In poking around a while back, I stumbled upon these guys...

http://www.macs4u.com/mac-pro-2-93-ghz-12-core-westmere-desktop-w-amd-radeon-hd5870/

I had no idea they were out there. Kind of strange to buy 6+ yr old systems with config options and warranties? But I did find it odd that they had no GPU options.

And yet it's outrageous to spend that much for a somewhat outdated systems that's several years old. But the option is there, apparently with a warranty.
It's pre owned.

I love love love my black Mac Pro. Big success. Super power, dead silent, and portable.

Yep, apparently refurbing these old systems, while slapping on a few new components and a warranty is still a thing.

Funny, I remember adds for firms like this in the back of Mac magazines, in the early 90's. I just didn't know that they were still in business... ha!

It's pre owned.

it is designed to be that way. Most of the pro I know NEVER used any slot after have bought the computer.
How many of them put a BTO option in a slot when they bought the computer? Or a few extra disks?

For the non-tinkering pro (or business), the value of expandability is to get a system that will most likely last its three year lifespan without being touched.

It's a red herring to use anecdotal evidence that a relatively small percentage of systems are upgraded after installation to dismiss the value of being able to get the initial configuration right.

Apple doesn't even throw you a bone and add 128 GiB of RAM to the option list for BTO systems. Absurd.

But I did find it odd that they had no GPU options.

odd why?

the computer had two gpu options.. they're selling the higher end one in the linked configuration.

just in case you're not aware, when people say 'cmp has so many gpu options :( "... they're saying it's possible to hack a standard PC gpu and get it to work in a mac pro.

you're going to be hard pressed to find a company selling you a warrantied computer which contains hacked hardware.

This is a great point, it's not exactly like Apple welcomed off the shelf PC GPUs into the Mac Pro tower. Yeah they work but it's not like they're designed to.

Edit, I also must have missed the "shove a PSU into an optical bay drive area" BTO option.

The writing has been on the wall for years...

You make me LOL.

You're right, your but ifs are so scientific, as is your agenda.

P.S. Unless you think Apple only sold 200 and something Mac Pros then they don't post here.

Funny, I find you to be extremely comical and biased as well.

PS If you think that 200 votes in a mac pro forum are meaningless, your opinion might be even more so.

When there's an open port, or slot, there's a way. And yes, I get the officially-supported Mac cards, having had Mac pros for years.

Still, there's something odd about a $3,000 refurb workstation having a video card with 1GB of V-RAM. Then again, I guess GPU vendors aren't falling all over themselves to put out Mac versions of cards when their only target markets are Macs with cards that can't easily be changed or 4+ year old macs. So yeah, it makes sense.

DO you actually know the MP 6,1 sales are lower than MP 5,1 ?
Or are you judging the MP market using a little poll on a geek's forum ?
I don't know MP 6,1 numbers, and you neither ....
You think it's only "fashion", others may think differently.

I'm quite sure you aren't one ...
I'm not insulting anyone, and I can see a very few MP users here.

Moving the goalposts is a sign of a losing argument. Congratulations goal post mover!. I don't care if it sold more or less, the poll question is about if people think the nMP failed or not. Most respondents think it's a failure. Something you can try to rail against all you like, but there it is.

Really, you're quite sure are you? Well it's one in a long line of your being quite wrong. Here you go:

A few of my posts about getting a video wall and 6 screens going on my classic mac pro. Or, you caught me. I started posting in may of 2104 just for this very moment!

And As I've stated, I've gotten the trashcan mac as well and ended up passing it along as it didn't serve my needs.

I've never seen anyone troll their own thread as much as you do.

Good job though.

A bit of pot calling out the kettle there.

So you made a thread, as a poll but hope that some news outlet is going to pick up on it?

Pick up on what, exactly? Please enlighten me.

This: http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/the-new-mac-pro-is-a-failure which said this:
Think I'm overstating things? Check out this poll running in the Mac Rumors Mac Pro forum. As of this writing, 58 percent think the trashcan Mac Pro is a failure—which is astonishing in such a traditionally fanboy/pro-Apple forum.
and then was picked up by...

And This: http://macdailynews.com/2015/11/23/apples-new-mac-pro-is-a-joke-a-plain-and-simple-failure/

Well, I just checked Apple.com and the 2013 Mac Pro is still there so I guess it's not having the desired effect. Sorry.

Edit:
Maybe they saw through the click bait title.

When there's an open port, or slot, there's a way.
then that's good news for people wishing for a more customizable gpu environment in mp..
there are now two acceptable/capable ports/slots for gpu instead of the single one in cmp.

--------
edit- this will probably be misinterpreted as 'nmp comes with two gpu and cmp came with one' (or something)

i meant- there are now the gpu plugs and thunderbolt.. whereas before it was pcie slot only.

Oh wow, did you check it like you did that most people here are trolls and not pros and don't use mac pros anyway, because you know, you just know it. Using the force? Or maybe, being proven wrong just makes the bile come out. I hope the crow tastes great!

Whoever made this graphic made a lasting personal impression of the 6,1 in my head:

mac-pro-2013-vs-mac-pro-2012.jpg

The truth is, I think the majority here would have preferred something like one of these:

s2.jpg

I think ultimately we all knew they would shrink the tower, perhaps a smaller case. I don't think anyone expected what happened in 2013. I would still love to see some sales data though. I'm curious if it's as much a failure as perceived.

I'm proven wrong how?

You're the one begging for attention, then you point out the attention you've got and it's had no effect, so what were you saying?

aren't you supposed to be the spokesman of the movement?
what do you think is going to happen after a couple of news outlets pick up on your poll.. then a few more do.. then a national runs with it as well.. then apple finally takes notice of the 300 person poll that's running in a back alley of the interwebs?

they're going to read this thread and see you launching into the longest and possibly the most mean spirited tirade towards a single individual that i've ever seen in an online forum. (true story)
apple is not going to let you in the parking lot much less give two ships about this poll.

this poll is for us here at macrumors mp forum to battle over.. that's it.. it's going no further than that simply based on the behavior of participants.. do you think this is something we can agree on?

but let's just say apple does let you inside to hear your case.

you're going to present a list similar to mango's, right?

•one cpu instead of two
•no option for single gpu.. or 3 gpu..
•four ram slot only
•psu is half wattage of cmp

etc..

these are the gripes.. these are the reasons why nmp sux .. is that right?

because look.. those are not reasons to plea your case.. the only thing that says is "hey, i've compared the new model to the old model and i've made a list of things they don't have in common"

they may give you a gold star for effort but they are going to want reasons.

what software do you use?
can we see some examples of your work?
are you willing to come to cupertino for a week so we can record you during a project?
what can't you accomplish with the computer that you previously could?

these are the (types of) questions that should be answered.. these are the types of things which will strengthen your case.. not:

"Jony Jony.. i can't use nvidia in my nmp!!!" ..
-"yep.. i already know that.. thanks though... do you have a point or is that it?"

After which you scurried away from the topic and went on to your next hyperbole.

aren't you supposed to be the spokesman of the movement?

I mentioned earlier, not that you ever pay attention, that I don't think this has enough legs. That a few outlets picked it up, but it didn't reach "gate" status like some other issues did, where apple did respond to feedback. But at least I tried more than watching others do something and say "that will never work," which this forum has plenty of.

As for the mean spiritedness, you should look in the mirror and keep rambling your opinion to yourself over and over. I suspect thats the only way even you can swallow it.

fwiw, dude (blogger) is a member here.

hey man, the writing is on the wall. whether or not someone else may see things is entirely irrelevant after a certain point.
responsibility for our behaviors lies solely within our selfs.

if i recognize i have what could be seen as antisocial behavior then it's up to me alone to recognize and work on.. you telling me of my issues has no effect until i see it with my own eyes on my own time.

i mean, the last thing in the world you should say to some chick going ballistic on you is 'chill out'.. it's ineffective or even worsens the situation.

idk.. you can still battle and have fun etc while maintaining a certain level of civility.. that's what i've learned so far.
