I got my wife an X for $999. I got myself a 70" LG TV for $999. Seems crazy to me, but my wife was thrilled with the phone. I admit it's pretty impressive, but I do feel it's $300 overpriced. Most phones now days probably cost more than they should, but here we are. I paid $650 or something for a new galaxy s4 around 4-5 years ago. I remember telling myself that was crazy and I would never pay more than that. For someone who uses their phone all day long, the price is a bit easier to swallow. I still felt a bit ripped off, but it's my fault for paying that price. The X plus will be even more, so this conversation will be on going for years to come.

At the end of the day my wife LOVES her X, so the $999 I paid is "worth" it to me, even though I do feel it's too expensive.

I bought and resold mine without opening it. My usual plan is to buy a phone every 2 years and I bought a 7+ in 2016. So I decided to flip the X and wait for the new one this year. Current phone does just fine.

Also, from one Porsche owner to another - if you're not driving air-cooled, you're driving crap. I bet you own something like a Macan or Cayenne. That's doubly not a real Porsche in my book.

So I have had pretty much every model of iPhone since 4, certainly would never miss out on the hardware change versions.

I ordered iPhone X, and then decided to cancel it because I think the price is ridiculous.

The touch ID missing is a problem for me because I use my phone in many different places, including places where face id would not work. And many people are complaining about how bad face id is.

I'm not a stranger to spending stupidly, I have a stupidly expensive run car (Porsche) and spend thousands on servicing.

Humble brag

I think a Porsche is too expensive and poor for the price.
Only 2 seats (normally) so can’t fit all the family in,
costs too much to run,
insurance too expensive,
I commute to work by train so would only drive at weekends for fun,
too wide so won’t fit in my garage.

But if they made a smaller cheaper, 4 seater, fuel efficient Porsche then I’d consider buying one!

I’m off to the Porsche forums to post this in a new thread and see if any else feels the same, hoping for some positive replies! Wish me luck!

Didn't expect so much comments on the car. I'd say Porsche is incredibly value for money for what it is, and it beats every car in it's price range for all round performance. My 911 has back seats and I can get my friends in there just about. Yes I do spend thousands on servicing and maintenance each year but that is why I work so hard.

But as I said it is value for money. I went to Harrods the other day and saw they were selling bottle of coke for £4, which I didn't buy because its ridiculous pricing, but I did buy a pair of nice designer jeans because the quality of the material was nice and I can wear it many many times over my lifetime.

But the iPhone X falls into the poor value for money section. I would have gladly paid £800 or whatever I normally pay every year for the top model, but £1150 at a time when mobile phone hardware prices are decreasing rapidly, it is ridiculous, and it is no surprise Apple are dropping it for the new release.

On top of the very expensive price, is the fact that there are many issues with the phone. If the phone was perfect, and we all know it is far from perfect, then I would have paid the price, been a little bit angry for a day and moved on. Many times I don't want to pick up my phone to unlock it whilst it is resting on my desk. Touch id was perfect for this as I didn't have to bring my face forward or lift the phone up. Also it has been shown that there is less usable screen compared to the plus models.

I don't like the fact that I have to pay hundreds extra on an already expensive product which has several problems that the previous models did not have.

So if they release a model for around £800 with LCD, I will probably buy it - and obviously many people feel the same.

2007 911 mate. Trust me it is a real Porsche. I'm don't get air cooled at all, I know that is a controversial statement but it's not for me. The modern Porsche 911s have all the technology, comforts and performance one would want - but that is my opinion - but just don't get the aircooled.

Yeah i don't get it. $300 for OLED and to unlock your phone with your face. Sounds like first world problems. The screen has been shown to be the same size. And Samsung uses OLED at similar Iphone price. I get they are computers but does that mean if similar technology is put in a Mac its going to be $300 more? (touch bar gimmick same thing)

This all proves that Apple is great at one thing. Selling products. IMO, this was their experiment to charge more for an I-phone and people took the bait on a 1 run, EOL product.(if rumors are true).

But hey, people can buy what they want. If you want it, buy it. If you dont, dont.

Off topic, but its amazing to me that people dont take into account the efficency of making a product. Like the unibody macs with a light aluminum and how they are put together. This process could not only help them make it faster, but could also cost them less, saving them $50 on that product while they charge $50 more for this "amazing feat of engineering". Apple is brilliant.

Anyone else feel similar? Poor value for money?
My wife and I each have the 6s Plus and have decided to stay with it because of the price increase from the 6 to 7, 7 to 8 and X. I love the technology and it's a lot of fun to play with but I can think of a lot more to do with over 2k just to play with a phone. We won't pay it. As far as we're concerned, Apple just priced itself out of the market, at least for us. We're looking seriously at Android devices for our next upgrade.

Apple will always sell an iPhone for much less than the $1k+ iPhone X. When the time comes you can spend less for a new iPhone. Going to Android is simply not an option for me.

Can you elaborate on what "all of these issues" are with the iPhone X? It still sounds like your only issue is losing touch ID, which I could understand... but again like I mentioned before lots of people have gotten over it after trying Face ID for a while. You didnt even give it a chance... You have 14 days to try it.

I really don't get the price argument.

Notch? Ok, I can see people who watch a lot of video being irritated.

Coming from a plus? The screen is a little narrower, I can understand.

But iPhones were never cheap.

The 8+ entry is $799

The X is $999

$200 is $200, but most do some type of installment, and it's not like it's an incredible difference in cost anyway.

All depends of how big is your wallet being fair...yes the thing is expensive...but not if you are rich enough though...

iphone x is the BMW equivalent regarding cars...

You have a Porsche and think the iPhone X is too expensive?
Ookay then.

One can easily obtain an iPhone X without being Rich. There a large majority of iPhone owners who don't have 'big wallets' that use an iPhone X every day that likely can't afford it.

Is my opinion, but you can't compare an iPhone X to a BMW. I know some do, but there's no equivalencey at all to a car and a smart phone.

You obviously did not need the iPhone X. I like the 8plus but want the X screen resolution and the slim bezels. 1080 screen is so old tech.

Learn to service your own car especially Porsches. The iPhone X is free after one service.

$2000 for an inspection, some oil, and air filters? Screw them.

At least you're not driving a Bentley or something. Find half the parts have Audi logos on them with the same part numbers.

i paid $450.00 for my red iPhone7. For me the ios software defines my iPhone but i can see people wearing Prada shoes and appreciate a designer label clothing. They are buying the iPhone 8 or X.

That's quite a generalization, but unfortunately not an uncommon one. I have an iPhone X and I'm an IT staffer at a university. I do not wear designer labels. I don't even have a car (I bike and walk to work, and my wife drives a 10 year old Subaru). Our small city is mostly working class and the people who do make a lot of money don't flaunt it much. When they do have something expensive they always make a point of saying they got a good deal on it. Last weekend I was having a beer with a coworker who had gone to New York to visit family. He attended an event in Manhattan that attracted a lot of people who looked expensively dressed and he said that for the first time he saw a lot of the "thousand dollar iPhones" in public.

Once again this comes down to price (the same for everyone) vs value (which can vary dramatically from person to person). To you an iPhone 7 is a better value because obviously you do not care about the newer/higher specificiations and features that the 8 and the X have over the 7. And if those advantages don't provide you with any benefits because of how you use your iPhone, then why should you care? To many people an iPhone is an iPhone as long as it's a reasonably recent model that runs well. At the same time I am sure you understand that there are people who buy smartphones for different reasons and use them for different things and have different expectations. I'm an amateur photographer so I highly value every little camera advancement I can get, and I want dual cameras without having to carry a plus-sized iPhone. That's the primary reason why it was worth it to me to pay over $1,000 for the iPhone X, and yes I am happy with my purchase. Does that mean the iPhone X has the same value to me that it might have to someone wearing Prada shoes? I don't know... perhaps if they are into photography as well? I know there are many people who just assume that the designer label crowd is buying the iPhone X only for the status of having the latest and greatest. While I'm sure that is true for some, it's not exactly fair to pain them all with that brush. Even Manhattan's socio-economic elites have their own personalities and individual smartphone needs ;)

If your Porsche dealer is charging you $2000 for what you said, you are being taken. My inspection, oil and filters cost me about $200.
And what service is performed on the iPhone X, the one you mentioned? ;) I want to get a free X!

When in warranty, the service inspection was maybe not $2000, but $1000+ for sure. Now out of warranty, I do all my own service work. Cost about $200 like you said. I'm just wondering what dealer you're using that only charged $200 for service cause my wipers cost $100 at the Porsche dealer when the same thing costs $20 on Amazon. Or that oil filter for $60 when it's $15 on Amazon.

And the iPhone X comment is (Price of service at dealer) minus (Cost of doing your own service) is equal to or greater than the (Price of iPhone X) ;)

IPhone 8 for $699 isn’t a good deal either, imo

750p, single cam, 2gb of ram. 4th time relatively same design.

Or 8 Plus for $799

All iPhones are overpriced, X just more so.

I think 8 should Go for $549, and 8 plus for $700, X for $800

All I can tell you my last service, which was oil/filter change, flush and replace brake fluid, full inspection with approx. 25 items, was $350 which of course added the brake fluid flush we hadn't discussed. I have NEVER had any service required by Porsche Maintenance booklet that cost even $1000. I will have owned it 5 years next month. And yes I buy my parts aftermarket and give them to the dealer to use.
So an iPhone X is still more expensive to me, than the service you mention.
But thanks for the reply.
Better read this quick before the mods delete it for being off topic, even if we are trying to use the iPhone X as an analogy.

The $549 replacement cost for X if you shatter the back glass is downright psychotic and price gouging people in a tight spot

Well this whole thread is kind off topic, but it helps that you have a good working relationship with your dealer. My BMW dealer is great, I get all sort of parts at great prices. Never did like the Porsche dealer prices and they sure aren't interested in letting me bring my own parts.

I don't know.... not that many years ago here was my daily carry:

Motorola Razr phone (don't remember cost of phone with contract)
Palm Tungsten T5 (had PalmOS devices starting with the IIIx and up to the iPhone 3G) $399
Creative Zen Vision M 30 GB multimedia player $329
Panasonic DMC-LX2 10MP camera $480

So that adds up to a bag full of gear that cost $1,200 and that doesn't include the price of the phone and the mobile contract. The iPhone X replaces all of those devices. You could make the argument that even a less expensive iPhone 6s or 7 could replace all of those devices, but the camera is where things get tricky. Have you priced a modern compact camera that can shoot 4K video at 60fps? Now I currently shoot a lot of my stills with an Olympus OM-D E-M5 m4/3 camera. It's a few years old so it can't do better than 1080p video. It's great for stills, but the iPhone X is going to be better for video unless we are talking low light conditions. If you want to buy a video camera that can shoot 4K to compliment an older iPhone then you are going to spend at least $300 to shoot 4K at 30fps. If you want 60fps you need to spend at least $400 for something like a GoPro Hero 6.

I guess given my gadget purchasing history I have a hard time seeing the iPhone X as a bad deal. That said, it makes the iPhone 8+ a bargain and the 7+ a steal. It just depends on whether the differences are worth it to you. Of course I would prefer to pay less than I did for the X, but I know I will get my money's worth out of it.
