Why would the SE get the action button when the more expensive 15 and 15 plus didn't?
Obviously they are planning for the future. Only the 15 Pro has the Action button now, but maybe next year the regular 16 and 16 Plus will get it. In case you haven't noticed, they pass Pro features down to the regular iPhones a year or two later.

Given that this would be based on the 14 design, the 14 won't be sold anymore when the new SE goes on sale. Apple is still selling the 13--but not the 12--now that the 15 is out. Based on this, it takes 3 years for an iPhone to be removed and we can extrapolate that this SE would go on sale around the time of the iPhone 17 (2025).

This also makes sense given that Qualcomm is supplying modems to Apple until 2026. Introduce the Apple modem in the new SE in 2025 and have a year to refine things before including the Apple modem in all models of the iPhone 18 in 2026.

Why are several folks here calling this the next "mini"? Because it's cheaper than the others? The iPhone 14, which this is rumored to be based off of, is significantly larger than the 12/13 mini. The iPhone 14 is nearly identically the same dimensions/weight as the iPhone 15. Many of us really like/liked the mini because of its form factor not because of its price. And many of us would pay a premium for a Pro-level mini.

Yeah, the Mini's greatest strength IMO is being able to throw on a stout case and not end up with a phone the size of a piece of toast.

iPhone SE - 6.1" based on iPhone 14
iPhone 16 - 6.1" (maybe 6.3")
iPhone 16 Pro - 5.8" and 6.3"
iPhone 16 Ultra - 6.8"

Honestly I believe the FaceID & USB-C more than some weird camera bump and the action button.

1 camera should keep price down.

Againa absolutely no information of the screen size at all

I still fondle an old iPhone 6 I have laying around, I really do miss that tiny little form factor although preferring the 6's really nice wraparound style, if only it didn't have the huge touch ID and bezels.
yeah, my 1st gen SE is imposible to use on the internet at this point due to larger screens being the norm

I realize some of you prefer LCD and/or Touch ID for various reasons, but LCD and/or Touch ID-based iPhone represents less than 5% of iPhone sales. Apple probably stands to gain far more sales by offering iPhone SE 4 with OLED and Face ID.

iPhone 14 currently sells for $699, and it can be argued that by the time iPhone 16 rolls around in September 2024, it will be reduced to $599. So if iPhone SE 4 launches in the spring of 2025, it can probably hit $499 price point while still maintaining the margin, but sell at greater quantity.
You’re absolutely right. I wish you weren’t, but you are.

I would say that's accurate. I really don't like the faceID thing. I don't even know how to use it. I am used to the home button on the iPhone, iPad, and the thumb button to unlock Macs.

The device will not feature a Touch ID home button, but will instead have Face ID as the means of biometric identification.

*nope*

No way, no how.

I have FaceID on my iPad Pro, and living with it for months convinces me I never want it in another device, ever.

Oh wow! Another USB 2.0 phone! 🤩 Thank you, Tim Cook! Year 2000 technology still used 24 years later in 2024. "Can't innovate anymore, my a**!"

I seriously wish you were CEO of Apple instead of Tim Cook.

All I want is an iPhone mini with a 2x or 3x camera. I fancy GPU, no fancy materials needed. Just a tiny phone with a good camera. The .5x fish-eye camera isn't suitable for every day photos in my opinion, it's a great artsy camera. For an SE all I want is a tiny phone with a 2x/3x camera.

I think Apple might be at a good place to experiment with hardware subscriptions and improved sustainability.

Rebrand iPhone SE as simply iPhone.
  • iPhone 14 Pro notch.
  • iPhone 12 camera system & display (unless newer is cheaper)
  • 6GB ram
  • 128GB storage
  • 5'4" and 6'7" size options
  • A15
Charge $14.99 or $19.99 a month.
  • Theft, damage & malfunction insurance included.
    • Damaged units will be replaced once per 2 years free of charge.
    • A refurbished unit will be offered.
  • Free battery after 24 months of payment.
  • Save $1 a month when your Apple Card is charged.
Sales channels:
  • iPhone is only sold as a subscription.
    • Cancel anytime and return the phone.
      • Sign-up any time. A used iPhone, of the same model or better, will be given.
    • Not returning the used phone will result in a pro-rated credit card charge.
      • Sign-up any time, once the charge clears, and receive a new unit of the latest model.
    • Upgrade your subscription at any time, by returning your current unit.
      • A new 4 year "subscription block starts".
    • Apple will send you a new unit on your 48th month unless you opt-into a battery & insurance subscription for $2.99/month.
      • Upgrade your subscription at any time.
  • Excess used units will be sold as iPhone Certified Refurbished only in countries where Apple can't offer a subscription model or chooses not to.
iPhone development:
  • Apple will quietly release new models every 1-3 years.
    • New models will offer slight improvements using Pro models components that are being retired from the Pro line.

Will take quite some time for Apple to release the new SE. Wonder how much the price will be.
