apple store tomorrow for other stuff, so I’ll be able to compare the other colors

I upgraded from a 6 to the 8. Love the weight and feel of the phone in my hand. The X looks amazing, but I hate not having Touch ID.
