Do you guys have OCD when it comes to having everything in one format (like iTunes) or do you not care if you have a mix and match of movies on iTunes, Google Play, and UV?

I am starting to realize that iTunes is very limited in its selection of codes. I try to keep my as many movies as possible on iTunes but don't mind branching out to Google Play if I have to. The one thing I can't do is mix and match movies in a series (like having 3 Fast and Furious movies on iTunes and the rest on UV, or Harry Potter).

I find Google Play is super cheap for a lot of series like Game of Thrones so it isn't inconvenient for me since I have a Chromecast.

I have finally gotten over trying to get everything in iTunes for the exact reason you say. There are just some movies that aren't available in iTunes. And if Vudu comes to the ATV4 - that would be awesome, although right now I can watch Vudu on my TiVo.

I just started this weekend getting some really good deals on UV movies that I added to my Vudu account. Got Twister for $3. The Lego Movie for $3.25.

Now I'm starting to look into the D2D stuff......you can get a LOT of movies for cheap that way.

I try to stick with just iTunes and anything UV. I'm not yet concerned with getting stuck in Amazon or Google right now. Most of what is offered for codes are available on Vudu.

YES, I do have OCD but I have to get over it :) Simply put, iTunes does not have nearly as much as VUDU when it comes to digital copies. So I buy UV or iTunes that is it. Hoping that ATV4 gets a VUDU app and then it really wont matter too much. I bought an app for the iPad where you can input your collection for viewing, so if we want to watch a movie we check out the app, see what we have and then go to the appropriate device.

I do have some OCD because I bought Iron Man 3 from a website as a DMA/DMR code and it turned out to be the DVD version. Granted DMA still gives me the HD version but it does bother me that on my DMR account, it now lists me owning the DVD version for My Collection.

What do you mean it shows you owning the DVD version? Where do you see that?

I think what that really means is that you got less points redeemed. Would have got more DMR points if it was bluray.

If I look in the My Collection tab on the DMA website, it lists me owning Iron Man 3 in DVD. I still own the digital version in HD since DMA converted it.

Now that you said that, I think I see what he is talking about. I have the same thing in my rewards account - Iron Man 3 DVD where I only got 100 points as opposed to the 150 with Blu-ray copies.

I think in the end it's where Disney is being generous in allowing all these movies to be redeemed in HD for digital use. Most other studios don't do that.

-Kevin

I'm iTunes all the way.

I think I'd rather just buy the film from iTunes with some discounted gift cards (when I get to that point) rather than buy a cheap VUDU code, purely because a) it's not a guarantee that VUDU are going to create an app for the ATV and b) even if you was to AirPlay stuff from the VUDU app, it's not going to be in HD, and that's not cool.

If they do an ATV app, I'm guessing it will be HD. They only restrict to non HD on mobile devices. Also there are just a bunch of movies that will never have iTunes codes because the studios won't do them. I think all Warner Bros and Sony are UV only.

-Kevin

I'm totally OCD about keeping it all in iTunes. I have to make it wife and mother in law friendly. lol. I do get bummed by the lack of some titles, that I really want. Like Fifth Element and The Professional was just re-released for UV. I might change my mind if VUDU is released for ATV4.

That's the thing though-it's an if isn't it?

Ive got a few films that I've redeemed through Flixster and on my VUDU app on my iPad they are in SD. All my films/TV's shows in Videos are in glorious HD.

They might not have codes but they are available on the iTunes store though-I'd personally rather buy them than have an inferior viewing experience.

Hoping more like it! ;)

I do have Vudu on my TiVo, so that's nice for full HDX. I figure I'll use that for now. If it ever comes to it, you can get a Roku for pretty cheap. The Roku 2 has everything I would need for $70 retail.

I really don't see any reason for Vudu not to have an app. Amazon for that matter. They don't need purchased capabilities for them.....just viewing.

And that's probably the exact reason why they probably won't have apps on there - they want you to purchase through their own platforms.

Anyone have thoughts on D2D vs. buying digital codes?

I realize that right now with no UV client for Apple TV, D2D is limited to other devices or mobile.

D2D can get you a LOT of movies into your UV account for very little money compared to digital codes. I guess there are arguments to both sides as far as if either is right to do? Some argue that with D2D, at least the studio is getting some money, whereas with digital codes they aren't.

What really bums me out is back in 2012, I bought Batman Begins and The Dark Knight for $9.99 each when they were on sale. Now I see The Dark Knight Rises UV selling for $2 on all the forums. So now I'm tasked with either buying the final movie on iTunes for $15, splitting the trilogy across iTunes and UV, or buying all 3 on UV (hopefully at $2-3 a piece).

That is one thing I try to do.....keep series all together if possible.

So THAT is the reason why Vudu movies look like crap on my iPad. I was comparing my Marvel movies on Vudu vs iOS and noticed the resolution was horrible. I figured it was a buffering issue.

An HD download on an iPad is the full 1080p which will take up about 4-5GB. A download from Vudu takes up about 1GB (which is the same as SD iTunes).

A Vudu download on a computer will be HD....athough it's in a crappy flash format. But for traveling it works fine.

I did get a bunch of D2D movies today to try it out. With the Vudu charge and the fee to the D2D guy, it works out to $1.25 a movie.

Aren't there any UV apps that will play in HD like Flixster or CinemaNow? 5 out of the 6 major film studios all support UV (with the exception of Disney) so just by going with those odds, it'll be tough going all iTunes.

I've already determined that any and all DC comics movies will never see the light of day as iTunes codes.

I'll check Flixster to see what it downloads.....I'm betting it's SD though.

EDIT: so both Flixster and Cinemanow get awful reviews.

I am downloading Twister in Flixster now and it did give me a choice of SD or HD. SD would download 1.8GB - guessing that's probably 480p. HD is downloading 3.06GB, so definitely more than the Vudu app. When I stream it says it's in HD.....looks pretty good.

BTW, this is the Flixter Video app.

If you go into Vudu's settings, there are options for low or high quality downloads. So I guess if you buy a movie in HD, you can stream it from your PC in HD, or download it to a mobile device/tablet in HD, but you simply can't stream it with the Vudu app in HD..

Not what I saw last night. I have the option set to high quality and it still downloaded the SD file. I think people complain about this a lot online.

EDIT: yes, I have Vudu set to download quality high.

Here's what I see from my tests:

Flixster:
Downloaded in HD - file size about 3GB
Streams in HD - shows HD in the corner. When I download the SD version it was about 1.8GB. Shows SD in the corner when watching.

Note: my SD download did freeze once and I had to start over.

-----------------------------

Vudu:
Downloaded in SD - file size about 1GB
Streams unknown, guessing SD as well.

Comparing the two.....even the SD version in Flixster looks 10x better than the SD version in Vudu. And it's about 800MB more.

I just bought Man of Steel for $1.50 in UV. Do UV models NOT include extras? I got all four Mission Impossible movies a while ago (for free so I'm not complaining) but I noticed these do not include extras either. When I look up the movies in iTunes, they all come with extras.

I'm not really sure how it works. I've gotten both. If you do a search for say Avengers Age of Ultron: http://www.vudu.com/movies/#search/avengers age of ultron

You'll see a couple different listings. I have seen where sometimes you get the code for just the movie and sometimes for the movie and the bonus features.

I bought The Lego Movie and got the one with a bonus episode but not all the features. I don't think any service is as complete as iTunes with the extras....although you do have to stream iTunes to get the extras - no home sharing.

If you are looking to expand your Vudu library......look at the D2D.

How is everyone's restraint when it comes to $1 movies? I've seen Interstellar once in theaters, I'm a fairly big Christopher Nolan fan, and yet I don't think I would ever watch it again. But a big part of me wants it in my digital iTunes library like I have a baseball card collection, and mainly because you can get copies for just a dollar.

Do you guys go wild with cheap movies figuring it's only a buck or two? Because all those little purchases do add up in the end.
