If I didn't like the X I'd sell it in a split second, at a loss, and move on... I am not saying I like it because I have $$ sunk into it, I am saying I like it because I really do...

The S9 is a nice looking phone but I am glad Apple did not mimmic the design. I truly do not get all the notch garbage. Use it for a week and you forget it's even there. When you do want to notice it, it gives the device a unique look. All these new flagships look the same. A slab of glass on the front with small bezels on the top and bottom and a print reader on the back --> Meh!
To me a phone is a phone and a rectangular screen is standard because it’s been decided for some time now it’s the best way to show content. I know you can double tap the X screen to zoom out and allow the notch to not interfere with certain viewing but to me that’s a solution to a problem that wasn’t previously there.

I’ve said countless times though the notch wouldn’t put me off despite thinking it looks crap. The price puts me off more than anything and that’s the hurdle for me right now. This is why I’m more interested in other types of feature implementation, but that’s me.

Functionality plus design. Not just design.

Not really sure how you would like me to put it to be honest. What answer would you like to hear ??

I am not a fan of the notch in either looks or function so I prefer the way the screen is designed on the S9, I also prefer how content will be displayed on the S9.

Unless I'm misunderstanding you, you have it backwards. By default things aren't zoomed. You must double-tap to zoom in. Just like previous iPhones. By default, the notch isn't in the way of photos or videos. At least that's been my experience.

It’s the way you look at it. You can look at it as the notch covering the screen or rather than wasting space with pointless bezels use as much as possible.

It's really quite an odd argument.. A bezel would cover more of the screen.. It's a head scratcher but I guess it's just something to hate on...

Take the X exact same physical size and slap a bezel across the entire top portion and add a proportionately sized bezel on the bottom = BAM less screen....

In itself I don't particularly mind the notch, though I dislike that the UI has been fit around it in such a way as you lose battery %age without pulling down... a minor complaint, but something that grates. Perhaps it will be back with a bigger model? Having said that, I'm just not interested in a phone at this price point any more. I like to have plenty of space, so 128GB is the necessary minimum for me, and if the 256 X sells for £1,149, I dread to think what a they'd want for an 'XI+'. I'd rather get an upper midranger for ~£700, but upgrade every year to something fresh/ different than pay almost double for something to keep for two years.

Among Dieter Rams’ 10 guidelines for good design are these three:

Principle number 5: “Good design is unobtrusive.”

Principle number 6: “Good design is honest. ... It does not attempt to manipulate the consumer with promises that cannot be kept.“

Principle number 10: “Good design is as little design as possible.”

When shoehorning a a sensor cutout into a display, you need to do quite a lot of designing to mitigate the damage. That is a warning sign - not an achievement.

“Getting used to it” is - for some reason - *not* among Rams’ 10 principles for good design. I wonder why?

Now, in actual use the notch isn’t an insurmountable problem. But if Apple is going to retire Dieter Rams, can’t it just say it out loud? *That* is what bothers me about the notch.

Yep it's the way you look at it. I prefer the small bezels, you prefer a notch.

Wouldn’t that depend what the stated screen size is?

If a company advertises a 5.5” display for example, they don’t sell it at 5.2” and claim part of the screen is taken up by the bezel or another element. It’s the diagonal size and everything within that rectangular area. My iPhone 6S has a 4.7” display. The top and bottom bezel don’t even factor on that claim.

That's why I said same exact physical dimensions but with S9 type bezels... That would be less screen. Are we now changing the X dimensions to fit an argument?

I hadn’t realised 5.8” on the iPhone X was measured into the corners beyond the underneath of the notch. That to me suggests they are claiming the usable screen is bigger than it is.

The status bar wings either side of the camera is just bonus area as you’re not viewing content completely at 5.8” anyway? Or am I missing something?

I guess when the X is compared to a previous model like the 8,7 ,6 (standard size) you are getting a decent upgrade in screen real estate. To a lot of people that is all that matters as they would never consider anything with out an Apple badge (which is fair enough) however when put alongside another 5.8inch screen device from another manufacturer it doesn't make as much sense, at least that's how I look at it. If the images I posted are accurate I don't think the footprint size of the device really makes much of a difference.

Increasing the overall size of the phone matters to me. The X's overall physical size is about as big as I'd go so by adding bezels to the top and bottom your either decreasing the screen size or increasing it's physical size in order to keep the same dimensions.

In your diagram for 5"8" screens:

149.8 x 68.1 -v- 143.6 x 70.9

When holding in the hand, the width is the more important dimension. The S9 is narrower, making it easier to use. In portrait the side bezels are more intrusive.

Edit: width is also more critical when fitting into jacket pockets etc.

Nope.....

An old but funny image.. I think the S9 is goofily thin and tall...

Lets not turn this into an Apple V Samsung debate, I only posted the pics of the S9 as it's comparable in size to the X and has the same screen size but highlights the 2 different approaches to screen design.

But It's not comparable in size. The S9 is 6.3mm taller which is quite a bit when we are talking compact phones. Sure the X is 2.8mm wider but the shorter and wider dimensions of the X don't make it look goofily tall and thin.

Anywho, I am happy with the X size. Anything larger and I probably would have passed on it.

I didn't say exactly the same size, I said comparable. You are now just being awkward. As I mentioned quite a few times I am trying to debate like an adult, it cuts both ways.

As great as the S9 does look I don’t like the wasted bezel at the bottom. Using the x I’m used to nothing at the bottom and I’m surprised it’s still there on the S9

So you post an image of a phone that is not the same size as the X and then say someone is not having an adult debate when you are called out on it? Okie dokie, this is going nowhere fast.....

I didn't say it was the same size !!! It is the closest size device with a 5.8" screen.
