Yes, now get over it.

Its apart of the branding, it was a conscious choice.

They didn't have to do a notch, they could have very easily done what everybody else did and just trim the bezel done to a thinner black strip.

I do wonder if it wouldn’t have divided opinion so much if they’d done that? The notch wouldn’t put me off getting an iPhone as iOS is far more important to me than the phones aesthetics but I do think it looks a bit crap. I would have rather a flat thin top bezel but it is what it is. I’m not the pretentious type that needs people to know what iPhone I have as I doubt those looking at me care any less.

Once this limitation is removed (perhaps all sensors and cameras can be imbedded behind the screen) why would Apple continue to implement it ?? as it would now serve no purpose. (making it stand out to impress people is not a valid response)

OK. Lets assume Apple achieves a miracle and shrinks the camera and sensors size down to 1 pixel each and the speaker down to several pixels in size. If you just put those dead pixels in the screen, there would be a lot of dead pixels where the notch now exists. There would be a large outcry from certain people that the design is hideous and that Steve would have never allowed it.

I doubt they will remove it for a few generations. Would only highlight what a bad design choice they made.

I was thinking more along the lines of electro-chromatic glass or a similar tech.

You would need glass that could perform two entirely different functions. Simply being able to make it translucent wouldn't do it. And then the production of sound is a real impossibility. Keep dreaming. No one is even close. A bezel or a notch are the choices and I vote for the notch. At least with the notch some of the dead space can be utilized for status.

I know it is not achievable at the moment, I am not even arguing that it is.

OK. We are in agreement then. There are only two choices. A bezel where all of the space around the speaker/sensors/camera are sacrificed and then losing a line in the display for status or the superior choice of the notch where the area around the speaker/sensors/camera is utilized for status.

It will take years before Apple backs down from the notch. People get used to it but never love it. Problem is once Apple does something they never reevaluate people’s reaction. A perfect example is the screen size people were screaming for years bigger, bigger, bigger. And it took Apple years until they went from 3.5 to 4 in has taken Apple years to give in to a plus size screen. The point is Apple doesn’t care what people want until it hurts their sales
As for the notch it’ll be there for years to come even though people would rather see an underscreen Touch ID or like Samsung’s S9 both options

I mentioned this a few posts back, with current tech yes you have 2 options, smalls bezels or a notch, I also mentioned when tech advances enough you will see both of these disappear and so with this in mind and in answer to the original question asked, no I do not think the notch is here to stay but it may be here for a while unless Apple does a 180 which I doubt.

We are not in agreement that the notch is the best of the 2 current options though, I prefer the small bezel designs but I of course understand that others have no issue with it which is fair enough.

I am highly biased against bezels because of the wasted space. If the X had bezels, I would still be using my 6S.

Precisely. Apple wants the X to look unique. Thus the notch. Not rocket science.

And since sales are breaking records at this lofty pricepoint methinks the notch is here to stay, might become a mainstay of all iPhones for the next 10+ years no different than BMW's twin kidney grill which set it apart in 1933 and hasn't left a single automobile produced by the brand since.

I dont see what the big deal is... Hopefully the notch gets thinner, but with ’s requirement that all iOS apps can run on an iPhone X starting in April is a sign that the notch is not going away anytime soon...

Imagine if all the high end TVs on the wall at Best Buy had a huge hideous notch.

See my point? They don’t.

That’s an interesting point. I also think if the notch was dropped all together in 2018, that would also show how quick in advancement the technology is if they were able to conceal the sensors/camera. As you said, I believe the notch will also be here to at least two more generations of iPhones.

And since sales are breaking records at this lofty pricepoint methinks the notch is here to stay,......

Here we go again, what records exactly have been broken as a result of the X?

The iPhone 6 is and probably will remain the best selling, and to quote Forbes:

‘The iPhone X, with all its new technology, new refreshed design, and huge levels of direct and indirect advertising did not lift up sales of the iPhone. In fact sales went down over the thirteen weeks of Q4 in 2017 compared to Q4 2016.’

I agree.

Personally I think it is very iconic, and I assume Apple also thinks like that (Or Ivy does at least), so I assume it is here to stay. As soon as you see the notch, you think iPhone. No other phone makes you do that so far. Remember that the iconic iPhone front stayed the same for 10 years, despite hardware changes.

Yeah, I know I am in the minority who actually like the notch, so no need to scold me. :p

Sales are measured in dollars, not units.

The argument about the notch being the distinguishable feature of the X is funny to me. In the very few times I’ve seen the X in the wild, I’ve recognized it by the placement and orientation of the back camera. It was how the owners were holding their phones up to unlock it using FaceID, so you can’t help but to notice the phone, kind of in the same manner that you notice a person is taking a selfie. But I get it. If someone has their phone laying down or you’re in close proximity to someone using their phone, the notch would identify the phone as an iPhone X.

As to the question, Apple just introduced the notch. It may get slimmer, but I doubt it will disappear until it’s time for a new redesign. Since it’s becoming the de facto distinguishing feature from other competitors, it may stay around for a long while, like the larger bezels before.
