Notch is no biggie

My car's been rocking one for almost 10 years!

I have no idea what car that is as you drive on the wrong side of the road :)

However the clue is in the words '10 years'

LOL. Why? Apple just overtook Samsung as the biggest supplier of smartphones in the world.

Those who are flipping are going from Android to Apple, trust me. I don’t know a single executive in my company or the companies we do business with who uses Android. It’s the phone you get rid of when you turn 25.

I could care less. This petty Apple vs. Samsung nonsense is beneath me. I'm an Apple man. I have an iPhone X. What the Ramen crowd does with it's cheap iPhone knock-offs means nothing to me.

Hey, I remember those years when I drove Honda's. But that was then and this is now, I wouldn't touch a Honda if it was the last Uber in town.

Now I’m convinced you are trolling everyone here. Took me far too long. Did some back reading and interweb digging. Truly legendary. Well done sir.

The notch is awful and the primary reason I didn't go with the X. It wastes screen space and looks dumb.

Put a fingerprint scanner on the back like other companies do and then you get a full screen display without that lame notch.

Essential did it better, theirs only has a tiny notch. You still get almost full use of that top area for viewing, notification bar, etc...

What they did works, but to me it looks ugly, and while they claim the screen is bigger than the 8+, when you remove the notch area and the portion that videos and most apps can't use, it isn't actually.

I noticed you chose to use an image of the PH1 that is deceiving..

Here is a better one.

That is someone running an app that extends up into that area that is normally reserved for the notification bar...

I have the phone here on my desk, I know what it does. :)

That said, at least they made an attempt to minimize it, while making an edge to edge display before the X did, and it still uses a more standard aspect ratio so you don't get cropping or letterbox wasted space when watching movies...

Doesn't waste any more space than a full bezel would.

Please no :)

They also don't have the sophisticated tech that is the true depth camera and FaceID.

FaceID is a solution to a problem that need not have existed. LOL

Put the existing fingerprint scanner on the back, extend the screen out to the edges without an ugly notch. Problem solved. haha
[doublepost=1519077681][/doublepost]As for true depth camera... you mean portrait mode on the front facing camera?

I don't know, maybe I am not vain enough to worry about perfect lighting effects when I take hundreds of pictures of MYSELF. ;-)

I had the PH1 as well.. No longer do but rocked it for a few months. I assume you are well aware that the notch is smaller on it because the only thing it houses is the front camera. The X's notch houses much, much more.

Anyways, Apple has made it mandatory that new Apps going into the App Store conform to the X so the never-notchers might get some relief from notch-gate sooner rather than later. Waiting on Android devs to adjust for the notch? Good luck with that...

Right, but Apple houses more because they decided to get rid of the fingerprint scanner rather than relocate it to the back as everyone else with a small bezel phone has done.

It's a polarizing aesthatic. I happen to not like it. I went with the 8+ mainly because of it, and I wanted the larger screen...

I never liked print readers on the back. I've had the PH1, the Pixel and the Pixel 2 and they all have it there. The Sony line puts the print reader on the side and I did dig it there.

faceID and gestures rock! After using the X for a few weeks I could not and would not go back to a home button having iPhone. I am glad Apple didn't put a reader on the back but maybe that's just me.

Doesn't work unless you are in the field of view of the camera, and as someone who constantly has a full face helmet on, it won't work for me.

Additionally, the usable part of the X screen, is smaller than the 8+. That was the deal killer for me. $200 more and it has a smaller screen...

Physically the X is much smaller than the Plus and it technically has a larger screen. I get it, you don't like the X and I assume this is based on actual usage over at least a 2 week period?

The part I take issue with is "technically has a larger screen". When it comes to using it, it doesn't. The screen is measured on a diagonal. I could make a screen very narrow, but stupid long and claim it is a 7" screen, but the reality is that to use it to watch a video, would suck. LOL

When you remove that notch area and the area next to it, the 0.2" they claim it is larger, vanishes. When you then watch a video and it either crops it, or adds that letterbox effect of dead space top and bottom, it gets smaller still.

I think that if they had the notch, I would be more willing to overlook it if the screen was wider and used a more standard 16:9 or 16:10 aspect ratio?

Well then there is this size comparison:

One is ginormous and the other is not...

18:5:9 is becoming the standard size. Apple wasn’t the first one to do that either. Blame Samsung and LG for doing it first. The X is the replacement for the non-plus variant no matter how much Apple tried to actually hide that fact.

Yeah, I don't like the skinny and tall Samsungs either... It's just such a weird shape.

I am 6'4" and 250lbs, the extra size of the Plus is not a hindrance for me, and I welcome the larger screen. To each their own.

I think that if the X had been larger, more like the size of the Plus but with an edge to edge display, it would have been a no brainer...

Yes, if the X was the size of the plus it would have been a no brainer, I would still be carrying my 6S.

It’s comkn but will like all OLed screens have a funky screen size. Eventually videos size will have to change.

Somewhere between the beginning of your solution and the clever finale, I somehow missed the middle part. So where exactly are you putting the proximity sensor, the ambient light sensor, the microphone, the speaker and the front-facing camera? I see that you proclaimed "problem solved", so clearly I missed the part where everything else goes.

I like watches too - but a phone is something which will eventually break and be of no use, watches can last for years.

Call me weird, but I simply like the notch and I like when it is lit in those apps which use it (even if it's simple white pixels on and not showing any info.

Watches = Was hoping to derail the thread and make people go away, but wasn't boring enough. Notch, no-notch, who really cares? Apple gave us some extra room at the top left and top right for indicators, and screwed up by allowing games and movies to bleed into the both and cut off screen area. I just deal with it.

I do wish they would give two levels of zoom on the video - so instead of a tiny letter box screen on ALL FOUR SIDES vs expanded and cropped and missing video under the notch, we could have maximum width without invading the notch and then maybe a small black border at the top and bottom in landscape.

Other companies have managed, so I assume Apple can as well.

I didn't know this forum had ads disguised as posts.

Let’s hope the notch gets kicked to the curb. It is fugly

Maybe in two years. Hardware changes don’t typically overhaul majorly on an annual basis. Especially given the notch houses all the sensors, microphone and the camera, that’s not something that would happen be eliminated all together without Apple making the accommodations with the display, refinements with tech being more streamlined in component Minimalization, ect.
