Ok here is a bit of news just got off the phone with a friend who works at a Apple store(manager) the Macbook airs will launch Friday But they are in short numbers.......he asked if i was going to get one...told him i ordered online...

I dont think they would be in short supply. It seems like the same speculation as with the iPhone.

Still, the nice thing about pre-order is that even if it doesn't come asap, you're guaranteed a unit, whereas a gambling on getting a unit at the store may prove to be a bad bet if this is going to be a popular item.

Yep and i don't feel like driving a hour and a half on a maybe....if its a day late i can deal with it

Just some more info -

I called back about the shipping for my 1.8/80. The guy said that only the 1.6 were shipping now. I asked what the difference was (as before) and he told me that custom units will always take 5 - 7 days more than the base model, pre order or not. When I asked about Apple Stores he said the same rule applied. Around the end of the week for the base model, but longer. Pre-ordering is "a good way to ensure that you get the exact item you want, in a timely fashion. Not a way to make sure you get the first one"

Looks like Feb 6 is around right on.

I'm sorry, man - that's frustrating! This has seemed like the longest "wait" period of any product I can remember.

At least with the iphone, we knew when it was going to be released and how to go about getting one...

And of course in light of war, famine and leaky toilets, this is not exactly a hardship. But still, I like accurate information when I'm spending this much money.
