Happy to report :

Going to Nytimes.com
Side by side in store with my mini 6 the problem is as good as fixed in portrait mode

Is it maybe marginally worse than mini5 in portrait dunno it looked really good next to my 6 though

So much so I’m going to test drive one and compare to both my 5 and 6 :D if I like what I’m seeing gonna trade in the 6

If not back it goes and the waiting continues for next model

Granted didn’t try against a dark background or anything more extensive but my 5 second findings were enough to give it a try
Just waiting for holiday return season on nov 3 for extended test drive myself.

Doesn't bother me, jelly roll was a sweet feature on the Mini 6. But the Mini 6 wasn't that good for a screen, lacked sharpness on text. As long as the mini 7 is improved from that, I think it's an upgrade.

Walmart has them right now and the holiday return period is already in place ... and goes through Jan 31

You can get nearly 2 months more extended test drive via Walmart
Wow that is very generous. I got my series x from them for 350 and can’t complain about walmart. But i have 12 mini iphone which apple gives 150 for so that kind of anchors me to trade in.

Thanks for the reminder and that's smart. I agree, best to wait for holiday return season to start. Get 2 months to test drive the Mini 7 vs 30 days.

Typing this on my Mini 7…scrolling this very forum as the test, it’s definitely better than on my Mini 6. Whether I’d consider it fixed for me, is impossible to know in this sense: I never noticed jelly scroll on my Mini 5, which I no longer have, and to me that’s the best control. Because I am now looking for scroll on the 7. Having seen it I can’t unsee.

I’m satisfied but the main reason I upgraded was that the battery on my 6 is very depleted since I got it at launch and use it daily, so the incremental cost of a trade in over battery replacement was worth it to me.

on second look, it seems like jelly scrolling is improved but definitely not fixed. Compared to 5 and 6.

Also at a glance, not liking the tint as much on this 7 as my 6 :/

and not a huge fan of this noticeable lighter space grey, they even made the touchID button not dark!

All the TouchID buttons are lighter. Same as the Mini 6 in all colors.

But I agree that I like the darker hues of the Mini 6 better than on the Mini 7's

Yeah, I guess it’s part of the rush to get the purchase in the first place by opening up their holiday return window before everybody else

Mines going back.

My panel is yellow, and colors are less vibrant.. and I doubt I'll notice any performance differences for what I use the mini for. I was really hoping even with same display specs on paper there would be a subtle improvement with panel contrast

interestingly its an FN serial# panel just like my mini6 that looks much crisper to my eyes with photos and even against backdrops of iOS menus.

My mini 5 still looks the best of the bunch, jelly scroll / motion stuffs aside.

I have a feeling we'll see a mini8 sooner than 3 years from now given the odd 'iPad mini (A17 Pro)' naming convention vs. 'iPad mini (7th gen)' but maybe thats their new thing moving forward for all product lines of iPad who knows

My new 7 shows battery capacity in settings. That’s a new addition which I like…I just checked my up to date 6 to confirm nope, no battery capacity.

Also to add to what I said above - I can definitely still see jelly scroll, as well as also still believing it’s better.

Thank you for this tidbit

When the Mini 6 first came out I remember taking my Mini 5 into Best Buy for direct comparisons and that was my takeaway at the time.

The Mini 5 screen just looked better to me and I also vastly preferred the traditional 4:3 aspect ratio, at least for my mix of usages I guess. I also seem to remember the home screen layout seeming to work better on the Mini 5. It sounds like they still didn't tweak that to better accommodate the Mini 6/7

Quick disclaimer: I noticed the jelly scrolling on my 6 if I went looking for it, but it never really bothered me.

My 6 has been traded in, so I just did a quick test between my Mini 7 and my 11-inch M1 iPad Air. It’s still there, but does seem better than it was on the 6. It doesn’t bother me and I’ll likely never notice unless I‘m looking for it. If it bothered you on the 6, probably wise to test it out before buying.

That’s the thing. It shouldn’t be there but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to work with either.

I was bothered with it when it came out bc the contrast was inferior and it had jelly but I could get on if everything else was the same. I also had a stinker display was a hard pill to swallow for even some sale price slightly discounted but still not far off from msrp.

Got another one as a hand me down a few months ago and it’s much better than my other 6 was from memory. The fact I paid nothing for it sweetens the deal but it’s a good display for it’s generation.

I like having usb c and the new form factor BUT I also like having the mini 5 for its retro form and headphone jack and to a degree lightning I suppose but I’m mostly assimilated to usb c for most of my things barring a few (13mini, mini 5, AirPods Max, AirPods Pro 2, Magic Mouse)

It’s also permanently staying on iOS 14.3 :D
