Wrong.

The notch tells the world I've got an iPhone X that cost $1,200 at an Apple Store and not a used iPhone 6 that cost $49 on Craigslist. Call me shallow, but that's a little important to me.

I don't wear cheap shirts, I don't wear cheap shoes, I don't wear cheap watches, I don't drive cheap cars, and I certainly don't use cheap phones.

You dig?

Wow. If there was ever a need for a thumbs down option on here...

Happy with my 6S here. Hate the notch, so the X isn’t for me.

I didn't say it was the same size !!! It is the closest size device with a 5.8" screen.

The Essential PH1 is much closer and even has a notch. The PH1 has a 5.7" screen is slightly shorter and slightly wider.

Anyways, the topic of the thread is, 'is the notch going to stay'.. Do you think Apple will scratch it and go the S9 route with bezels top and bottom?

I don't and I think the notch is here for a few years at least.. 2018's? Yup.. 2019's? Yup.. 2020? Probably.. 2021? Who knows, by then phone chips might be implanted in our brains...

I doubt they will change it, but you never know, they may do a complete 180 on the next batch of phones (I can hope).

I wonder if they did go the Samsung route , how many people would complain and say they want the notch back ??

To me it would not matter as long as they found a way to keep it the same size. I'd even concede a slightly smaller screen 5.6" maybe but that's not really doable if the keep the same size and add top and bottom bezels.

To be honest I thought with the move to smaller bezels we would see the foot print of devices get smaller , Outside of Apple bizarrely we have seen the trend for them to stay the same size but the screen to get bigger. I will admit I do think the X is the perfect size. Even if you had 2 very small bezels it would be a nice upgrade in terms of screen size over a standard 8. You could then have a plus model and everyone is happy (maybe lol). I would happily wait in line if Apple does this :)

The notch does not bother me at all and all the apps I use are optimized for it. I do think it gives the X a unique look but if they went the Samsung route that wouldn't bother me either as long as they kept the overall physical size of it the same. My only gripe if they did that would be that it would then become a run of the mill lookalike but I probably wouldn't hate on it either..

I'd rather have the notch but could be happy with the small top and bottom bezel route as well. I want a large screen in a compact phone. The X accomplishes that and in my opinion the X is very unique looking amongst all the slabs currently out there.

I think in a few years time there will be almost no difference between the phones in appearance and hardware unless we get all these funky bendable screens that keep getting promised, it will just be a choice between operating systems that will make a difference. When that happens the prices will drop massively and the companies will be relying more on services rather than hardware to make money. There is already a massive push towards this from the big players like Amazon, Google and Apple. We have seen some mention that Apple has seen massive profits recently and a lot of this is from paid services they offer i.e apple music, apps which they take a cut of etc.. etc.. those are the future big earners.

I can't say I love the notch. But I honestly would prefer it over a bezel. At least the space around the notch is useful. With a bezel, that information would need to be shoved back down into the usable area of my screen. So it's not the notch or the looks that I like. But I do like that the useless space up there was put to good use. So yeah, there's a chance I might complain.

For sure it isn’t a phone for everyone. As every piece of hardware from Apple. They are not intended to reach all users.

That was exactly the same talk in Mobile Conferences around the world in 2007. Everyone was launching excellent me-too phones. And a crazy man has standed holding an “Widescreen iPod” that also makes phone calls. And...

An excellent point, hopefully the bendy screen devices come about ;-) The fact we are discussing a notch as a major feature tells me phone design is becoming slightly stagnated.

just a question: do you guys then the notch will stay in the iPhone in the future or after iphone x they will find away to get rid of it?
Going to say no on this. Why remove something that generates so much discussion and interest? It would seem like a poor marketing decision to remove it. If anything, I suspect the notch will find its way into other products too this year.

As great as the S9 does look I don’t like the wasted bezel at the bottom. Using the x I’m used to nothing at the bottom and I’m surprised it’s still there on the S9
It’s interesting how tastes change for some of you. A few months ago it was perfectly acceptable for an iPhone to have 18mm top and bottom and 3mm down each side. Now a phone with a large screen and two skinny 6mm bezels is wasted space. I guess it depends what you are using and whether you think about it.

I think in 2017/2018 not sure it was acceptable. Just what’s we were used to

With how flagships are these days we expect minimal bezels.

Normal viewing of a video has black bars on the left and right. Double tapping the video expands it to fill the entire screen. At this point, I agree that the 'Notch' is an issue. But it is still not a cut out of the screen, but rather video wrapping around the 'Notch'. I can see this being less problematic once the X+ series is released as normal viewing of video will be as large as it is now on the plus size phones without the need to expand.

iPhone had the iconic app square in the home button. Instant recognition.

If you want to call it content wrapping around the bezel, that's fine, but your content is cut out. I'll call it a cut out of the screen.

I agree. Removing the notch under one year might also appear to others the Apple was insecure their decision with the Notch in existence to begin with. In terms of reality, it will at least be here for two more years in all likeliness.

Asside from a handful of notch hating and very vocal internet users, the notch is a non factor to most. If the notch was the major issue these handful of people make it out to be then sales would reflect this. Apple is selling X's at a steady pace and have been since it was released.

Most who own it are happy with it, most normal people buy the phone and happily use it without ever coming to an internet forum.

A handful of very vocal and very loud notch haters on the internet does not make it a failure, a design flaw or a flop. It just means 15-20 internet'ers hate it and are h##l bent on telling the world about it..

The notch is here to stay, it was a design choice that Apple made and those who don't like are going to have little to no choice going forward, Apple iPhone wise that is..

I do believe that the only ones complaining about the "notch" are in this thread. Nobody else even care about it! They truly wants less expensive silicone cases from Apple! lol

So we are back to any form of critique being "haters" then ?? I am sorry if me not liking a certain aspect of the X upsets you so much.

What would you call constantly banging the same drum over and over again? Have another word besides hate that would apply after reading the comments about the notch on these forums?

I couldn't care less if you like the X or not. Put it in your signature and move on with life. Some of us would like to discuss the X without every thread getting derailed ad-nauseum over it..

Yet again you refer to the trolls that spam threads about the X, that is not the case here but you use it as an example. As I mentioned several times, you are unable to differentiate between the 2.

Yawn..

Where did I specifically call you a hater. Please quote my post doing so, I'll wait - no rush... You are well aware of what I meant with the hater comment(s) as it's blatantly obvious when that is someone goal. It's also obvious when someone wishes to have a rational discussion about it.

I assume you are also well aware that every X thread there is get derailed with same worn out comments over and over again..

You haven't called me a hater, but the topic hasn't had any real hate for the last few pages but you go back to mentioning haters ? this tells me you view all people commenting here a hater in some regard, perhaps I have read that wrong then.

There are a few posters here discussing the notch among other things that are not the ones trolling the other threads, I am keeping my comments limited here so as not to be one of those users.
