5 PM Central.

The store had two 1.8 SSD Demo units only, no units for sale. The employee pulled me aside, and actually let me play with the unit- sweet!. It was zippy, and quiet. A real beauty, as others have said.

They do not know when sale units will be available, so you may or may not be disappointed if you go to the store in the AM.

Regarding my order (1.8/80, Ordered 1/15, 12:24 PM PST)

I ordered the 1.8/80gig too at 11:59am but it still hasn't shipped. I am not sure if it is because having iWork preinstalled is causing the delay...

Hey mazingerz, do you mind telling me what the estimated delivery date said on your shipment?

Feb 1st.

When I saw that it was in Oakland at 2am this morning, I had a suspicion that it might get to my house today instead of Tomorrow. My wife was going to wait for it to arrive on Feb 1st..but not today!

Thanks! I live in Santa barbara in CA and my MBA has left Alaska
around 1pm with an estimated deliver of feb 4th. Just trying to figure
out if tomorrow was a possibility.

They seemed hopeful, my findings:
NC Update

1) Crabtree Raleigh has both SSD & hd units for demo and is hoping for a shipment of sale units tomorrow a.m.

2) Southpoint Durham has none and clueless as can be - "check on line" duhhh

3) SouthPark Charlotte is expecting some hopefully tomorrow - "at least" demo's

Thanks for the information. I was going to hit Southpoint (but I hate them) cuz I thought they would more likely have some but I think I'll go to Crabtree instead. I need to see one in action before I make up my mind.

One question. How much hard drive space would Leopard and MS Office take? I want the SSD but I'm just concerned it won't be that much left over (especially since 64GB doesn't mean you get 64GB of actual storage.)

Crabtree WILL have units for public demo tomorrow at 10 - and hopefully one or two for sale. They were playing with them tonight and said the SSD's are "plain sick!!" I've been putting my MB on a diet and I'm down to 54G with Leopard, Office, 14G of iTunes, iWork, 4.8G of photos and 6G of work documents so I think you'll have plenty of room for the SSD. Just trash Garageband, IDvd, languages and other bloatware. Maybe I'll see you there... Southpoint employees are getting to be real jerks.

While I'm waiting for my MBA 1.8 SSD which has been prepared to ship since this afternoon, I stopped by the local Apple store and they had 2 or 3 MBA in the back and are putting them out tonight. I think they will have some for sale for this weekend. I guess mine will arrive Monday or Tuesday.

Cool. I'm thinking I can get by on SSD if you've got all that. This wouldn't be my main machine so I can definitely keep it to a minimum. Man, I'm starting to get excited like I did with the iPhone. :D

Ordered at 7:30 pm on 1/15
Standard config 1.6/80gb
it has reached anchorage (or departed anchorage?)
It still says delivery on the 4th but i'm getting a bit excited that it might arrive tomorrow!!
Wont get my hopes again but the thought is enticing!
What do you guys thinK?
Here's my delivery status

Jan 31, 2008 1:17 PM

Departed FedEx location

ANCHORAGE, AK

Mine left at 1:16pm! Since Anchorage is 4 hours back (I'm slightly ashamed that I had to look this up) and flight time is ~7 hours, I'm also wondering if it might end up on a truck in NYC tomorrow although it also still says delivery by 10:30am Feb 4. Has to arrive here tonight though surely? Look out for the headline tomorrow "Deranged Man Arrested Trying to Board FedEx Plane at New York Airport."

Anyone have any idea what the status of the MBA is at the Chicago area stores? I just got in and it's too late to call them now.

Called the Michigan Ave. store this morning and they told me (in a very snippy tone, I must say) that they know nothing. I'll be on the Mag Mile at some point tomorrow, so I'll stop in to check.

Damn, good point. If it arrives on Monday I won't see it 'til Thurs due to travel. I feel like Homer Simpson in the episode where he realizes that he's missing the Chili cook-off...

Absolutely classic episode! Im in the same boat.. I leave Sat afternoon and need a laptop for my conference. I think I might have to go hunt one down in a store if this dont clear customs relatively quickly tonight.

I'm on the exact same plane as you guys. Because it doesn't say international shipment release, I have a feeling its gonna get stuck at either of the two FedEx hubs. Damn, its gonna be a long weekend.

But, mine says "departed fedex location." Doesn't that mean it's already left AK?

A went with a friend to buy a new Mac Pro desktop today. Since the Santa Monica store is in an outdoor mall, the procedure with big items is to drive around to the back alley, knock on the door, show receipt and they give you the machine. So it was right around 4:00pm when we pulled up to the rear door of the Apple store and saw... A FedEx truck being unloaded! I don't have X-Ray vision, but it looked like pallets of Macbook Air shipping containers all shrinkwrapped together. After we got our computer loaded into the car, I asked one of the store employees who was there if any of them might have the SSD. He smiled wryly and said "That would be nice!"

So if you're in the LA area, I bet that a personal shopping appointment for tomorrow at the 3rd St. store in Santa Monica would be a good way to get a machine!
SM store is always fairly secretive. I'll betcha that tomorrow they'll have redecorated the store, and the employees will all have new tee shirts, all for the unveiling of the Air. It'll be on full display with fanfare.

My recommendation, get there before the doors open if you want one from the Santa Monica store. Once they open those doors the store is going to be swamped--not only by us Apple folk, but by curious pedestrians attracted by the window displays and stepping in to check it out.

WARNING: EXTREMELY GEEKY VIDEO

A lot of you have asked for an unboxing video, so I made one. I'm totally never telling my girlfriend that I made this...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUaI2_zkfKA

Hope this provides vicarious joy for some of you out there...

Edit: Moved to YouTube at the request of people here.
Damn! It's like a strip-tease! You got me all excited; by the end I was shouting, "plug it in! Plug it in!"

And hey, I would have put some money in your jeans if I'd been able to reach through the screen

Just one thing: get yourself a nice box-cutter or something. I was really worried that you were going to cut yourself with those scissors and bleed all over the box :p

I just got a shipment notice for my MacBook Air -- 1.8/80.

The email says I should be getting it by Feb. 6th. Fedex isn't showing anything other than "Package data transmitted to FedEx."
