Always had this on my iPhone 12. Thought it was related to OLED, but I was apparently wrong because the iPad is not OLED.
I haven't noticed yet on my 14 Pro, but I think it does the same.
I had a iPhone 13 PM and have an iPhone 14 PM. Never had an issue with yellow smearing. Even my 2020 iPad pro doesn’t have this problem.

I asked someone on the AppleSeed beta forums who has an M1, also on 16.2, to read this thread and check to see if he is experiencing the issue. He’s in the late evening now with dark mode on as well as True Tone and night shift. He did not see the issue.

That person may just not see it or isn't bothered by it. That's why I was curious to know if anyone has seen it in person and has also found another one on 16.1 without the problems. It's hard to believe that this got through all the betas. I've been surprised about other visual defects that some can't see (e.g. TV judder), but this seemed more obvious to me.

With dark mode on, the text of my message list in Mail is white against the black background and I did just notice that scrolling through the messages caused that white text to darken a bit, when the scrolling stopped the white text went back to full brightness so even with night shift off it’s still noticeable when dark mode is active.

That's right... This bothered me just as much as the discoloration and can't be fixed with settings. All of my text reading on iPad is white text on black background: Kindle, Libby, Goodlinks, web sites with Noir, etc. On 15.7 there is no dimming or darkening when scrolling.

Just want to keep everyone updated on my M2 “Express Replacement” from Apple support. I called last Friday but replacement still has not shipped. Talked to support today and the only thing they said was “anytime now”.

Went to the apple store myself to check them out "Could only found the M2 12.9 not the 11inch" and yes the one i checked did have the same problem sadly. So its either that all ipads M2 are ****ed or a software problem, hopefully is a software problem and apple gives the attention it need to be fixed in a next update.

I don’t want to wait to see if Apple fixes this with a software update. So I ordered an M1 iPad instead and plan to return the M2. For my purposes, the slightly slower processor will make zero difference, and I get to save a little money too!

I believe this was occurring on my M1 12.9 as well. I was using that device on the betas so I was on 16.1 early and I think that’s when I first started to notice it. Mostly on the Macrumors site and then elsewhere. I’m not 100% certain about this but I’m fairly confident that if you enable dark mode on that M1 you’ll just be back where you are.

The one person on the AppleSeed beta forums I’ve communicated with about this who has an M1 mentioned that in certain circumstances he can see a slight dimming when scrolling on a site with white text on a black background but unless he looks for it he doesn’t notice.

It may be more of an issue with the M2s but more likely an iOS 16.1 problem which is when most of these posts began to appear.

I am hoping this is not the case, but I will have the opportunity to compare them side by side before I return the M2. Will report my observations once I receive the M1.

This issues are the same on the M1 with 16.1. The difference is that the M1 can run iPad OS 15.7 which does not have any of these scrolling problems.

On my M2, I have red smearing on white background. Not present on my 2018 12”.

Went to the local Apple Store… only one display model: I could not verify the color shift (possibly because of the bright store lighting). However, the dimming when scrolling (night shift / dark mode) was very noticeable.

Im surprised MacRumors has not made a post about this yet. It seems to be effecting multiple people and for a $1000+ device, this is unacceptable.

Hopefully people who are on the beta software and are seeing this have submitted reports. I did since 16.2 does not fix this. I couldn‘t find a specific area to submit the report for even though I do notice it more in Safari but also Mail, Apple News, etc. so I just made it a general report about scrolling in different apps.

I received my M1 iPad tonight so I had a chance to compare with the M2. Both iPads are updated to iPad OS 16.1, and are set up exactly the same (the M1 set up by direct transfer from the M2). Both are on full brightness, with True Tone turned on, Dark mode on, and Night Shift enabled. The M1 is on the left, the M2 on the right. There is clearly a difference between the two, with red shift while scrolling very evident on the M2, but not on the M1.

While I hope that the other posters are correct and this can be fixed in software by Apple, I would rather not find out the hard way that it can't be (e.g., maybe it is related to the pencil hover function and is hardware related? I have no idea). So the M2 iPad is going back to Apple, and I will stick with the M1.

So far there has yet to be produced an M2 that does not have the issue. I have a hard time to believe there is a LARGE amount of faulty displays as the current observations may lead to assume. Other than this occurrence with Night Shift and Dark Mode on, my display is pristine and I won't return it.

I agree. If it is only the M2s, and there have been others stating it’s not, it has to be software or they will have a massive recall campaign on their hands. It’s been long enough now that I can’t be certain but I believe I was seeing this on my previous M1, mostly on this site so I assumed it was due to some conflict with Macrumors and Safari. But then probably after getting the new ipad I realized I saw similar instances in other apps with dark mode on. Anyway hopefully enough are reporting that some software fix comes in the near future.

Just curious if anyone with this issue is on the current beta software. I’ve submitted a report by Feedback Assistant but of course it shows no other such reports.

This was my Feedback ID - FB11736979. But I wasn’t sure what category to file it under So I just used Something else not on this list.

Told the Apple Store employee about the issue and he had never heard of it.
That's called 'damage limitation'. Every company does it. He may or may not have previously heard about it, but every customer will be told they're the first to report it. It's such a common business practice it was probably first used by neanderthal farmers denying all knowledge of trading sterile woolly rhinos.
