Here are several interesting tidbits:

https://www.zdnet.com/article/goodb...h-and-size-put-the-iphone-xs-back-in-my-hand/

"After six weeks, I realized I just could not put up with the less capable wireless technology (of the XR) that daily made my streaming media pause on my commute and had calls drop without warning."

https://www.androidpolice.com/2018/...lems-with-call-quality-and-connection-issues/

"Many Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL owners are reporting a wide variety of issues related to phone calls, behaviors which cover a range of things from more "basic" call sound quality problems like choppy or inconsistent audio and tinniness to long call connection times and intermittent microphone failure.

Reports are widespread, with a surprising number of threads posted to both Google's Product Forums and Reddit. Based on those reports, the issue doesn't seem to be restricted to any one carrier or device, with both sizes and seemingly multiple SKUs in several countries experiencing call-related issues, and the problems manifest on both Wi-Fi and cellular calls."

---------------------------------------------

The reason i highlight these two articles is because both of the mentioned phones (XR and Pixel 3) have better "numbers" according to FCC filings.

As i mentioned before, FCC documents are NOT to be used to come to any conclusion in real world performance.

Hope that i don't offend anyone here with this post.... :D

I received my iPhone XS Max yesterday and I have been using it for around 7 hours now. Comparing it to an old iPhone 6 Plus I see no difference in coverage.

I haven’t tested it against my old iPhone X yet as I was busy and didn’t have time to setup for my parents. Will post results here if I find any difference.

I can’t test the speed unfortunately as the carrier I am on supports only LTE Cat4 which is supported by even the iPhone 6 Plus.

Edit: I noticed if I go in an elevator, the iPhone XS Max takes a much much longer time to regain coverage compared to the iPhone X and iPhone 6 Plus.

Not even close. There is a small number of people here who like to say the design is faulty because they can’t get a resolution with it. Most people are just enjoying their phones

I will try to replace mine then, it's been pretty frustrating, never had issues like this with an iPhone and i've owned all generations

I don’t think replacing it would solve it for you. It just seems that throughout the topic, those who changed theirs haven’t noticed any difference.

The issue is probably a mix of antenna setup with having a bad carrier coverage in area that is mainly based on a low frequency band (700 MHz for example).

Also probably software because even though my XS Max is showing same coverage as my Intel X and Qualcomm 6 Plus it takes more time to regain coverage when exiting elevators.

I spent a week in a hotel room that only got 1-2 bars LTE on band 12, and it was totally fine. Faster than the hotel’s WiFi.

It would switch to “4G” in the elevator and immediately switch back to LTE when the doors opened.

Yea mine has absolutely no issue returning to LTE if it dropped to 3G due to bad coverage. It does it as fast as other phones. It’s only when it completely loses coverage that is when it takes time to get back on the network.

In some of the AT&T threads here and in other venue, people have said that it seems to them that they appear to have better reception when they have switched to an eSIM.

Has anybody noticed that?

I am on T-Mobile, and I do not believe that I see any increase in RF signal capture, either indicated or real, after switching to eSIM.

I also notice the same old problem of switching back and forth between a two bar Band 2 signal and a four bar Band 12 signal, but that's just never going to stop. :)

I posted previously in this thread but here's a more recent update.

I upgraded from the 7 + to the XS Max and for me personally, can say that my phone is performing better and in WAY more places than any of my previous IPhone's (4, 4s, 5s, 6, 7+)

I'm on the Sprint Network and again, the XS Max is working in many areas that my previous Iphones had zero coverage and usability.

I would say that maybe I got lucky but my wife upgraded a day after I did from her 7+ to the XS Max and she too is experiencing a significantly better signal and usability in way more areas as well.

It’s hits hard to tell for me. Most of the time reception is great. But then I will run into issues where I can make and receive calls with 3-4 bars but no internet. I run a speed test and the test can’t even start.

I saw this, too. Like, the thing was dead from a network standpoint. My wife would get 60 down sitting right next to me on the same network. I would be getting .5 down.

Apple was completely useless on that, too. I went through every troubleshooting step and my issue was never resolved.

I’m in a dead zone, have a network extender. Now WiFi calling supersedes the network extender.

Speedtest from lte was always dismal. Just tried and got 74/6. Don’t know if it’s the max or just my lucky day.

With the initial 12.0 release we experienced this frequently on Verizon. 12.1.1 resolved the no data issue when returning to good reception without a restart. I mentioned this a few post back, but Verizon tier 2 support told me the issue was the device was losing the APN. This is why calls work, but data does not. If you notice the calls will not be VoLTE. They stopped troubleshooting because my iPhone XS Max is the SIM free version, not Verizon.

So I did testing in the 1-2 bar locations where Verizon would not have data, and compared with AT&T eSIM line I activated. AT&T has fewer bars in most locations than Verizon. However, AT&T data works whereas Verizon does not. The switch to Verizon with the iPhone XS Max upgrade was the connectivity problem for me. The iPhone XS Max seems comparable to the iPhone X on AT&T.

We are on AT&T. I don’t know what the issue is. I’m on 12.1.1 too for now. But now today there has been no issues so far.

Left house today got off of WiFi and changed over to lte. I was able to receive text and phone calls but could not load a webpage, news app, and Speedtest. I had to put airplane mode on for 5 sec and turn off then back to normal. Very strange.

So sad that these connectivity issues haven’t been totally resolved for all yet.

I was on this thread initially with a launch day Max that was returned and 5 weeks later when the second Max was no better for me. My phones both had bad connectivity all the way around - phone, data, WiFi and Bluetooth. Like others the download speeds came in at like .14 or wouldn’t run at all. WiFi range was awful - would cut out as soon as I walked out of the house. And with Bluetooth, sometimes it would automatically reconnect and other times I would have to go through the whole pairing process again. This happened with both my car and earbuds.

After returning the 2nd Max I bought a new X at Best Buy. What a difference - like night and day. The X just works the way it should.

I truly feel for those of you still having problems. I was hoping the updates would fix this once and for all.

Actually not strange at all. Many others on this thread have experienced the same.

I’ve been an iPhone owner for the last several years/models. After paying what I (all of us) did for this thing, and the experience and lack of proper response from Apple, I’m honestly considering going Android next year. This has been a really bad experience from purchase to use to support.

For what it is worth..... I was seating today during my lunch in LTE challenging area. I have iPhone XS (44 week of production) and I also had with me my iPhone 6s.
The XS was slow as hell with only 2 bars of LTE.
Well, I decided to switch the SIM from XS to 6s and do some comparison test connecting to the same exact servers on Speedtest app.

I did test from the same spot in my car. The slow one is from iPhone 6s. The faster one is from iPhone XS. I wish I had more time to pick another server but had to move.

I’m done searching for problem with my XS. I’m going to enjoy it more and more and read less into it.
